er, yeah?
are the movies more profitable in Japan than the original OVA? I'd jump through some hoops for that, but the movies? do.not.want. YMMV of course, but it seems like you'd want the source out there at it's bestest, or are the OVA's out on Blu- and I missed it? On the other hand this may just make the older stuff look even worse. I doubt if they would ever go back and clean anything up, there are places where the cels look pretty dusty in my geneon version...

Not my cup of tea, but hopefully this sets a precedent for japanese distributors to include (at least) english subs. Faster releases, better quality, and sidesteps the whole licensing debacle entirely.

I'm sure the English-speaking world will look forward to paying $250 to $400 for a one cour show. Or were you referring to strictly blu-ray? In this case, both the English dub and the subtitles already exist, so it doesn't cost Geneon anything to include them. I do wish more blu-rays for older shows would include them, but I can understand why it isn't high priority. Since, let's be honest, they won't exactly be in high demand in Japan. On the other hand, adding subtitles to the first Japanese release is not likely since it won't add more sales than it costs to produce.

This was what Bandai Visual USA was trying to accomplish. Be careful what you wish for.

Personally, I am ecstatic about the news. If I had the money, I would definitely buy them...sadly it looks like I will have to stick with the R1 releases for the time being. I loved all 3 Tenchi movies, and pretty much all of the Tenchi franchise. It would be awesome if they released the OVA series as well. I am somewhat surprised they picked the movies over the OVA release, but perhaps it is just a prelude.

They also need to realize how prices work in America, and then we're set.

I also love the Tenchi stuff, and this is great news to me. Hooray for America and Japan both being region A!

Excellent !! I'll surly get this one without the need to wait for a US release (if any). I hope that more JP releases will include English sub (and dub if available) in the future....this way i'll be more than glad to pay them what they ask for.

That would encourage reverse importing, and I don't think that's what the Japanese company would want. People are just too used to paying for cheap instead of high.

I'm sure there's some royalties to be paid out, but it's negligible, I'm sure.

I'm used to buying both high and low, but I definitely prefer the latter

My understanding is that, generally, any English dub or translation that is produced is generally owned by the Japanese (i.e, Geneon USA did not likely own the dub for the Tenchi movies). Thus, I wouldn't expect there to be royalties.

There are no royalties for this. Geneon used to be Pioneer. Pioneer's American studio dubbed and subtitled Tenchi for the North American market, so Geneon already owns the dubbed and subtitled versions.

Including them on the Blu-ray actually makes sense. They could produce a single Blu-ray with a reversable sleeve, one side in English, one side in Japanese, and make a single disc to ship to both markets. It'd save a lot of cash on multiple printings of materials for the disc.

They could make it all in Japan, and just ship the discs to other regions, if they wanted to.

Tenchi didn't exist in the 80's.

My point was that for shows like, say, SPT Layzner or Panzer World Galient, that are never going to be licensed, including subs on the R2-DVD/BD-RA release would mean english speaking fans at least would have a reason to buy the Japanese release (the 'target audience' for older and/or less popular shows are likely to have the capital to purchase the releases at Japanese RRP). Even for newer shows, a localised BD release is almost unheard of for all but the most popular of movies or short-run OVAs, so purchasing the Japanese BDs is better than nothing.
