Guy produced some of the greatest epic mangas ever:
Ghost in the Shell
Appleseed
Orion
And Dominion and Black Magic (to a lesser extent).
Then he starts producing these stupid ass art books. Then pumps out some horrible Ghost in the Shell comics, just pure garbage. Then the Ghost in the Shell 2 movie, which was trash.
Now just garbage after garbage.
Why can't he go back and make another epic manga? What is wrong with the dude?
Makes me want to cry:

I like to think that, like Katsuhiro Otomo, he simply realised that drawing manga wasn't where his true passion lies. Only instead of becoming a director, he decided to devote his life to drawing copious amount of well oiled T&A
The same thing happened to Johji Manabe.
BTW, Ghost in the Shell 2 was Oshii's baby, I don't think Shirow had much to do with it.

The only other manga epics that really blew me away were:
Battle Angel
Akira
Nausicaa
I can't stand reading those stupid little manga-mini novels. I want full trade paperbacks. That's why I like American comics, because you can get almost anything in a trade. And get it full sized, not a mini-book.
But Nausicaa and Battle Angel were so good that I suffered through the tiny books.
Are there any other good manga trades? Full size?

@ Slappydappy,
The short answer is no. In fact no one in the US has published manga in comic book sized trades for maybe 8 to 10 years, where have you been?
As to Shirow, he became well to do enough to do what he wants, unfortunately that isn't manga. Again, it has been that way for a long time now.

Masamune Shirow was one of the greats, one of the household names of the 90's when it came to manga and character designs along with:
Kenichi Sonoda
Akemi Takada
Haruhiko Mikimoto
Rumiko Takahashi
Yuzo Takada and
Masakazu Katsura
I often wonder and get all nostalgic when I think about Kenichi Sonoda, my favorite character designer of all time, also, why he doesn't enjoy the notoriety, appreciation and recognition today like he used to in the 90's. But it's simply because he's moved on or doesn't want to be involved in the industry anymore. The reality is few do it beyond their late 40's.
Plus anime is not defined or influenced by character designers the way it was in the 90's and earlier. I think a lot of that has to do with current animation technology, the internet, the way the industry has changed and how it's perceived and marketed. Not really sure I can place my finger on how those things made an impact, but they have.
Kenichi did release a new manga last year, but it never reached the enthusiastic support like you'd expect it to from such a well appreciated artist. Maybe it's the fans, his fans have moved on too. I wasn't excited about Bullet the Wizard, I had no desire to read it. It's 2012 people, not 1998. Please live in the current decade.

But the current decade sucks. Even anime has gotten more horrible. It's like all the meta-physics, dark trauma, complex characters and plots, and unique and creative violence/action has just gotten tossed out.
At least Gainax and Ghibli are still producing some new classics, like Gunbuster 2, Evangelion Rebuild, and Arietty. Redline was also pretty cool (not sure who made that). FLCL was such a masterpiece, granted it's old now.
I was flipping through an old copy of Appleseed, looking at the art, and then I was at Barnes and Noble the other day and flipped through some of the manga and I wanted to barf. All of it needs to be burned.
The art is so horrible. It's why I mostly stick to American comics, where there is actual production value.
Look how good this stuff looked back in the day, it's amazing:

Excuse me, but you apparently don't know the difference of requirements between monthly serialization and weekly serialization. Quick fix: read some shojo manga by Arina Tanemura.
BTW, Comic Gaia survived only three years (1990-1993), while Shonen Jump has been there for decades.

It lacks something.
It looks like a Michael Bay manga or something.
