The why is not relevant though. The discussion was instances of censorship happening due to criticism and public pressure from left-leaning groups and individuals. To change it to justify doing it is just moving the goalpost.
You've had to have seen this one at the very least since your name is listed under the Likes for it: https://twitter.com/SarahKTranslate/status/1353802862854197248 There's plenty of interviews out there from localizers talking about being uncomfortable with the material they're working on and their quest to change it for American audiences. Anime News Network has reposted some of these interviews in the past. animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2020-02-17/persona-5-royal-western-release-changes-gay-characters-depiction/.156546 NISA also holds live-streams on Twitch and candidly talk about the localization process for their games. For Trails of Cold Steel they admit to finding the sexist and misogynistic dialog and jokes in the game uncomfortable so they altered it for American audiences. |

You have a point, because a real name was used, based on a real person. But if the character had been an original/fictional character, there should not be any issue. The whole idea of censoring (covering up a character) in a sword and sorcery comic is laughable. That is one of the main selling points for Conan the Barbarian, Red Sonja, and all the Dejah Thoris comics. Really for most sword and sandal comics. Overreaction on Marvel's part, though most likely the uncensored original versions will probably become highly prized. Native American culture and mythology doesn't get a free pass, they are not more special than any other culture and mythology in the world. |
