I enjoy both subs and dubs, with a slight lean to the latter. The reason for that is because I don't always actively watch them and just have them on for back ground noise while I'm doing something else. In that regard dubs are better cause at least you can hear what's going on in the story with out watching the screen.
However, if it's a series I like due to story line, it wouldn't matter which way they are sold as. |

You could talk to Walmart employees forced to work thru their breaks.... Overall Unions are a good thing. A co-worker of my teen changed stores & something stupid came down & the manager tried to put the blame on the girl so she's gone to the union to cover her ass. Forget bargaining benefits-jumping in for disputes is the best thing a union is good for. Mine reeks, but it's there to argue for us if the boss messes up & tries to shuffle blame. Hollywood isn't really a good example (neither is the Teamsters)--it's more an unreal situation. As for the actors, really? You mean Voice Actors aren't any different from Rock Stars & their Roadies & Movie Stars? Or PEOPLE in general? I'm so disillusioned. I thought they were super-human saints who could walk on water & thus hike over to Japan for tips on their performances. No less a name than John Lennon claimed guys get into rock bands to get laid & anyone who says otherwise is lying. He stated there are girls who are so desperate to get a piece of stardom, they'll bed the guy who cleans up after the elephants at the circus (He might know someone, right?) As for the birthday party, yeah it sucks, but after listening to enough ADV commentaries where the actors spend as much or more time pitching their stage work (like those of us outside Texas care? Yeah, I'll jump in my Capsule Corp time machine & jump back a few months to when the commentary was made to see them play whoever in Austin or Houstin or wherever) to realize they are publicity machines. Actors are private contractors. Unlike most of the rest of us where we work for one employer until the boss or the employee decide otherwise, they contract for a job & when it's finished, they have to promote themselves for that next gig. Talent really has less to do with it than one would hope. Look at all the very talented actors who wound up in dead end (or just dead) careers over picking a dog movie or (like a lot of actresses) becoming too old for Hollywood to consider useful. |

Once people start to catch on to the fact that A = B, the actor has to move on to C. The penalty for working on non-union work can be expulsion from the union (SAG). If you get expelled from the SAG, you can't work on any union shows. Union shows are where the money's at. Hiding stuff from the Union is also why some dubs have the actors names, but not heir parts, in the credits. Resources like ANN's encyclopedia and IMDB can be a serious pain in the ass for actors who want to keep their pseudonyms secret. ANN's policy is that we won't out an actor ourselves, but if the information is already widely known, then we let it into the encyc. -t |

That's because the SAG is a bunch of control freaks.

If I understand correctly, Monster the anime isn't licensed because New Line Cinema is sitting on the rights to a movie that we may one day actually get to watch. (If this is erroneous, someone please correct, as I'm curious myself...) Loved the Answerman this week. I like dubs just as much as subs, so it was nice and enlightening. LOL Waiting for the day Zac sells all his antecdotes to a ghost writer who publishes the book with a tree kangaroo on the cover. |

Thanks for the informative responses.
this explains that burning multi-named question. This drives me to dislike unions more, no wonder Wal-Mart hates them so much, running the show for them. |

I'm a strong supporter of the concept and purpose of unions, and yet I hate what modern unions have become... and I'm socialist. I know many unionized workers who won't put in any extra effort because there's no point. Inside many unions, promotions and salary increases are based exclusively on seniority. At my first real job, I worked my ass off and managed to get a 33% raise in the first year, a 25% raise in the second year and another 25% raise in the third year, in three years I went from $27,000 to $57,000 without getting a promotion. There's no way in hell that would have happened in a unionized environment (the money made from that job was the seed capital to "start" ANN). My wife is unionized, and she complains that many of her co-workers are lazy, but because they get the job done (just barely) the company not only can't fire them, but has to give them a raise every year. And despite the fact that she works her ass off, she gets the same salary and the same raise. Sometimes she feels that the extra effort she puts in isn't worth it, since she gets nothing out of it. My mother was a manager at a large hospital, and she moved some biochemists from one office to another. The unionized labor was dragging their ass on moving the actual office furniture, and the biochemists couldn't work, so after 2 days they decided on their own to move their furniture to their new office at night. When they came back, the furniture had been moved back to the old office. No note, no explanation, but it was clear that was the union saying, "this is our job, we'll do it when we're good and ready, don't you try to take work away from us." And then there are all the people who take advantage of the union to be lazy, "Oh, I might be able to do that, but it's not in my job description, so you can forget it. Now go away so that I can play minesweeper till someone gives me work to do." BUT, without unions, predatory employers would take advantage of their employees and things would be real bad. I just wish a better balance could be found. When I'm president of the world, Unions will get a serious wake up call. -t |

Places where non-skilled labor make up the majority of the workforce are probably the places that need unions the most. Otherwise you get employers who say things like, "You will work 10 hour days, and no you can not use the phone during work hours to check on your kids at home, if you don't like it you're out of a job and we'll grab the next person off the street and pay them minimum wage. Or better yet, we'll grab an illegal alien and pay them a buck under minimum wage and you know they'll get the job done right, because if they don't, we'll report them to immigration. Now get off your lazy ass and move that 300 pound sofa, alone!" So I have no pity for Wal-Mart when it's employees want to unionize. -t |

Well you don't hang out here much if you haven't heard non-positive reactions to Vic. We have one regular poster here at ANN who seems to have a serious issue with him (this person hasn't posted to this thread yet, however) and I don't think Zac is all that impressed with Vic at times. I've also picked up rumblings over the year of posters online who aren't fans of Vic. I remember rolling my eyes over one particular LJ comment where someone was really upset when Vic wouldn't sign there yaoi fan art (I've never met that many male actors who would do that, let alone one who's known to be openly religious, but common sense and tact seem to be a thing of the past) . That said, you'd think Greg Ayres walked on water from the things I've heard about him . I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything really negative about him and one fan I know in real life would really love to see him again (she met him at a convention earlier this year). I've been in some form of fandom for over 20+ years and nothing in Zac's column this week surprised me on this subject. I've heard of and actually seen much worse happen over the years (though not in Anime fandom - I've not done enough Anime related conventions for that) and I've also seen similar and worse behavior out of fans toward the actors. If it can happen in every day life it can happen at a convention . Still, I did have to laugh, however, over "* [Y] interrupted another voice actor's focus panel, announcing to the room that [Y] was signing autographs at a table outside. The room cleared in the middle of the other VA's panel." Actors raiding other actors panels at conventions happens to be the norm in some fandoms I've been in years . 100% acceptable behavior by the actors, who like to do it back and forth to each other. While it's rude when you think about it I've found the actors don't generally get that bent out of shape over it. They usually just get back at the other actor later whether the fans hear about it or not . Anyway, it's best to keep in mind actors are humans, just like the fans, and they generally have failings. Also, there is usually more than two sides to any story, so just whose at fault for what can sometimes not be as clear as one might first think. Last but not least, I've found that actors who truly misbehave (particularly if they do it over and over) don't get asked back to conventions. Which tells me Vic Mignogna and Greg Ayres must be doing something right because they do seem to get invited to a lot of conventions . |

Yes! My feelings exactly! (Although I'm not a socialist. ) The unions were absolutely vital when they first appeared, and I'm sure in some sectors they continue to do more good than harm, but all the experiences you describe are the same ones I've experienced with unions. In some cases, they've become worse for their members than the companies they supposedly protect the people from. At least there are some laws that protect employees from their employers (with the obvious exception of unskilled laborers, as you point out), but I'm not sure if there is much to protect union employees from their unions... And I certainly didn't mean to derail the topic to this extent. Yay for Answerman! |

Both of my parents used to teach college and had to join a union. My mother is currently a social worker and is required to be part of a union. My parents both hate unions and would tell you that unions do more harm than good. I'm not part of a union and can't say one thing or another based on lack of personal experience, but my parents told me not to join a union unless you have too.

I've read somebody's account of dealing with him that while not super negative, was not 100% positive (and therefore sort of funny), but I won't repeat it here since it isn't my story to tell. But it's the only even slightly negative thing I've heard, so he must be generally a pretty cool dude. Sort of unrelated to Greg Ayres, but: Who's a cute tree kangaroo?!?!? You're a cute tree kangaroo!!!! AWWWW. |

Truer words were never spoken. People are people after all. Just a side comment just so you know. It's Houston. I'm not disagreeing or agreeing with you however, but I'm from Dallas so maybe my opinion is a little biased. |
