Real Bout High School has at least as good if not better chance of coming to fruition than EVA.

Rolling Eyes This I gotta hear.

(1) It can basically be pitched as a Buffy clone to all the studios, and most studios prefer tried and true formulae to experimental stuff like EVA

True. They do like formulaic stuff. But preferably, the formulaic stuff that sells. Buffy's ratings were never high enough to warrant the creation of some sort of niche Hollywood prototype for the development of future films. It was considered a very cult fanbase and not one that the Hollywood studio system particularly gives a damn about.

(2) One thing that is not said is what type of movie this would be; a Hollywood movie or a TV movie. Considering that MJH is well known but not exactly an A-list star, a TV movie might be more likely. But even if it is an actual big budget movie, the pricetag is going to be less than EVA; the special effects need to be nowhere near as sophisticated.

No. I still think EVA's got a better shot at seeing the big screen. Know why? Because it has the backing of ADV, which is a considerably stronger company than the one MJH owns, not to mention the fact that they have WETA Workshop -- the people responsible for the Lord of the Rings films -- backing them up with EVA designs and CGI.

Here's what will get EVA made: WETA works up a sequence from the proposed film, probably one of the big fights early on in the series -- Sachiel, for example -- and they do their magic on it. EVA-01 and Sachiel going at it, their huge bodies causing the very earth to shake under them -- debris from buildings being blown apart from various impacts everywhere. People huddled in bunkers, hearing all the noise, scared that their lives are going to end soon. Everything is on this kid, this timid looking boy inside this giant robot that looks like a demon from hell. The people in his command center are going ape-****, thinking it's all over -- when EVA-01 opens its mouth, roars, and goes ****ing berserk.

Now, imagine all that with the detail and skill that WETA showed in LOTR. Hollywood likes big movies. They like blockbusters. As long as they get to see a giant robot rip the hell out of something that looks pretty damn cool itself -- and that's a key word, COOL -- not to mention has 'merchandising' written ALL over it......they'll want it made.

What we're forgetting here is something very fundamental:

RBHS is one of the few properties Tokyopop has 100% rights to... Initial D, GTO, and Brigadoon being the others (Unless I'm missing something, which I probably am). Initial D was a big dub disappointment, and frankly, outside of a few others, TP has a very weak dub track to begin with. Unless they start going out to the independents that ADV hasn't totally signed yet, their anime isn't going to get off the ground.

Also, I don't know how popular RBHS was, but I got the anime and I really do regret that... now I can't even pawn it off for more than $12 for the entire series. The manga was only eh... but then again, I have no clue as to the popularity of it...

Case in point, we have a not-quite-outstanding property paired to a not-quite-outstanding studio. I wouldn't see it, and this still is no guarantee that the movie will see the light of day. I think that the money would be indeed be better put to use putting manga in more places, or bringing in more and rarer manga. I buy Tokyopop manga all the time because it's good. I wouldn't pay for it, but I guess enough people would to speculate on a movie.

However, I give props to RBHS for Magical Waitress Oyster Lulu and Azumi Kiribayashi. Both made it fun. Anime smile

Anyone remember about 8-10 years ago someone was pitching a Sailor Moon live action movie with Geena Davis as Queen Beryl? That one never got off the ground, so don't hold your breath on this one. Besides, MJH is too old to play juvenile roles any more.

I reference people to a spin-off of Wizard Magazine called Toons. I don't know if it's had more than one issue, but this was from winter of 1999. In it is a mock casting call for a SM live action movie (for season 1 at least). Hart was the lead, Kirsten Dunst was Sailor Venus, Jennifer Esposito was Queen Beryl, and Freddie Prinze Jr. was Tuxedo Kamen, among others. Just as an aside, a quip from the description of the article was as follows: "Just be glad we quite before we got to Uranus."

Well, the series came after the movie, and don't discount sci-fi otakus. They were able to get a Firefly movie.
