The year with my favorite anime of either the previous decade or the decade that I got into anime, justified by other good-to-great shows and movies that came out that year.
Obviously. |

It's really hard to beat the mid-aughts, especially 2006. It had this energy of being inspired by anime's past while also setting up so many ideas and tropes that would define anime for me.
Shows like Ouran High School Host Club, Kanon, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Code Geass, and Hellsing really came to define what made anime so unique to me in that era and other titles close to those years like Mushi-shi, Black Butler, Clannad, Gurren Lagann, K-On, and Soul Eater forming the basis of my anime tastes. My taste has broadened since then, but something about so many of the anime from that era just feels wild and unpredictable in a way that's hard to quantify. I still get that feeling with older and newer anime, but when I think back to the stuff I grew up with it seems like I could barely throw a stone without hitting an absolutely bonkers plotline that took me off guard. |

Despite writing 3 posts already, I forgot to say that I used to think 2017 was the best year ever. Why? It had several really great shows:
1. Girls Last Tour 2. Made in Abyss 3. Land of the Lustrous 4. Kobayashi's Dragon Maid 5. Little Witch Academia 6. March Comes in Like a Lion Season 2 7. Gabriel DropOut (of course!) 8. Saga of Tanya the Evil 9. Re:CREATORS 10. NEW GAME!! 11. Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju 12. Konosuba (its a classic now, despite being like, not really great ) So while 2004-2012 might have been the golden age of anime, since 2012 the best year is likely 2017. |

I'm also a fan of 2017. My top 10 would be:
1. Girls' Last Tour 2. Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju 3. Made in Abyss 4. Lu over the wall 5. Night is Short, Walk On Girl 6. Land of the Lustrous 7. Space Battleship Yamato 2022 8. Princess Principal 9. Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel I. presage flower 10. Napping Princess If Girls und Panzer das Finale ever finishes, it'll probably kick out Napping Princess. I rated the top 3 as masterpiece (which is unusual for me in one year), the two Masaaki Yuasa films as excellent (I highly recommend this Youtube video: The Year of Yuasa) and the rest as very good. My view of the Made in Abyss franchise is declining over time. I'm beginning to think it has an underlying nasty view of human nature. |

I kind of changed how I rate things mid-2015 so I only considered 2016 till 2023 for this, and I wanted to try and use averages. Using all-around averages provided by Anilist (every thing I watched and rated) it'd be 2023 with 25 finished and rated anime, but I feel like averaging out everything instead of the top isn't really how you'd think of a given year, so I had to go do manual averages
For my Top 10 of those years, it's actually 2016 with the better average, from In This Corner of the World at the top to Sweetness and Lightning at #10, including Concrete Revolutio, two planetarian entries, Durarara, Grimgar, Kizumonogatari, Mob Psycho 100 and Tamayura For a Top 5 and Top 3 however, I end up being basic like the rest of the thread and it's 2017, from Owarimonogatari at the top to Prisma Ilya Vow in the Snow at #5, including Just Because, Land of the Lustrous and Tsuredure Children But if I consider my ratings from before 2015 as well, then all the manual averages point to 2012, with Hyouka, Fate/Zero, Humanity Has Declined among others (Anilist's average would be 1997 with 2 anime rated that year). If I had the patience I might try to keep doing this for earlier years but going from an eyeball it doesn't seem like anything would surpass it |

I’ve seen post saying that the 2000s was the worst decade to be an anime fan in the United States and it might have something to do with 4kids. Remember people hated 4kids back in the 2000s because it was visibly antiquated even in its own era. So was 4kids the cause of why people said that the 2000s was the worst decade ever for the US anime industry?

@ mgree0032
I've merged your 2 topics as they're really the same thing. As an aside, the most common opinion expressed in this thread is the 2000s was the best decade, not the worst. But then, are you talking about the quality of anime (ie animation made in Japan)? Or the quality of the media by which it was available to consumers in the US (ie 4kids)? Oh, and I've updated the name of the thread. |

Macross DYRL & Locke have hilariously stilted English dubs made in Hong Kong & they are very funny to watch if you can find them. They were my first instance of buying anything with my own money |
