I agree with you because I thought that Blue Gender was pretty good. I only saw the first 6 episodes but I liked what I saw. As for a title I like that others hate, that'd have to be Ichigo 100%. I'm tired of people bashing it because the manga is superior. I could care less since I haven't read the manga (and scanlations have never interested me). It was an enjoyable series (although the special episode with spoiler[the killer-invader-alien-panties that try to take over the world] was really weird. ). I actually look forward to the upcoming Ichigo 100% OVA!! |

I beg to differ on that one. After seeing the fanservice of the first volume, I can't believe you would say that. Though that's not what made me put it into my Will Not Finish section for a while. |

Then I must have missed the pages with all the fanservice. Not that it would have made a difference to me. The anime was pretty dull and I wouldn't have paid money for it. I didn't expect the manga to be any better in that respect and it didn't look like it was. Fanservice tends to make me less likely to buy things anyway.

My choice would be my recent found gem Space Runaway Ideon. The TV show got pretty low viewers rating here, while there is no ratings on the movies at all, meaning barely anyone watched it. While its pretty old, this 1980-81 mecha show (especially the 2 movies) turn out to be the most impressive work of Director Tomino on my list, with concepts and story so different and new at its time. The more I look it up, the more impressive the info turned out. Not only was it a major influence of the Evangelion series, its music score was also done by the famed Koichi Sugiyama (Dragon Quest series). But this old show never got the recognition it deserves in the western anime scene, so people hardly ever heard of it or talk about it.
Even though it has been two and a half decades late, at least I managed to dig this gem up and enjoyed it thoroughly. |

Almost all of the reviews that I've seen have been amazing for this series! Where did they recently air it. The last time I saw this series was after I had bought my Super Beta (which also was one of the first stereo VCRs on the market) back in the 80s! I've considered buying the R2s of this series since they were released recently. |

I guess I based too much on the ratings I saw here on ANN, as I don't seem to see much review of this series else where. But I might have not searched hard enough. But I would seriously suggest the R2 2 DVD Movie set, while they are still available (some places sold out already, but Amazon Japan still have it). The TV while more detailed in length, seems to be less refined and very expensive. |

Like a lot of people I would have to say Ikki Tousen. Boy, I have discovered what fanservice means with this series, nonetheless, I enjoyed this series quite a lot simply because of the humour and sometimes even crisp irony, which I enjoyed very much.
Another one would be Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai (This ugly yet beautiful world). I know not many people enjoyed this anime but I would have to say that I liked very much the series. The message was gentle and inspiring (not that I looked for very profound philosophy in it), the idea interesting and the plot twist quite entertaining. Plus for the first time I didn't get irritated by the open ending. The third one would be The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumyia. I watched this anime simply because there was so much discussion about it: at that time I could meet only people that were saying about it that it is one of the most overrated series of anime which made me very curious. Nonetheless, for me it was one of the most interesting, fun to watch and beautiful story that I have seen in an anime. The artwork was very interesting, the ideas of how people can influence the reality around them and the people around them, how one must give a chance to imagination from time to time. Really inspiring and plain great. Not to mention the music. So as a matter a fact this series proved to be one of the most exhilarating and entertaining anime that I have watched. |

I don't know whom you had met saying it's the most overrated series (on other web fora perhaps?), but having 1034 masterpiece + 365 excellent + 155 very good votes vs. only 13 bad + 16 awful + 49 worst ever votes and currently ranks #5 at ANN (#2 highest) I'd say it hardly qualifies as "anime with bad reviews." |

Meloncholy of.... Overated A staff member not using the Discussion Thread sticky; I guess I am wasting my time. Kidding. Actually, most of the people in that thread talk about how good the series is, but it still hasn't been licensed yet. |

It hasn't been licensed yet because Kyoto Animation is sitting on the rights until they get the money they want. Melancholy is probably the biggest anime in quite some time (In Japan), although I don't know if that will transfer over into big sales on this side of the pacific. So more then likely ADV is waiting for the price to drop since they took such a beating on Azumanga Daioh which was suppose to be the series over here in the US. Delta |

I know that this anime is one of the most excellent series of anime and I liked it very much. I know how it was rated on the ANN, but the discussions that I heard were back when the first DVD was released.. I adore it, you as well and all the others who have rated it as being a masterpiece, but there are also persons that have rated it as being worst ever and back when the first DVD was released in Japan, it seemed like all I could here were people talking about it as something about which people made too much fuss about it. I think that the first DVD was released at the end of June and I had the possibility of getting one though I'm not living there. Back in those days I met some people that were talking about it and they were saying that it's not so great. It was on an other forum, yes, but all these reviews got me thinking. Fortunately I always try one thing, before talking about it and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya proved to be one of the greatest experiences that I had with anime. |

Not funny at all. I knew that thread and I've read through it. I found it VERY INSULTING when people accusing me what I have not done.
That's why I wrote my previous post.
I wouldn't call them "reviews," but rather "I couldn't understand it so it must be crap" rants. Reminds me an upperclassman whom I watched Bruce Willis' 12 Monkeys together with. He fell asleep while watching and asked "I just don't get it; why [Bruce Willis] keeps jumping through time?" after the movie. |

The joke was about people not using the thread in general, not at you as I would expect a staff member to be very aware of a popular thread like that. I saw I could exploit the situation to make a humorous comment about something that has been annoying me for awhile instead of sounding like I was just complaining. The comment about people loving the series even in a thread whose title says its overrated I thought would have made it clear that I was actually providing support for what you said. I'm sorry you felt insulted; it is probably my inability to be clear with my writing.

If you were a girl I'd kiss you for saying Fatal Fury. I have those on VHS and every so often still watch them. The fights and animation were awesome considering it's age. I was amazed that they also had plots. Each one was a little bit better then the last, the 2 ova's then the movie, and they all had good voice acting for their time. Everyone does bash Tekken but I found it alright. Not super but not that bad. The fighting game anime I found just dumb was Battle Arena Toshinden. Even worse was Samurai Showdown. |

Well, I had a reply but it appears it was deleted. I can't recall the exact content of it but my guess is I didn't clarify the reasons. Fair enough, so here's version 2.0.
My choice is Steamboy. While I wouldn't say that the reviews for this film were necessarily bad, they were mediocre at best and it just never seemed to get a very warm reception from most. I personally disagree with the gripes about the film though. First off, it's a gorgeous piece of animation, with very detailed and fluid animation and very good use of color. It never really appears as though they cut any corners and the level of detail on the machines is very impressive. Add to that a score that I feel is one of the best I've ever heard in an anime and from an A/V perspective it's quite the film. The main gripes tend to be with the story though, and the fact they lay on the action a bit thick. Yes, there's a lot of action but I felt the story was still progressing in the midst of it all and an event of the like portrayed in the film would have felt cheapened if the tense action wasn't maintained. It was a conflict of sorts, a clash of two heavily armed sides, that doesn't just stop now and then to let people have a conversation and I like that they didn't use that weak plot device and instead moved the story in the midst of the conflict. Matter of fact, it's one of my pet peeves in anime, or anything really, when a battle or conflict or war seems to conveniently stop or vanish for the sake of some dialogue or plot moment. It especially bothers me in anime where there's a fight going on and the two people spend most of the fight talking to each other instead of fighting. The characters were interesting and developed to a degree, not so much as you'd see in a series but they were developed as much as you'd expect in a movie. Besides, I really felt that this movie was their development, it was the start of something larger. I don't know, I just didn't understand the criticisms, I felt there was story and action working side by side very effectively but it seems I'm in the minority. I also loved the style, I love old steam based machinery and the complexity involved and to see it portrayed so thoroughly was a real treat. I loved the film and despite the reviews and general view of it I will continue to love it. |
