With 24 hours left and 17 votes in, here's how we stand:

D-10, D-13, and D-16 are all running neck-and-neck and seem likely to go down to the wire.

D-6 is still close enough to easily be in play.

D-1, D-3, D-5, and D-11 are likely decided but still within the realm of possibility for a comeback.

If you have yet to vote, these are the matches that you should concentrate your arguments on.

Group D-1
Ladd Russo, Baccano!
vs.
Marco Pagot/Porco Rosso, Porco Rosso

Porco Rosso

Sorry Generic #757858, but it is coming up to two-thirty in the morning and I really cannot be bothered to spit some bile, even at what I see is a seriously uncool character. Are they both badarses? Strength alone isn't enough, nor is being frightening. Badarse characters in a way get the audience to admire them, and I can't admire a guy who absolutely deserves to be for the rest of his days in a shallow grave or psychiatric hospital. I mean, he's a loon, a thug with plot-armour and the mind of a three-year-old.

Ladd and Claire were actually two reasons (of many) why I dislike Baccano!. I chose Ladd on my Minigame, but I'll be damned if I'm voting for him.

Group D-2
Arsene Lupin, Lupin III franchise
vs.
Mikura Suzuki, Mezzo DSA, Mezzo Forte

Lupin III

Group D-3
Hitagi Senjourgahara, Bakemonogatari
vs.
Jin, Samurai Champloo

Hitagi

She's the scariest - and possibly the best - Tsundere I've ever seen. Whenever she's on screen she dominates it. I enjoyed watching Jin, I like him a lot, but he isn't anywhere near as fearsomely cool and badarse as Hitagi is.

Group D-4
Spike Spiegel, Cowboy Bebop
vs.
Genkai, Yu Yu Hakusho

Spike

Never watched Genkai, unless Yu Yu Hakusho: The Abridged Series counts. But it doesn't matter. Spike is so cool he makes me think smoking is cool, and I hate smoking and have never puffed a cigarette in my life (and never will). Too cool.

Group D-5
Atsuko Chiba/Paprika, Paprika
vs.
Erin, Beast Player Erin

Erin

I just watched Paprika, and while the titular character was cute and bubbly, and was both competent and proficient in the dream world, she was more charm than cool. I've heard good things about Erin, so I'll go with her.

Group D-6
Duke Togo, Golgo 13
vs.
Taisou, Giant Robo

Duke Togo

Taisou's writeup doesn't seem very persuasive. And of course, Duke Togo is little else but cool.

Group D-7
Firo Prochainezo, Baccano!
vs.
Ichiro Miyata, Fighting Spirit

Firo

He was awesome. He never flaunted his strength if he could help it, but when he needed to his opponent was in big trouble.

Group D-8
Alucard, Hellsing franchise
vs.
Kyouya Ootari, Ouran High School Host Club

Alucard

Alucard - especially with Crispin Freeman voicing him - does little else but act cool and badarse. It's like he's contractually obligated to or something.

Group D-9
Yang Wen Li Legend of the Galactic Heroes
vs.
Alberto, Giant Robo

Yang

Group D-10
Saeko Busujima, High School of the Dead
vs.
Xellos, Slayers franchise

Saeko

I will link to that video again.

So there are probably other moments as well; I don't know, I haven't actually seen the show. But try and beat that scene Xellos. You can't, can you?

Group D-11
Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise
vs.
Kakashi Hatake, Naruto franchise

Mokoto

Group D-12
Scar, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
vs.
Dark Schneider, Bastard!!

Dark Schneider

Scar was good, so when the video clips come there had better be some strong evidence as to why Schneider is supposedly so good.

Group D-13
Shizuo Heiwajima, Durarara!!
vs.
Maximilien Jenius, Super Dimension Fortress Macross

Shizuo

Yeah, he was cool, I vouch for him.

IZAYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Group D-14
Honoka, The Third: The Girl With The Blue Eye
vs.
Lucy, Elfen Lied

Lucy

It isn't her powers that are so scary, but rather her warped personality. Just because her backstory is so forgiving of her does not lessen just how brutal she is.

Group D-15
Chouji Suitengu, Speed Grapher
vs.
Sebastien Michaelis, Black Butler

Suitengu

Speed Grapher is so underrated. And so is Suitengu.

Group D-16
Kamina, Gurren Lagann
vs.
Batou, Ghost in the Shell franchise

Batou

Batou is threatening to topple Kamina? I don't care if my Minigame suffers, sign me up dudes, sign me up.

Group D-1
Ladd Russo, Baccano!
vs.
Marco Pagot/Porco Rosso, Porco Rosso

Voting For: Porco Rosso

I like Baccano, but there is simply nothing cool about Ladd Russo! What is cool about being psychotic? I don't see how you can call him charismatic, there is one reason people have not ganged up on him and killed his stupid, blood-thirsty, and dangerous self. Because, aprt from being a psycho he is also spoiled rich boy protected by a powerful crime family whose father would be better off putting him down.
Porco on the other hand is the picture of cool- a literal pig-faced man who demands your respect anyway, through skill, his cool-headed nature in adversity, and a morality that protects others at personal risk.

Group D-2
Arsene Lupin, Lupin III franchise
vs.
Mikura Suzuki, Mezzo DSA, Mezzo Forte

Voting For: Arsene Lupin III
(shouldn't the "III" also be in his name in future rounds? He isn't his grandfather.)

Group D-16
Kamina, Gurren Lagann
vs.
Batou, Ghost in the Shell franchise

Kamina

I have to give Kamina the edge over Batou in this match. While both are well known characters from popular franchises, the roles each hold in their respective series make the biggest difference. Kamina is the driving force of Gurren Lagann in the earliest episodes. He uses his charisma and confidence to both inspire those around him and take action himself. His role as mentor to Simon also allowed him to utter some of the most memorable lines in recent anime history.

Against some other opponents in this tournament, Batou could easily move on to the next round. He is extremely skilled as a fighter and is very respected by those in Section 9. He is even given the task of future members of Section 9. He is given a more human side through his interactions with the Tachikomas and his non-work related conversations with Motoko. His connection to Motoko is his biggect weakness against Kamina in my opinion. While a strong character in his own rite Motoko outshines him in the series and by playing second fiddle to her he loses some of coolness. Based upon the OVA, spoiler[they don't even promote him to Motoko's position after she leaves Section 9; they use Togusa instead.] Unfortunately for Batou, Kamina follows no one but himself and his personal attitude reflects the entire atmosphere of Gurren Lagann.

*Point removed due to clarification from Generic #757858. Knew I should have refreshed my memory before posting Embarassed.

That was because spoiler[he refused the post though, not because of his lack of ability.]

But yeah, it's a shame Batou had to go against Kamina at such an early stage, I'd easily have picked him over most of the other candidates. Not that I'll be particularly sad if he manages to win, at least that would be make upcoming match ups more interesting, even if it screwed up my minigame.

Group D-1
Ladd Russo, Baccano!
vs.
Marco Pagot/Porco Rosso, Porco Rosso
My vote: Ladd Russo
Ladd is a guy who shouldn't be likable. Some would argue he isn't likable. He's a bad-ass, but he's insane and sadistic, a nutcase who loves killing. Bad-ass, but there's no way he could be "cool" in a more general sense, right?

Yet somehow, for reasons I can't describe, he's incredibly fun to watch. I find myself rooting for him even when going against someone who is seemingly less evil like Claire Stanford. He's cool even though he shouldn't be, and he gets my vote here.

Group D-2
Arsene Lupin, Lupin III franchise
vs.
Mikura Suzuki, Mezzo DSA, Mezzo Forte
My vote: Mikura Suzuki
I was all set to vote for Lupin based on simply reputation, but the bit I saw of him once didn't exactly impress me, and Key made a decent point in Mikura's favor. It looks like Lupin will dominate this match anyways.

Group D-3
Hitagi Senjourgahara, Bakemonogatari
vs.
Jin, Samurai Champloo
My vote: Jin
Going with the character I know here, though Hitagi sounds like a worthy contender herself.

Group D-4
Spike Spiegel, Cowboy Bebop
vs.
Genkai, Yu Yu Hakusho
My vote: Spike Spiegel
There's a reason why Spike is a big choice to win this whole tournament. He's awesome.

Group D-5
Atsuko Chiba/Paprika, Paprika
vs.
Erin, Beast Player Erin
My vote: Erin
Going for the character I know and love over a character that has had some good arguments in her faver but has also had a couple people specifically vote against her.

Group D-6
Duke Togo, Golgo 13
vs.
Taisou, Giant Robo
My vote: Taisou
Duke Togo's write-up just didn't impress me for whatever reason, so I'm voting for Taisou.

Group D-7
Firo Prochainezo, Baccano!
vs.
Ichiro Miyata, Fighting Spirit
My vote: Firo Prochainezo
Possibly the strongest of the Baccano! candidates in this tournament, I feel he definitely deserves to move on this round.

Group D-8
Alucard, Hellsing franchise
vs.
Kyouya Ootari, Ouran High School Host Club
My vote: Alucard
Alucard's reputation proceeds him.

Group D-9
Yang Wen Li Legend of the Galactic Heroes
vs.
Alberto, Giant Robo
My vote: Yang Wen Li
Alberto looks cooler, but the arguments for Yang have impressed me more.

Group D-10
Saeko Busujima, High School of the Dead
vs.
Xellos, Slayers franchise
My vote: Saeko Busujima
This vote presented something of a problem for me. I really like Xellos, and think he's a deserving candidate, but from what I've seen of her Saeko is a bit more deserving.

But 95% of what I've seen of Saeko is from the manga, so it doesn't count.

But based on the 2 episodes of the anime I've seen and some of the arguments in her favor, I'm fairly certain that the anime version of Saeko is herself a strong candidate, so she gets the vote.

Group D-11
Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise
vs.
Kakashi Hatake, Naruto franchise
My vote: Motoko Kusanagi
Poor Kakashi, getting stuck with Motoko in the first round. Both are bad-ass, both are cool, but I like Motoko a bit more.

Group D-12
Scar, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
vs.
Dark Schneider, Bastard!!
My vote: Dark Schneider
I was going to vote for Scar, despite Schneider's reputation, but some of the arguments for him made me reconsider. It's a tough choice, but I'm giving DS the slight edge here.

Group D-13
Shizuo Heiwajima, Durarara!!
vs.
Maximilien Jenius, Super Dimension Fortress Macross
My vote: Shizuo Heiwajima
When a headless, seemingly immortal fairy from celtic lore is impressed and at times even a little freaked out by you, despite you being a "normal" human, you know you're bad-ass. Shizuo all the way here.

Group D-14
Honoka, The Third: The Girl With The Blue Eye
vs.
Lucy, Elfen Lied
My vote: Honoka
No contest here. Even completely ignoring the Nyu aspect of her, I just don't find Lucy very bad-ass.

It's not as if she doesn't have the fighting skills to be bad-ass, but in my view, to cross the line from simply being really strong to being bad-ass, you need something more. A certain style or attitude or something. Lucy lacks that, at least in my opinion.

Group D-15
Chouji Suitengu, Speed Grapher
vs.
Sebastien Michaelis, Black Butler
My vote: Sebastien Michaelis
Basing this on guide entries/comments.

Group D-16
Kamina, Gurren Lagann
vs.
Batou, Ghost in the Shell franchise
My vote: Kamina
Poor Batou. Kamina is pretty much nothing but cool and bad-ass, in show full of over the top coolness and bad-assery.

Group D-1
Ladd Russo, Baccano!
vs.
Marco Pagot/Porco Rosso, Porco Rosso

Porco Rosso

I honestly don't see how the heck Ladd Russo could beat Porco Rosso. Russo is just not cool. He's badass, sure. But cool? How can this psychopath be cool? Sociopaths can be cool, but not psychopaths really. And come on, if Porco was a real guy, he'd be one of the coolest friends you could possibly have.

Group D-2
Arsene Lupin, Lupin III franchise
vs.
Mikura Suzuki, Mezzo DSA, Mezzo Forte

Lupin III

Group D-3
Hitagi Senjourgahara, Bakemonogatari
vs.
Jin, Samurai Champloo

Jin. I'm going to vote for Jin here, but it could go either way really.

Group D-4
Spike Spiegel, Cowboy Bebop
vs.
Genkai, Yu Yu Hakusho

Spike

Group D-5
Atsuko Chiba/Paprika, Paprika
vs.
Erin, Beast Player Erin

Erin

Group D-6
Duke Togo, Golgo 13
vs.
Taisou, Giant Robo

Duke Togo

Group D-7
Firo Prochainezo, Baccano!
vs.
Ichiro Miyata, Fighting Spirit

Miyata.

Hmm, kind of a toss up for me.

Group D-8
Alucard, Hellsing franchise
vs.
Kyouya Ootari, Ouran High School Host Club

Alucard

Group D-9
Yang Wen Li Legend of the Galactic Heroes
vs.
Alberto, Giant Robo

Yang

Group D-10
Saeko Busujima, High School of the Dead
vs.
Xellos, Slayers franchise

Saeko
. I don't really remember Xellos, so that counts against him. All the arguments tend to say he's a jerk. I think certain kinds of jerks can be cool, but not what has been described of him.

But it really wouldn't matter anyway. Saeko is both cool and composed and extremely badass anyway.

Group D-11
Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise
vs.
Kakashi Hatake, Naruto franchise

Mokoto

Group D-12
Scar, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
vs.
Dark Schneider, Bastard!!

Dark Schneider

I haven't seen Bastard!!, but from everything I've heard about him and the little I've seen from youtube, he was friggin amazing.

Group D-13
Shizuo Heiwajima, Durarara!!
vs.
Maximilien Jenius, Super Dimension Fortress Macross

Shizuo. I'm sorry, I'm not voting for a guy with the name Maximilen Jenius. Totally uncool name.

Group D-14
Honoka, The Third: The Girl With The Blue Eye
vs.
Lucy, Elfen Lied

Honoka. I think Lucy is really cool, but I'm having trouble separating her from Nyuu. Haven't seen the Third, but for now that will do.

Group D-15
Chouji Suitengu, Speed Grapher
vs.
Sebastien Michaelis, Black Butler

Suitengu

Voting for the underdog here, because he certainly deserves a few votes.

Group D-16
Kamina, Gurren Lagann
vs.
Batou, Ghost in the Shell franchise

Kamina. I still think Gurren Lagann is the most overrated thing on the planet, but I'll grant you that people's love for Kamina is not overrated.

Chouji Suitengu, Speed Grapher

Sebastien Michaelis, Black Butler

My votes goes to: Sebastien Michaelis.

Group D-16
Kamina, Gurren Lagann
vs.
Batou, Ghost in the Shell franchise

The words "impossible", "fear", and "hesitation" are not in Kamina's dictionary. Nor are "tactics" and "common sense." But it is this gun-ho attitude and charisma which draws people to him especially Simon.

One such example is when hijacks a Gunmen just because he wants one. But the Gunmen's system rejects him as the pilot. However, with the threat of death upon him, Kamina wills the Gunmen to accept him as the pilot. He then successfully fends off his assailants and thus begins the fight for freedom. With this momentous victory, the Gunmen is renamed "Gurren."

It is this over-the-top macho, fight or flight, depiction of masculinity and his trademark phrase, "Who the hell do you think I am?!" is seen as a symbol of confidence. This is actually contagious as other characters do this as a tribute to their leader.

My votes goes to: Kamina.

While it does lead to a few overly aggressive fights here and there...I still believe that one of the consistently interesting (and entertaining) consequences of these tournaments happens to be how the fact there is no such thing as an universal definition of "coolness" (or heroism, for that matter) is regularly confirmed. Granted, there are some general standards in the official guidelines but they're still very open to personal interpretation.

Enough of that though....here are the votes.

Group D-1
Ladd
Russo
, Baccano!
vs.
Marco
Pagot/Porco Rosso
, Porco Rosso

Voting for: Porco Rosso

I'm actually not too much of a Ladd fan myself (as opposed to, say, a fan of Claire), but nevertheless still found him to be a consistently entertaining character. Having said that, I'm voting for Porco Rosso mostly as a matter of principle and due to the fact a couple of relatively good arguments have been presented by previous posters.

Group D-2
Arsene
Lupin
, Lupin III franchise
vs.
Mikura
Suzuki
, Mezzo DSA, Mezzo Forte

Voting for: Arsene Lupin

What little I saw of Mikura didn't leave much of an impression on me, to be quite honest, so I'll gladly give Lupin the support that he rightfully deserves as a classic and effective character archetype. It's a good thing we're only talking about the anime version of the guy though, not the one from the original manga (which may or may not be just as cool on paper, depending on your perspective, but sure loses a lot of sympathy points in the process).

Group D-3
Hitagi
Senjourgahara
, Bakemonogatari
vs.
Jin,
Samurai Champloo

Voting for: Jin

Not my favorite character from the show, but I guess Jin's alright for this round. Admittedly, I'm not especially inclined to consistently vote for any of the two in the long run, or at least not at this point in time.

Group D-4
Spike
Spiegel
, Cowboy Bebop
vs.
Genkai,
Yu Yu Hakusho

Voting for: Spike Spiegel

I do feel a bit sorry for Genkai here, since it's pretty much a given that Spike is going to get very far in this tournament.

Group D-5
Atsuko
Chiba/Paprika
, Paprika
vs.
Erin,
Beast Player Erin

Voting for: Paprika

Group D-6
Duke
Togo
, Golgo 13
vs.
Taisou,
Giant Robo

Voting for: Taisou

I do not expect him to survive against the invincible Mr. Togo, of all people, but Taisou managed to pull off some very impressive feats in Giant Robo that are worthy of admiration and considering I'm not going to vote for Alberto over Yang...he deserves at least a bit of recognition.

Group D-7
Firo
Prochainezo
, Baccano!
vs.
Ichiro
Miyata
, Fighting Spirit

Voting for: Firo Prochainezo

Group D-8
Alucard,
Hellsing franchise
vs.
Kyouya
Ootari
, Ouran High School Host Club

Voting for: Alucard

As much as he might not necessarily be the most interesting character in Hellsing, Alucard definitely isn't a pushover as far as sheer coolness goes.

Group D-9
Yang Wen
Li
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
vs.
Alberto,
Giant Robo

Voting for: Yang Wen Li

I've been in something of a bind because both characters belong to a couple of my favorite shows, period, but a choice still has to be made. And that is why, in the end, Yang's stronger characterization wins out over Alberto's undeniable credentials as a memorable badass. Not to mention that he is, in fact, the best strategist in the show and this adds more than a little additional coolness to an already solid choice. Even as a Reinhard fan myself, I can't justify not voting for him here.

Group D-10
Saeko
Busujima
, High School of the Dead
vs.
Xellos,
Slayers franchise

Voting for: Saeko Busujima

No particular reason, to be honest, since I don't feel terribly confident about either pick myself.

Group D-11
Motoko
Kusanagi
, Ghost in the Shell franchise
vs.
Kakashi
Hatake
, Naruto franchise

Voting for: Motoko Kusanagi

Group D-12
Scar,
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
vs.
Dark
Schneider

Batou,

Voting for: Kamina

As much as I've never been a Kamina fan at all...it seems rather hard to justify voting against him this time around, in a tournament that is more or less tailored towards the kind of character he represents.

Having said that, I am a fan of Simon though...which means I'm willing to recognize Kamina as someone who did provide a few good inspirational moments, not to mention cool battle sequences, and remained a clear in-universe influence long after his time in the spotlight had ended.

I have nothing against Batou, either way, but...I just wish he had stood against someone else.

Round 1: Group D (Mixed) is now closed.

We went into the last of the 24 votes with the potential for one tie, but that did not happen. Though several matches ended up tighter than they initially appeared that they might be, everyone who was leading at the 15-vote mark maintained their lead to the end. Results:

D-1: Ladd Russo hangs on against a late surge by Porco Rosso, 13-11.
D-2: Arsene Lupin crushes Mikura Suzuki, 20-4.
D-3: Jin takes out Hitagi Senjourgahara, 15-9.
D-4: Spike Spiegel slams Genkai, 21-3.
D-5: Atsuko Chiba/Paprika fends off Erin, 13-11.
D-6: Duke Togo assassinates Taisou, 15-9.
D-7: Firo Prochainezo knocks out Ichiro Miyata, 18-6.
D-8: Alucard eliminates Kyouya Ootari, 17-7.
D-9: Yang Wen Li outclasses Alberto, 19-5.
D-10: Saeko Busujima slashes down Xellos, 15-9.
D-11: Motoko Kusanagi ghost-hacks Kakashi Hatake, 20-4.
D-12: Dark Schneider laughs over Scar's corpse, 18-6.
D-13: Shizuo Heiwajima buries Maximilen Jenius under a vending machine, 15-9.
D-14: Honoka sword-dances on Lucy, 17-7.
D-15: Sebastian Michaelis put Chouji Suitengu in his place, 18-6.
D-16: Kamina defeats Batou, 14-10.

I'm amazed that Porco Rosso got close enough at the end to make things interesting for Ladd, but overall I found the results to be pretty predictable. Looks like we've got some intriguing match-ups for next round, including the Motoko/Dark Schneider match-up, which I personally think will decide who claims the bottom half of the bracket.

Anyway, on to Round 2!

So now we’re cycling back to more pure bad-assery. I still think we have room for some blow-outs here, but I am personally expecting A-21 and especially A-23 to be very interesting.

Kambei Shimba, Samurai 7

Group A-17
Balalaika, Black Lagoon
vs.
Kambei Shimba, Samurai 7

I'll watch arguments on this one, but so far I have not seen any support for Kambei strong enough to unseat the ice-cold leader of Roanupur's Hotel Moscow branch. Balalaika.

Group A-18
Izumi Curtis, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise
vs.
Eikichi Onizuka, GTO

A more interesting - and possibly competitive - match, but I think there's a clear choice here. As tough as Izumi is, and as bad-ass as she's made out to be, she doesn't live and breath the attitude of a bad-ass like Onizuka does.

Group A-19
Michiko Malandro , Michiko to Hatchin
vs.
Roy Mustang, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise

I'm not all that crazy about voting Mustang into the third round, so show me some arguments compelling enough to change my mind, Michiko supporters!

Group A-20
Simon, Gurren Lagann
vs.
Guts, Berserk

If this match wasn't specifically in the bad-ass category then it might be worth entertaining arguments here, but only one or two others in the entire tournament can stand against Guts when it comes to being a bad-ass, and even with his universe-level antics at the end of the series, Simon isn't one of them.

Group A-21
Teresa, Claymore
vs.
Claire Stanfield, Baccano!

One of the two difficult matches of this round for me to pick. This is a remarkably even match, as both are top-of-their-series'-heap killers and both are quite capable of doing so with style. Both can also rightly claim to be cool even without considering their bad-ass merits. I have to give the edge to Teresa, though. Her abilities, relative to her series' power structure, are even more bad-ass than Claire's, and I feel that, in this case, her not being a psycopath also gives her an advantage. The true deciding factor, though, is that she doesn't hesitate to take action to save someone she's come to care about even though she knows that said actions will sign her own death warrant. Whether you look at it in a Bad-Ass sense or a Generic Cool sense, that's pretty damn cool.

Group A-22
Brandon/Beyond the Grave, Gungrave
vs.
Black Jack, Black Jack

Wow, do I not care at all here, especially since both of these just barely slipped by their first round opponents. Black Jack in lieu of strong comparative arguments to the contrary.

Group A-23
Kenpachi Zaraki, Bleach
vs.
Roronoa Zoro, One Piece

Characters from two popular shonen action series going head-to-head, eh? While I deeply respect the "fight with a third sword in your mouth" approach of Zoro, Kenpachi is the very essence of what it means to have a bad-ass attitude. In a series loaded with bravado, he still stands out.

Group A-24
Hei, Darker Than BLACK
vs.
Mugen, Samurai Champloo

Is Hei bad-ass enough to take out Mugen? Um, no. He has some nice moves but just doesn't impress enough.

And so Alberto falls, far, far too early. At least I'll know that he'll always be the champion of my heart Anime cry

For me, being cool or badass is a combination of three factors: attitude, ability and most importantly confidence. The attitude part can vary widely, as long as it makes the character memorable, but the other two are essential for me to consider a character cool.

Anyway, my votes:

Group A-17
Balalaika, Black Lagoon
vs.
Kambei Shimba, Samurai 7

Balalaika. Kambei is cool and all, but other than his ability to cut even battleships in half he's got nothing on Balalaika. BTW, her picture is still broken, Key.

Group A-18
Izumi Curtis, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise
vs.
Eikichi Onizuka, GTO

Izumi Curtis. I've always thought that Onizuka was more annoying than badass, but I'm not particularly fond of Izumi either, so I might chance my vote if someone provides good arguments.

Group A-19
Michiko Malandro, Michiko to Hatchin
vs.
Roy Mustang, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise

Michiko Malandro. I'll give Michiko the benefit of doubt here, since despite his abilities I've never found Roy to be particularly cool or badass, certainly nowhere near the level of Scar.

Group A-20
Simon, Gurren Lagann
vs.
Guts, Berserk

Guts. I'd pick Simon over many other candidates (even Kamina) any day, but even his reality breaking powers cannot match Guts sheer badassery. Even discounting his most awesome manga-only feats as demon hunter supreme, he's still a stonecold badass, born and bred on the battlefield and loving every minute of it.

Group A-21
Teresa, Claymore
vs.
Claire Stanfield, Baccano!

Claire Stanfield. The top pick of Baccano!, IMHO. Unwavering confidence and megalomania, backed by supreme gymnastic ablity, allowing him to effortlessly take on anything and anyone, up to and including immortals and other psychopaths, and doing so completely unarmed..

Group A-22
Brandon/Beyond the Grave, Gungrave
vs.
Black Jack, Black Jack

Black Jack.

Group A-23
Kenpachi Zaraki, Bleach
vs.
Roronoa Zoro, One Piece

Roronoa Zoro. Not too familiar with either, but the constant critisims of Bleach and praise for One Piece convince me to give Zoro my vote for now. Plus being able to effectively wield a sword in your mouth IS pretty badass.

Group A-24
Hei, Darker Than BLACK
vs.
Mugen, Samurai Champloo

Mugen

Group A-17 Balalaika

Group A-18 Eikichi Onizuka
Izumi was too much of a frustrated mother. Very superficial in brotherhood, and too melodramatic in the first.

Group A-19 Roy Mustang

Group A-20 Guts

Group A-21 Claire Stanfield
Tough one. I'll choose Claire mostly because Claymore didn't really handle Teresa's potential to its fullest.

Group A-22 Brandon/Beyond the Grave

Group A-23 Roronoa Zoro
Easy choice. I have a long lasting beef with Kenpachi's shallowness, and I just can't buy his crap. Bleach just made him indestructible. Even after Ichigo supposedly beat the crap out of him they came up with the fact that he just lost because he can't use bankai blah blah blah. Either way, it's mostly because of his shallowness that I stand against him.
On the other hand, his opponent isn't just as badass (but less ignorant and arrogant), but he's been through a fair amount of development, suffered mortal wounds for his friends and dream of becoming the world's top swordsman.

Group A-24 Mugen
Although I'd love to see Hei up against Zoro. Next match will be very interesting, unless Kenpachi gets by, which wouldn't be a surprise given Bleach's popularity with the tournament's participants.

Group A-17] Kambei Shimba, Samurai 7

Group A-18 Eikichi Onizuka, GTO
Having just finished FMA, Izumi is cool, but I can't honestly say she's as awesome as Onizuka.

Group A-19 Roy Mustang, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise
Also having finished the first FMA, Mustang is pretty damn cool, possibly the coolest character in the entire first series.

Group A-20 Simon, Gurren Lagann
I think that by the end of the series, Simon even out badasses Kamina, who is already quite badass. Part of it is that yes he starts off as a wimp, but he really comes into his own, I can respect that more than just being born badass in many ways.

Group A-21 Claire Stanfield, Baccano!
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Baccano! is chock full of badass characters and I find Claire to be the most badass of the badass for a number of reasons. One is his incredible acrobatic skills, another is his willingness to kill people in fun and interesting ways, and third is that he does it all spoiler[despite not being an immortal, so any damage he'd get would be for keeps]

Group A-22 Black Jack, Black Jack

Group A-23 Roronoa Zoro, One Piece

Group A-24 Mugen, Samurai Champloo
