Sorry if this is getting too much off-topic, but thanks Tony K. for the info for Deep Discount DVD. I guess if I just opt for the free shipping, an order shouldn't take too much time.

Would the movie trilogy work? I don't have a whole lot of money, and I really don't want to buy all of those dub only DVDs. If Zeta is coming out in September, then I've got plenty of time to save.

Movies will work. I'm personally on the lookout for them as well, since Cartoon Network never finished the TV series and my local anime rental haven only has 08th MS & Char's Counterattack (well...they also have Wing & G, but in terms of Universal Century...).

Well, personally -- and I know saying this in the presence of other Gundam fans is like sticking a shotgun in my mouth and pulling the trigger -- I'm actually having more fun watching SEED than I did watching the original series. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the historical significance of the original, I love it, and I'm sure it & Zeta are probably "higher quality" titles, but I'm simply getting more personal enjoyment out of watching SEED. I know a lot of Gundam fanboys will say I'm a heretic, or that I'm somehow less intelligent than they are or of inferior tastes because "SEED isn't as deep as Zeta" or "its is a ghey ripoff!!!!!!!11111111," but that's just my take on it. I absolutely love Gundam SEED, and I recommend it to just about anyone with an interest in mech anime.

i thought seed was an absolutely awesome show. while zeta remains my favorite of the universal century titles, seed is my favorite alternate universe gundam (haven't seen x or ∀ yet), and i consider it to be very nearly equal in quality to the former.

the only reason i would say that seed is *just* below zeta in quality is that seed has about 3 or 4 mostly-recap episodes, and they spend a lot of time in the middle showing the same flashbacks over and over. normally this isn't even a problem, but when you consider it alongside the fact that there are a couple of loose threads that could have been resolved in the time spent on those wasted episodes, it's a tad disappointing. nevertheless, i consider it the best animation i've been in many years, and come fall i'll be buying zeta *and* seed dvds with equal zeal.

((just for info, to date i've seen all gundam except 0083, f91, v, x, ∀, and the subtitled version of wing))

You have to see 0083. I haven't seen Zeta, but I LOVE 0083. It's so militarisitic, it's cool. I think having it in a 13 episode format was a little short. 26 probably would have done better, but it's well worth the watch I think.

The characters in 0083 aren't too great, but story-wise, I regard it very highly as a great military drama. But that's just me based on my sparse knowledge of the Gundam universe.

You say you've yet to see Wing in subs. Why? You didn't like it in English? Well for me, Wing was the first Gundam series I ever saw. In addition to really liking the Ocean Group though, I loved every single voice they casted. But not so you think I'm an elitist, I suppose the dubbing could have been a bit miscasted. All of the young people don't really sound 'young' enough, but of course that's just one of the differences between U.S. and Japanese voices (actually, I think the Ocean Group is Canadian...)

Anyway, I hope you try to watch 0083 sometime soon. If you want to buy the R1 DVDs cheap, you can go to:

www.deepdiscountdvd.com

You can save up to at least 30% from the regular retail price.

By the way, what's that sqaure you listed after X?

Its an upside down 'A,' as in "Turn-A" Gundam. Your browser must not be set to whatever text encoding it needed to see it properly.

ah, believe you me, i'll be seeing 0083 as soon as possible. the only reason i haven't is simply a case of too many great shows, not enough funds (at the moment, anyway).

that's *mostly* also the reason why i haven't seen the wing subs yet (i liked the dub just fine), but in that case there's also the fact that i just didn't find the character designs all that visually appealing (to be honest, i found the style kind of uh... ugly on some of the characters). but admittedly, that's a superficial reason to miss out on something that's possibly a good show, so i still intend to see it eventually (i figure that with its popularity i can probably find the complete missions boxset for not too much someday).

and yeah, like swordfish_II mentioned, that was an upside-down A.

So what makes SEED so enjoyable to watch? Is it the animation? The music? The story?

Is there any info you can give me that won't spoil it yet? A friend of mine has some fansubs, but I want to wait and see the dub first.

I also hear that, much like every other AU Gundam series, SEED steals from the original. Is that true? Don't tell me how. I just want a 'yes' or a 'no.' I have the first OST, and I saw a picture of some guy with a Char mask.

And finally, I was thinking of buying the two R1 discs for 0080 someday, but I've heard mixed reviews. But since the entire thing is only six episodes and stays in sync with the UC timeline, I thought "why not?" Thanks in advance.

i'm not nagisa, but i found seed great because of so many things. firstly, i thought that it was the first production i've seen to use what can be classified as the 2000 and beyond "look" of anime ((think about the 80s look, the 90s look, etc and you'll see what i mean)) and made it really work in terms of design and fluidity. it's much less boring to look at than a lot of other modern shows (though this doesn't come across so well in still screens). secondly, the plot is really powerful, with a clear theme from beginning to end that is also full of the kinds of twists and betrayals you might expect from a gundam show. most all of the characters have really extreme and defined personalities and the interactions between them are just great to watch. the climax of the series uses this to full effect, 40+ episodes of intense character drama finally explodes in a series of payoffs that just have to be seen. during episodes 49 and 50, i was literally sitting on the edge of my seat, clutching the sides of the chair and screaming things like "SHOW HIM THE JUSTICE!!"

anyway, i really liked the series.

as for claims that it "rips off" the first series, well... i would certainly consider it more of an homage. while it's true that the first 20 or so eps contain plot points that vaguely mirror those from the first series, the reasons behind their happening and the way they're resolved and even what they mean in the context of the plot is totally different. besides, let's be honest. masked villains, 18th century-esque military uniforms, space colonies, and personal rivalries are gundam trademarks. just to point out the first example, the gundam series contains the following mask-wearing characters: char, kycilia zabi, quattro (wears dark sunglasses for 99% of his on-screen time), some guy from f91 (i *think*), chronicle asher (v gundam), ulube (g gundam), zechs (wing), the bespectacled merc captain from x, and kuruuze (seed). a gundam show would probably recieve more complaints if it *didn't* have these elements ((just look at the majority of opinions about g gundam (which i liked, personally))).

also, i heartily recommend 0080. good story, great animation, fierce character designs by mikimoto, and *astounding* mecha.
