If anything I'd say light novels are beneath where they were before the bubble burst. There was a tme I could get several series over the year like Slayers, Twelve Kingdoms, Fullmetal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic, Crest of the Stars, and some things I'm not proud of like novels for Love Hina, dot hack, and Gundam Seed. Today, Tokyopop still publishes any piece of paper with dot hack written on it, and is giving us Twelve Kingdoms at a trickle, but a lot of the old stuff died unfinished in America. A few slip through on big names like Death Note and Haruhi, but I don't see the medium making a comeback anytime soon.
Shame, because there is stuff in Japan I'd like to read. I'd like to finish my Slayers set, continue on with Crest of the Stars, read the inspiration for Captian Tylor, and see how the material for Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro Chan works in prose just to name a few. Asit stands, I just hope that Tokyopop doesn't completely go under before getting out the last 3 plot based Twelve Kingdoms books. |

I can only find the lite novels in the manga section, myself, like Brian. They're not really being treated as literature. Not that they have much literary value, but if the companies were attempting to sell them as regular books, I'd say they're not doing that great a job, as far as I can tell.
I'd like to see some of those Tenchi Muyo novels published, maybe make a little more sense of that third OVA. As far as 3D, I can see somebody like Rintaro doing something with that. Or whenever they do another retread of Appleseed or Ghost in the Shell. |

Otakon is a claustrophobic nightmare. Trust me on this one. It's gotten better at least, I'll give it that.

I didn't have too much of a problem the last time I went, but that was in 2006, I believe. There were tons of people, but I just figured that was the way it was supposed to be. |

I'm totally apathetic about 3D, partially because my experience with IMAX 3D-enhanced Hollywood movies is that they all induce headaches with me very easily and partially because I damaged my left eye in 2008 and have reduced vision in it to the point that I can barely see real life in 3D anymore.
Even when 3D is an option, and I'm in a city with plenty of IMAX screens around, I choose to see all my films in 2D. That's one of many ways I'm a luddite. Plus the tickets are cheaper. (Not that I've seen Avatar either way, due to lack of interest.) |

I think certain anime would be pretty neat to watch in 3D, like Satoshi Kon's work, and I think someone already mentioned GitS. But it would be a giant waste of money/effort for a lot of the crap out there. As for hentai, I think 3D tentacles and anything squirting at me would be too freaky, although I'm sure there are a lot of other elements that people would enjoy in 3D

We are also in a recession. Even if people want to argue entertainment hasn't been affected, travel/vacations have by all accounts I've read. Allegedly the reason movies did so well this year was more people cancelled expensive vacations so they were treating themselves to movies. We've also seen the talk of people sticking closer to home. I know my last trip to Knotts seemed like way more license plates in the parking lot were California.
Comic-con sold out their 4 day passes in about 3 months. I bought my Saturday pass the day they went up for sale & they were sold out within 4 days. A month after they went on sale in mid-December, the Friday passes are almost sold out. Maybe anime cons are social events, but Comic-con is the celebrities & sellers. That sales floor tends to stay fairly packed as people hunt down things they've been dying to get their hands on. There's also the displays in the booths. And of course the cosplayers. There also seems to be a faithful following for the info side of things--panels for everything from how to panels to insider info panels (I usually enjoy the Lost in Translation panel). Yes, there are people hanging out together, but it seems to me more people are always on their way to this or that panel THe Protect Act thing is horrifying. I hoped with the last Administration leaving we'd see some return to sanity, but it hasn't happened. |

I'm not sure what you are talking about? Right now there are less light novels coming out in the US than before. And most have been cancelled. Before there were way more than 5 series coming out, and now I can't even think of 5 still ongoing oO (Haruhi, Vampire D, maybe Spice and Wolf... what else?) I don't know how well Haruhi is doing or how well Spice and Wolf is doing now ... but to me it looks like light novels are still as unpopular as ever and much less are being published right now than before and doesn't look like it's going to change that soon.
gah, I think Kino's Journey and 12 Kingdoms are great works of literature, even "pedagogically useful" and can easily compare to other young adult fantasy novels (unless you consider that those have not much literary value either, but then quite a lot of books don't have any so it makes no difference xD ).
Yea, and I'd like to know why. Tokyopop even changed the covers for many so that they wouldn't look like mangas. Maybe because Tokyopop is a manga only publisher? |

I've seen them all over the place in bookstores, which also could be hurting their sales, seeing as most stores seem to be at a loss for where to put them. The Haruhi series I've found in the Manga section and the Young Adult section, while Spice and Wolf was in SciFi/Fantasy. It's sad that light novels don't sell well here. I would love to be able to read Baccano!, Durarara!!, Toradora!, and anything written by Nisio Isin, just to name a few titles. However, for the most part, light novels are at a young adult reading level, which is saturated not only with a lot of books, but several big-name series that have a stranglehold on that age group. I mean, do translated young adult series from countries other than the US do well in the US? Are there even any other than Japanese light novels? |

Takoyaki is one of my all-time favorite Japanese snacks, but you really need to eat it in Osaka. It's really hard to get good takoyaki anywhere else, no matter what people say.
Picking on umeboshi is stupid. It's like a condiment. And I disagree that it's "shunned by foreigners". The useless little umeboshi you get with a conbini bento should be throw away. The good ones are soft and not too salty or bitter. I mean, it IS a pickled plum, right?? That's like giving someone a hot dog and asking what they think and all they talk about is the funky yellow sauce that they didn't like. Next time order it without mustard. Oh, and natto?? LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS: "The stuff looks like someone got stuffed a bag of soy beans down a congested person's nose, forced them to swallow it, and then made them barf it back up. Smells like it too. I have had natto before, despite the nasty appearance, and can say that it tasted just as I described." Yep, that pretty much sums it up. |

While the ero-doujin issue remains unresolved, there's currently an interesting case about whether or not underage teen "sexting" is a form of child porn. If the "sexters" lose the case, I'm wondering if the decision would be used to prosecute the doujin online, too.

Don't you mean Double D? I loved Avatar: The Last Rainforest. Do people today not watch Aliens and T2? They were equally long, loud, innovative, gorgeous and full of plot holes and general stupidity, so I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone expected this would be substantially different. |

On the issue of the law and erotic manga and anime.
Folks may be interested to know that Christopher Handley is scheduled to be sentenced on the 25th. http://www.iasd.uscourts.gov/index.php?option=com_jcalpro&Itemid=99999999&extmode=view&extid=1198522 On his plea see the earlier report on ANN: animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-05-20/christopher-handley-pleads-guilty-to-possession-charges |

The Handley link broke.
Instead go to: http://www.iasd.uscourts.gov/ and do a search for Handley. |

If we are talking about 3D of the sort in Avatar, then I will avoid 3D anime like the plague. It seems like nothing more than an attempt to make relatively 2D anime more like live action--which is the last thing I want. That would be like exhorting painters to produce works which couldn't be distinguished from photographs. Plus, 3D animation sometimes induces motion sickness in me. Keep it away!
