How hot is it that Tim Curry does anime now? Thank you ANN; I never realized this. Has he ever appeared at conventions?
*edit*
My god! And Cary Elwes??! Disney rocks.

I'm kind of sad about Totoro though.

But I'm looking forward to The Cat Returns just for the dub. Maybe someone will make an audience participation script.

What I don't like about this batch of dvd's is that they are more expensive, a few years ago Spirited away, Castle in the sky, and Kiki's delivery service were $19.99, and now the new DVD are now 29.99.

I'm pretty sure the last batch of Ghibli titles also sported the $29.99 MSRP. Personally, I bought mine for $23 at Borders and wouldn't even have to spend that much except I had a gift card. The $29.99 is just inflated so that it can then be sold "on sale". Rolling Eyes

Personally, I won't hold my breath until these movies actually come out. Neutral

I don't care too much about Totoro, I've always thought it's been overrated (especially after becoming familiar with Mamoru Hosoda's work). And then I got excited for The Cat Returns - not particularly for the movie itself, but because the Japanese DVD contains Ghiblies Episode Two as an extra, which would be worth the MSRP even if the movie itself sucked. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any sign of it appearing on the American release, and I doubt anyone cares enough to start a letter-writing campaign like they did with Mononoke.

I hadn't planned on buying Totoro because I already own the Fox release. The dub was quite acceptable. My kids love it. Now I get to buy all three instead. If this stays maybe we can get more of those "buy all three" deals like last time. There was a fresh load of Totoro dvd's in the $5 Walmart bin this past week.

I've noticed that the msrp for movies has shot through the roof these past two years. I haven't seen a movie actually priced at msrp in ages though. The rise in msrp has been a lot faster than the rise in shelf price. It just makes those 40% off deals look even better.

Part of me is glad they're setting aside Mimi wo Sumaseba if it'll get the others out faster because [blasphemy]I didn't really like it all that much. It was too saccharine for me, the same thing turned me off Castle of Cagliostro[/blasphemy]. I would much rather have some of the Takahata titles, especially Tonari no Yamada-kun.

I want my uber-special edition release of Princess Mononoke. All we've got now is the crap bare-bones edition from Miramax that came out about 4 or 5 years ago. No Japanese track, no extras at all, and the English Dub (which I liked, for the record) was on one of the poorest Dolby5.1 tracks I've ever put into a home theater.

Wait... whaaa? Are we talking about the same movie? Because my Miramax Mononoke DVD has the Japanese track right on there. Mayhaps you purchased a bootleg?

Well, technically, it's my roommate's disc, so I don't know where he got it. It really looks authentic, but all we've got is the damn French language track on it. The only version on Amazon.com only lists the French track as well. Did they release another version when I wasn't looking, and one that isn't listed on Amazon anymore?

Listing for Princess Mononoke:

Strange... I *know* I saw Mononoke on a DVD that had both Japanese and English tracks, because it was the first anime movie I got my family to watch, and I disctinctly remember watching it both dubbed and subbed. I didn't own the DVD though, just rented it, so I couldn't go check...

All of the reviews of Princess Mononoke at Anime On DVD mention the Japanese track, and the copy I bought in 2000 has the Japanese track. I think there were some copies sold where the Japanese track wasn't mentioned on the packaging, since they printed the covers before the final specs of the DVDs were worked out, for some reason, but I think all the Region 1 DVDs have it if you check the Languages menu.

The first release of Princess Mononoke lacked The japanese track. I don't know how many of those sold but all subsequant discs have both tracks. I seem to remember a petition was sent to Miramax asking for the Japanese version, it may be an instance when a petition actually worked.

Well, crap.

We do have the initial version sans the Japanese Track. Sucks to be me.

I'm still holding out for the Criterion/Collecter's/Special/Director's Edition.

No they originally planned to release it without Japanese but due to the uproar over that they only released it with Japanese.

However to watch it in Japanese you need to select the language from the menu. If my memory serves me well you cannot do so from the audio button on your remote.

I've got the Fox release of Totoro on DVD too, it's cute Smile

I wonder if there are licensing problems re: Totoro? Maybe that's what was causing the delay all this time. hm....

Now that I think about it, I wonder if Disney is purposely trying to delay the (re)release of Totoro because it's something that will really appeal to the "kiddie" market they seem to like so much. Dakota Fanning is the voice of Satsuki in their version, too. I'll bet they'll mention that quite a bit when it's time to advertise Totoro. Maybe Disney wants to wait until more of Fox's version is out of stores (all the advertising in the world won't help if Fox's version is still on the shelves and priced cheaper).

Although I know they didn't do it with Kiki or Castle in the Sky -- does anyone think that, maybe, Disney is considering making a theatre release of Totoro?

There were a few familiar Totoro characters in Spirited Away (the soot sprites, most noticeably)... mentioning that sure couldn't hurt promoting Totoro.

Yeah, I've seen variations of that theory the around in various places over the past week, and it's not tinfoil-hattish like most conspiracy theories about Disney and Ghibli. The theory that, assuming there are no more legal hurdles from the Fox license for Disney to jump, Disney is just holding off from putting out the bilingual Totoro a little while longer so that there will be fewer unsold Fox Totoro DVDs, is more of a "Disney wants to maximize potential profits" theory than a conspiracy theory, so, while no one without inside information can know for sure, this theory is far more likely than most to have some degree of truth to it.

Or it could just be that Disney has to re-negotiate their contract with Ghibli over Totoro to include dvd rights, as they might only have had vhs and theatrical rights at the time they signed. Cat Returns probably had the fewest legal hurdles to release in the U.S., which was part of why Disney decided to send it out first. (That, and as I said earlier, it appeals more to
newer anime fans over here.)
