If they actually wanted to be diverse they could have gotten something like Jormugand, Tiger and Bunny, Inuyasha Final Act, A Certain Magical Index/Railgun. Those shows would have given off a more diverse feeling then DBZ Kai.

Jormungand has several shots of nudity (nipples) included in the DVD/Blu-ray release. AFAIK any anime with nudity are excluded from being considered by Toonami; unless Funimation provided simulcast (censored) video masters...

Black Lagoon is airing, and it had a chick editing a porno video and actually showed the monitor she was editing on, lots of it was blurred. So I don't think nudity would be a big issue with Jormungand.

Of all the shows I expected people to say would be a problem because of nudity... Jormungand wasn't even on the list. Index and Railgun would be top of that list, so I'd guess you might not have seen them.

This. I can't see it being a problem at all.

Also, could totally see them airing Jormungand sometime after they air all of Black Lagoon's seasons (including hopefully they find a way to do the OVA third season even though the runtimes are a bit too long for standard slots). It feels like Black Lagoon's been extremely successful so far so I could totally see them doing Jormungand eventually.

I don't know. If the thing they are giving is something that has literally been around for 10 years pretty much non-stop, Bebop, or has been around so long and is available in multiple media formats, has aired on two different channels like DBZ, then I'd say people have some reason to be upset.

This isn't like them getting a show that has had limited exposure or is fairly new. These are both shows that have been around for a long time and are pretty well known. It seems like a good idea but come on, some people are going to be tired of them no matter how you try to dress it up.

@Dangermouse, I honestly would have preferred them airing Jormungand before Black Lagoon, it just felt like it was a better series compared to Black Lagoon. I liked majority of the characters in Jormungand while I really can't stand most of the ones in Black Lagoon.

Every other show is locked in either due to contracts or ratings, their not going to move Naruto Shippuden because that's Vizs only spot at the top.
I think Bleach would prefer a chance to finish airing its last cour before you ignore its existence. Though it does raise the question of what will happen to its slot later this year. Hard to believe AS would put a 7-year show into full rerun at the head of their lineup.
DBZ Kai is replacing Bleach.

Not so much as "replacing" Bleach as it if that Jason Demarco felt the need to rationalize getting DBZ Kai with they need another "big appeal show" for people and nothing has the same appeal as Bleach except for DBZ Kai.

He completely ignores the fact that they have Shippuden and One Piece, both have which have bigger followings then Bleach that could be used as the "anchor" of the block.

Complaining about the two biggest names in anime in America airing again on American television doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Yeah, Toonami should have newer shows, too. Guess what? It does. And it's looking into getting more.

What's the controversy?

In Bebop's case, it's spending money, money they have consistently complained was limited, to get a show they have aired nonstop since 2001, a show viewers have long since grown sick of, and it will be the exact same edits and SD from 2001. Let Bebop die. Let it die so everyone can like it again.

I'd say money is no longer that big of an issue for them since they are willing to throw it at Bebop again and get a show that would be considered sloppy thirds.

Glad too see Dragon Ball Z Kai, though not sure how much i could take of it Smile.

Though we do have a lot of "new anime" on the network. Exorcist, Lagoon, Titan, hell even one piece, bleach and shippuden count technically... Plus the late night old toonami shows at the 5 am mark. So showing a few of the classics could work to even out the block.

As for Bebop, i feel its good to revisit bebop every year at least once. Also when i think of cartoon network and adult swim i think bebop. It may do better to place it later in the run (3 am beyond). Perhaps after the 184 showing someone might revisit the franchise and perhaps back some "Lost episode" or story things. To bad we are past the 15 year anniversary of the series airing. Don't they do something special typically?

If they somehow work out a Sailor Moon deal...that might be pushing it...

in all honesty who didn't see this coming??

Yeah, it became more and more obvious as the replacement for Bleach. I hadn't thought about it much until Bleach hit the last season, which made me wonder what its replacement would be. It was almost certainly going to be a long shonen series since those are consistent, and given that DBZ was integral to the old Toonami, and the fact that they aired Cooler's Revenge last week, and there didn't seem to be too many contenders left.

I suppose it will be alright since I haven't watched much of the Kai version, and it might be fun to see DBZ again since I haven't watched it in years. Then again, I was hoping for something unfamiliar.

I'm not terribly thrilled about Bebop airing again. I get that Toonami doesn't have much of a budget, especially for the really late night hours, but still. The later slots have been consistently filled with Cartoon Network shows which they obviously didn't have to pay for, so it seems like maybe that could have been used for something that hasn't aired so many times. Rerunning Trigun would be a change of pace at this point, and I can't imagine it would cost much more than Bebop. Plus, with Badlands Rumble airing in December, there might be some renewed interest.

Wow, color me surprised; I would've thought for sure that Nicktoons would pick up the rights (considering how much of a ratings success I've always heard the first 98 episodes were for them; I mean, I can understand how they got Shippuden, since as it went on, it was more and more of a ratings failure for DX_D, or so I've heard) but I guess the temptation of not having to make/commission any edits (though I suppose there's also that Cartoon Network/adult swim reaches a lot more homes in the US than Nicktoons, IIRC) was too much for FUNimation to resist. Laughing I wonder if Nicktoons even expressed any interest in it. I also wonder if they'll be starting over with episode 1, or going from episode 99. Another thing that's interesting is that it seems Vortexx still has the broadcast TV rights; I wonder if those will be expiring soon or if they'll renew them. It would be interesting if an edited version was produced specifically for that, with the uncut episodes airing the same night. I can't be the only one who would find such a scenario incredibly interesting... can I?

Hm, I wonder if the Cowboy Bebop they're showing this time will finally be the uncut, unedited one, since judging from Kyle Pope's edit list of the 2001 version that they had been showing since that point (and also based on what [little] I've seen of the unedited version) there is nothing that violates today's adult swim standards. I suppose it remains to be seen.

Finally, this is more of a general gripe than anything else, but I really do wish adult swim would start playing the next episode previews for all their anime (I mean, I'm pleased that Attack on Titan, Space Dandy [last I checked], and Black Lagoon get to keep theirs) but honestly, I would be fine if they had to scrap the openings and/or endings completely to do so (though obviously, I would just prefer them shortened, haha). It would be cool if they'd include the NEPs for the versions of the episodes uploaded to their website or something like that. I'm wondering if Kai will keep its NEPs or not.
