Let us be honest, Anno, and Imaishi (and maybe someone else) WERE Gainax.

Negative. Hiroyuki Yamaga, Hideaki Anno, Toshio Okada, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Shinji Higuchi before going on to co-found Gonzo), Yasuhiro Takeda, and Takami Akai WERE Gainax. They were just fans coming out of college, most of whom didn't really have any business sense, but a group of certified otaku with a crazy amount of talent & creativity.

Imaishi came later but he too had that Gainax flare (you'd think Dead Leaves was one of their works at first glance), which is why he & Trigger ended up getting the rights to everything he created over there.

Who has the rights to KareKano now, and can we get a license rescue?

Gainax in the early 00s was quite different in terms of style compared to the 90s and 80s, and I believe that Imaishi and Kazuya Tsurumaki had a lot to do with that. Yoshinori Kanada's influence is very prominent in all of Imaishi's directed episodes from that time.

Not sure about Japan but it has always been part of the Enoki Films catalog.

Sounds like all their resources / properties where fully embezzled, turning Gainax into a debt dumping ground.

The only real question is if the court will seeks to reverse sales of intangible properties if it deems them illegally sold under value in an attempt to shift assets.

To this day I still don't understand how Houkago no Pleiades even got made. Where the funding came from is clear, but who was left to actually make it, and do it so good?

An "official" end of an era. Thank you Gainax for all the GOAT series you made.

Khara has now acquired the Gainax trademark and serves as the manager of the trademark.

Anno: You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me.

It's unfortunate this happened, but given the long running issues Gainax has had, it's unsurprising.

At least Khara is still around

I can't recall the last time Gainax even mad a show. All their talent left and it was just a name for the longest time it seems like. I suppose the loss of the name is sad but the guys behind it live on.

IIRC Houkago no Pleiades was their last TV series, about a decade ago. I don't think they've made anything bigger than an ad since.

when everyone left there was some few that didn't leave until 2015 or so when the other gainax studios started to appear.
