Why are people suggesting this series is moe or a harem? It's pretty much straight-up romance with some supernatural action.

Were those even released by Bandai Visual in Japan?

They wouldn't recoup the costs of the dub, they'd suffer losses. BVUSA, to my understanding, doesn't pay the excessive license fees that say, ADV or FUNimation would have to pay. Why? They (as in Bandai Visual), produced the series. They have global rights to it and can jack up the license cost or well, give it to the USA wing, Bandai Visual USA. BVUSA is more-or-less, making PURE profit. They don't want to take on losses(which is understandable), so they don't dub or lessen prices, which has a history of over time, biting a company off the map(i.e. Geneon).

If you are selling niche titles like sola, Shigofumi, Haruka and True Tears -- it would be smart to cut your losses - which would be a dub, which costs probably around $10,000-20,000 an episode -- they would need to sell a lot of discs at standard American MSRP of $29.99 and with such niche series as these, they WOULD NOT recoup costs and they would end up just like Geneon, in a crippled, vegetative state.

BVUSA is targeting 3 consumer groups it seems -- the importer, the audio/videophiles and the collector. BVUSA knows what I want -- I want superb video quality and neat little collectibles, that I can "Ooo.. ahhh..." over. Geneon, ADV and BEUSA -- but now also BVUSA, have given me A-quality video/audio in the past. I love that. It's just the best experience in the world to me. I'm not an importer, so I can't speak there.

I'll gladly defend BVUSA, because I understand why they don't dub and why they charge R2 prices. I'm paying for a quality release that I can't get anywhere else, because with ADV's condition unknown, Geneon in a coma and BEUSA's defective risks. Who can I rely on for QUALITY audio and video? Certainly not FUNimation - even though it has gotten better as of late, but those are at a moral cost. BVUSA = quality releases, with quality extras.

I will gladly support sola and Shigofumi. I'll probably even support True Tears eventually.

Haven't you heard?

Everything is moe now, and it's destroying anime!

Wow! People complaining about professional subs over dub? Sometimes it's usually the opposite. But I do agree with these statements of overpricing. With the recent shamble the anime industry is in (bootlegging and fansubbing being a major factor), the overpricing could also be a small ticket to it.

I expected this, but its still disappointing. At least sola's volume count won't be outrageous (5 discs for 15 episodes is a step back a couple years but 4 discs for 12-13 episode series used to be the norm and this is basically the same thing), though the prices will probably be higher to counteract it. This makes series #2 I'm getting from BV, maybe #3 if I end up caving on Shigofumi (and I probably will).

I probably won't like this one, but just to be sure; if I hated Shuffle and H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~ is there any chances I'd like sola? And on a sightly unrelated note, how about True Tears, what do you guys think?

Edit: Spelling.

Those two are closer to the typical harem series. sola still leans that way a bit, but not to the degree those titles did. I can't really say on this or True Tears unless I know more about what you do and don't like. What was it about Shuffle and H20 you didn't like?

I never watched Sola and I don't think all companies should always add dubs to all anime (a lot don't require the necessity of dubs) but I despise BVUSA for their Japanese pricing.

I agree! I was wondering why anime seemed so boring lately, and then I realized after watching a TON of anime from the 1970's and 1980's that I there was very little school related stuff and like zero moe stuff. Then that started to change in the 1990's, and now in the 2000's its all about the moe and nothing but moe, so its really really super boring.

But that being said, I kind of liked Sola, so I will probably eventually buy it, but I have sooo many other titles to buy from BVUSA right now, it may take me until next year to buy them all.... Prices are twice or more what I pay for elsewhere, but I will pay a premium for some series just to get them - but Sola is sorta on the back burner.

I thought Panon was being facetious. >_>

Seriously, there are more anime series now than there used to be. If you want to skip the moe ones, go for it.

He is. But it always amuses me when people say something like that and don't mean it and then someone agrees with them and starts ranting. Especially when its the typical "rawr, moe is teh evil and detroy my animu" stuff.

I really loved sola and it is one of my favorite anime series. It is a great anime and has a wonderful cast. Mamiko Noto did a wonderful job as Matsuri Shihou. sola was actually one of the first series that I watched and followed fansubbed while it was still airing in Japan. I would love to own sola on DVD. However, I am not sure if I want to pay Bandai Visual USA's prices to own it. If some company besides them had licensed it then I wouldn't have any reservations about buying it. I was hoping that Funimation would have picked it up and given it a good dub. I loved the job that the Japanese cast did. However, I would love to watch the anime without having to rely on reading subtitles. I am planning on buying the manga when Broccoli Books releases it this Summer. So, I definitely will support the manga version of sola. I will have to think about supporting the anime version though.

Is it possible that you think anime is so boring lately because you have no freaking clue what you're actually watching? When was the last time you actually tried to play one of the mega popular games most "moe crap" anime is based on? My guess is most people that bitch and moan about moe don't actually give a shit about what is popular in Japan.
I hate to break it to you, but we have no right to dictate where the anime industry in Japan actually goes. If moe is so popular right now because throngs of Japanese men spend inordinately large amounts of time fapping at light speed in front of their PCs, then you'll just have to suck it up.

Well sola, you and I will never meet again. I watched one episode, and didn't felt the need to rush through...so i could wait. But seeing as who is selling this....well. It's off my list.

Unless, they end up being super cheap down the line- via rightstuf or whatever.
