As much as I enjoyed the first season, I'm pretty skeptical I'll enjoy this much. I assume we move into Sullen McGrumpyface's story, and that was the worst part of the first season. Does he become an interesting character at all?

Oh boy, you'll definitely love this next season then. The upcoming parts are controversial because those who loved the war and violence didn't much like it, but it's 100% about Thorfinn's character development and growing beyond who he was in the first part.
In my opinion, this part is when Vinland Saga really Gets Good, and basically everything that happened before was just a prequel to this bit. It really feels like this is the story that Yukimura had wanted to write all along.
