Before this turns into a raging argument here...

IMHO it looks like a fairly specious argument on the part of the prosecutor. But the fact that the prosecutor brought it up, regardless of the validity of it being brought up, makes it newsworthy.

Anytime anime or manga are brought up in relation to a murder case, we'll cover it. Even if anime or manga really had nothing to do with the case.

What news article is this for? My first guess would be this is related to that murder of a student that happened over stuff to do with an Advance Wars forum (it could be an entirely different incident), but if it is then yeah the link to manga is kinda stretching it.

Edit: Okay article is now up. I was completely wrong on that. It still seems to be stretching the point here to blame it on manga.

I don't think "manga is being blamed". the prosecutor puts it forward as evidence of intent.

Say I kill my roommate by poison. If the police search my apartment and find dozens of books where someone poisons their victims, it'll be introduced as evidence of forethought.

That's the way I am reading it as well. Sounds to me like they are blaming the room mate. And just trying to prove motive, intent and glaring similarities. Anything that will link the two so a reasonable case can be brought. ANN should also mention that they were dressed as vampires the night before.

Great, I have at least two Bibles in my room. So much for killing people with a plague of locusts.

Seriously though, I'm sure you could find a lot of commonalities if you look hard enough. I'm surprised video games weren't mentioned prior to manga.

I hate to sound morbid but I kind of wish there were some comparisons with crime scene photos so I could at least know if the Prosecutor in the case has a point about the simularities. My first thought is that, unless the victim was posed to resemble the manga, then the comparison doesn't have much meaning. Maybe it could be evidence of intent but that's a weak argument in my opinion.

This case makes me feel pretty bad though since it's almost like we're exporting murder to another country with the killer being American. Knowing more details would likely just make the whole thing just that much more depressing in general.

A prosecutor in an Italian hearing on a British student's murder asserted that there were similarities between manga found in a suspect's apartment and the crime scene.

Insert comment about the Italian mafia here. Rolling Eyes

You seriously have no idea how much that comment freaking made my day. Plus, now you can't do a Cain and hit your brother over the head with a rock...

In other news, I hope they react like "ZOMG Manga = Murders!!" But rather just use it as evidence that they did it (if it was true). But anyway, I'm curious to reason why the alleged murderers would slash their roomate's throat...

Less noisy than a gun and highly effective? (Okay, that's really morbid isn't it?)

This looks like a reference, but not directly saying that manga is to blame. That I think could be considered a smart move by the prosecution.

This is a big story here in the Seattle area because the American murderer is from here. The news has recently reported that the murder was part of a "Satanic ritual", but (fortunately?) the manga angle hasn't been reported.

Um, the Bible example is totally asinine.

Remember, kids, Fiction has NEVER EVER inspired someone to do anything bad. Or even given someone ideas on "how cool" it would be to do something similar to someone they hate.

Plenty of other ways. Crucify them, put a crown of thorns on their head, behead them, drown them in a river, have them drink "wine" from a bad "water to wine" magic kit, etc. etc. etc. They will link any of those right to the bible...

As usual, they are just grasping at straws...
