I'm on one of my classic anime kicks again, and this time I'm feeling a strong urge to see Armitage III.
The only catch is, I don't know which version to buy. There are two versions out now, yes? A special American movie version which has been around for a while, and the original 4-part OAV series which was released more recently?
Which version is better? Or, if you prefer, which version is better for someone who is a complete newbie to the series?
If there's much of a difference, I'd rather buy the one that will give me the best perspective and understanding of the series in the long run.

sailormech,
It’s nice to see you again. Armitage III (poly-matrix) was one of the first ten discs I ever bought. At the time I could only get the “movie” version with the dub voices by Elizabeth Berkley (Showgirls) and Kiefer Sutherland (24, Young Guns). It had a running time of about ninety minutes and I thought (at the time) it was a pretty good movie (if not a little disjointed at the end).
Sometime last year (2002) the next movie (dual-matrix) was released in the States. I won’t tell you anything about it here, but it more or less continued a few years after the movie had left off.
Anyway, after I had already seen poly-matrix I was told that the movie was actually just a compilation of the four OVA episodes with a bit of a different ending to it. Recently the OVA became available here in the States on DVD as well so…I bought that too.
In my opinion the four part OVA tells the story much better than the movie. I admit that I like Berkley and Sutherland’s voices better…but if you’re looking for the best perspective you MUST watch the OVA.
The movie (poly-matrix) leaves out many things that I thought were vital to a smooth story progression and it also shortens up the ending too much for my taste. If you like the OVA (I think you will) you might want to rent the movie just to see what I’m talking about.
One last thing…dual-matrix was…ok. It wasn’t nearly as good as I thought the first story was, but it wasn’t terrible either. We learn a few new things about Armitage that I thought we were a little too far along to be surprised with…but none the less…not a bad movie.

I haven't seen the OAVs yet. (Actually, the DVD should be sitting at work waiting for me...figures it would arrive the one day I have off.) However, I did see both Dual-Matrix and Poly-Matrix.
Dual-Matrix: I wasn't overly fond of Elizabeth Berkeley's voice, but not enough that it made me hate the movie. (The movie is usually somewhere on my favorites list.) I thought the storyline was well told too. There wasn't any part of the movie where I was like "WTF are they talking about?" This is also one of my highly recommended movies.
Poly-Matrix: Much better voice acting. Juliette Lewis did a MUCH better job. There are definite parts of the movie where you go "WTF are they talking about?" but it all gets pretty well explained by the end of the movie. IMHO, the animation is better in this one too. However, Dual-Matrix will always be higher on my list....because it's dear to my heart and because I knew what was going on just about every second of it.
From what I hear, the OAVs just go into deeper detail. I'd recommend seeing all of them Armitage rocks!

Cassandra,
You and I differ on the Elizabeth Berkley dub…I rather enjoyed it. Ah well, each to their own.
With respect though, you have your “matrix’s” mixed up. Poly-matrix was the movie that Berkley and Sutherland “redubbed”…dual-matrix was the second movie.
If you enjoyed the movies as much as you say you’ll absolutely love the OVA.
Edit: (possible small spoiler)
Oh yes…and when I mentioned that poly-matrix was “disjointed” near the end I was more or less referring to the Earth/Mars “One world, one nation” thing near the end. It seemed to me like they just threw it in our laps and said “deal with it”. The OVA explained it some better in my opinion.

I do that all the time....I just have it stuck in my mind that a Poly-Matrix should be the second not the first
My big problem with Berkeley's voice is that every time she spoke, it made me think "That's the chick from Saved By The Bell!!" I shouldn't have that problem with voice actors. That's why it's called voice ACTING....you're supposed to be able to sound different for different characters. (Granted, a lot of VAs sound similiar in their different characters...but not many just use one voice.)

when i was watching poly-matrix recently, Sutherland's voice kept on reminding me of James McCaffrey's voice role in Max Payne, that monotone voice for both actors gets rather annoying after a while. And Ross' character design kindof irked me, he was ginormous

I just bought the OVA's the other day, and they were great. The one problem was that i fell asleep (It was really late at night) while I was watching one of them... so I had to watch a couple over again. I'd say they're definately worth watching, and my friend I was watching them with agrees.
