Hetalia Axis War has got me really curious. I've checked out the manga but gosh, that had me confused and I couldn't follow what's going on. The anime sounds rather promising. I enjoy random humours and this one is the best candidate. I still don't enjoy the crappy drawing style for a character. It irritates me.

Really looking forward to getting my copy of Eden of the East, I hope it's not a disappointment after seeing so much praise for it.

Even the people on their high horse about how the show is so mean and racist know that deep down inside, they totally get it. Go to any international sporting event and you'll hear the same jokes being thrown around. These are the images that each nation projects, and if you're offended, you really need to get over it.

Totally agree with this. Maybe my Welshness comes into play a little here; the number of sheep-shagging gags I get to hear - and the number of people who seem to think they're the first one to say them to me - is just ridiculous. Laughing

I'd say Brian has pretty good taste. I'd also point out that, at least to me, it's not that small of a collection. Those slimpacks and season sets really take up a lot less space than singles (one of the things I like about them).

Meh, for me, I've gotta say that Hetalia is the type of anime that's only funny for me if I'm watching it with a bunch of other people, we've all gotten a little bit drunk, and we're totally in a mood to be racist (like Erin has said, it might be racist, but in an "I've also made those jokes" way), but I simply could not just sit down and watch more than like, three episodes by myself in one sitting (I've tried actually, more than once). Oh and I've heard the dub over on Funi's website and once again I think they have ruined a show by forcing accents into the dub. Why will they not stop this?! It's like they're starting to think that any show that has taken place in a specific era or location needs a ton of accents, I mean, wtf? It's really starting to annoy me to the point where I am losing faith in them as a dubbing company.

I also saw Eden of the East as it came out, one of the few times I saw anime during the season it came out as it came out. However, I only kept watching it because it was a short series and I had nothing better to do and not because I actually liked it. For me there's "unfolding naturally" and there's "get on with on!" type of pacing that requires that Monty Python's Holy Grail scene cut into it (except it's not actually funny here). For me, this series moved way too slow and left a lot of interesting things poorly resolved or just kinda left off so that they could talk some more about "johnnies", the only time that I have ever heard that used as slang for male reproductive organs in my entire life. Also, what was this series' obsession with "johnnies"? It was kinda starting to disturb me that they would waste dialogue that could have maybe done something on talking about dicks, it's like hearing elementary schoolers (albeit ones with abnormally good vocabulary and sentence structure) who have just learned slang having way too much fun with it. So yeah, I'm someone who would not recommend this show, it just did nothing for me.

From what I could tell, Brian's collection was pretty interesting but the thinpack spines!! I cannot read most of them!!! And I cannot zoom in enough either! Curses!

I am definitely going to get Eden of the East, I absolutely loved the show when I saw it fansubbed. It's always refreshing to see something that creative come out in any medium.

I still haven't seen the movies yet. I assume those aren't included in this set?

I think with Hetalia I will wait to pick up the manga first. I tried to watch the anime fansubbed but the sub job was really bad and I couldn't understand what was going on so I stopped. But it sounds delightfully cracktastic and possibly right up my alley so I'm looking forward to seeing more of it (and if I like the manga, I will give the anime another try, especially now that there is a professional subbing job available that hopefully won't suck).

Adding on to this powderkeg of fun is the amazing job that the English dub cast did. The crappy accents are possibly the best part. I can't tell if the accents are bad because the actors couldn't keep them going for episodes on end, or if they're bad on purpose, but I'm really hoping for the latter, because it's genius. The accents that fade in and out of recognition add to the already hilarious self-mocking aspect of the show. They're not meant to be realistic accents. These are the fake accents that we asshole Americans use to make fun of other countries, like the flamboyant Austrian and the sing-songy Italian. I almost died laughing when Italy's monologue spun off into a list of pasta types.

To be honest, I only watched maybe five minutes of the show in Japanese before switching it over to English for the rest of the disc. I'm sure it's just as funny in Japanese, but as a native English speaker, I found the dub track much easier to relate to.

Hey, I love you again! I bought the boxset for these very reasons.

marie-antoinette, was the episode you tried to watch ep. 1? If so, then I'm not surprised. That whole conference sequence is pretty hard to follow, but the show calms down a lot after that.

Nice collection, I like it to.
It was cool reading from Bamboo again, welcom back for one column!
I realy need to get Eden of the East, I understand its dubbed so I gotta check that out, I never saw Hetalia, my brother hates it, but I think it looks petty funny. And I agree with Linberal of Iron, I never cared for the anime, but I hear the manga is 10 times better (isnt it always?)

Eden of the East really is the best anime to come down the pike in quite a while, and has a little something for every viewer. I really can't see anybody disliking it. (Which is not to say that it won't have its detractors in internet-land.) Moribito and Stand Alone Complex are both amazingly good shows, but Eden is fresher and more fun. I look forward to watching it all over again with the dub track.

Question on Eden of the East: DVD or Blu-Ray?

I own neither a BluRay player nor an HDTV right now, so should I just wait a little until I do and get the BluRays so as to avoid double-dipping? Or are they sub-par and I should get the DVDs anyway?

I feel almost beholden to purchase it one way or the other, what with Funimation paying Oasis whatever the heck they asked for to use the original opening theme.

Wow, I just had to go over to Funi's website to confirm this, wow, then wtf was the point of paying for the song in the first place when they were only gonna use it for a single episode? Actually both of the dub episodes on their website don't have the Oasis song, how very useful. Guessing it's a DVD only thing, not even the sub eps on their website have the original OP. That's a shame because the OP was the only thing I liked about the show in the first place.

Wait, what, how does that work? What do they have for the other 10 episodes?? And what kind of weird deal to make is that, "you can use our song but only on the first episode," huh?
