The four recap episodes in Wolf's Rain was the result of the SARS epidemic. I thought that was pretty common knowledge.

And I guess Grace hasn't heard of Doraemon. If ever there was a show that just kept on going and going and going, and going, then that's the one.

Or people can just use other sites for visual novel reviews?

I love visual novels. But I'd rather read anime reviews on sites about anime and VN reviews on VN sites. That those reviewers aren't afraid of porn is part of it but not all.

There is a lot of anime ANN doesn't cover, so I'd rather the staff devote resources to that than review the few all-ages games in english (that tend to be reviewed a lot anyhow).

EDIT: Occasionally mentioning releases in "The X Button" would be nice though since they are videogame-ish.

Why would only visual novels get that treatment? How about not reviewing other games and light novels if that resulted in more anime reviews?

There only few all-ages visual, so there is no fear that they will take over ANN, and because there are only so few they need all the publicity they can get so that we can some quality games instead of poor sex romps. Yes, the games have been reviewed in many other sites, but how many of the people reading ANN have seen those reviews.

I don't expect ANN to review every VN in existence, I just want some publicity, because most people don't probably even know that the anime they watched is based on a game and are even less likely to know that the game has been translated.

Add Detective Conan to that list too. It's completely dumbfounding how little the main plot has advanced in that series in 14 years. Although the point about not judging a manga by it's anime series is pretty much right.

I guess I haven't watched enough anime or missing a lot of shows. Because besides the Gundam shows, I really haven't seen any that put recap shows in.

Heh heh. Maybe not the best week to use a guy asking about more Berserk as a flake. Wink

About the question of the week, would it be possible for Miura's pencil strokes to be beamed directly into my brain? That would be my ideal system. Of course, that's just Berserk.

Problem is, there just aren't really many people like this anymore. Most of the old guard, Miyazaki, Otomo, Oshii, Kawajiri, Tomino, Matsumoto, Rintaro, etc are at least semi retired. I don't know what happened with a lot of the next generation. There were a number of talented guys who came into the industry working under the old guard but they all seem to have more or less gone out with them. Like, what ever happened to Hiroyuki Kitakubo? Or Hiroyuki Okiura? I dunno.

Watanabe also hasn't done anything in ages. I dunno why. Shinaki's stuff is getting increasingly stale. Anno doesn't seem interested in branching outside of Evangelion. Kon died. Shit. It's pretty damn depressing when you lay it all out at once.

There's certainly still hope though. For starters, every person should absolutely be watching everything Kenji Kamiyama directs. The man simply exudes talent and craps awesomeness. Mamoru Hosoda is also an interesting up and comer and of course, Maasaki Yuasa still seems to be going strong.

There's some interesting indie guys out there as well like Yoshiura, Nakamura, Nakazawa, the guy who did Cencoroll who's name escapes me, etc. Unfortunately, they don't really get the opportunities to do the bigger projects yet. I'd like to see more of that.

The only visual novel I've read is the Umineko no Naku Koro ni series. And man, those are GREAT. They're completely insane. They put the mystery genre totally upside down, adding layers upon layers of overlapping realities. It's as meta as it gets.

I'm hesitant to call most visual novels a game, but Umineko is definitely the one that comes closest to being one. It's a game in the same sense that trying to figure out what was going in Lost was a game.

Oh, what will I do if I don't live long enough to read the end of this story, BEATORIIICHEEEEEEE!!

Oh thank you, I endured half an episode of that when it first appeared. It wasn't just the clutzy big-boobed "heroine" or the slash-ready male characters, it was the speed-lines in the "action" scenes.

I will fault you for saying "animes," though. Use "anime" like you would "animation," either as a noun without plural or an adjective.

Maybe I'm just naive on the level of graphicness involved in either caase, but how are some of the one-sex-scene-to-boost-sales-that-you-can-even-skip-over VNs much different from the yaoi that gets reviewed here regularly?

Hmm... I admit it's a little bit of a shame about ANN's "No Hardcore" policy, since there are a few games out there with adult content that are, in fact, truly impressive... but at the same time, I can definitely see the purpose of having that kind of policy, since ANN is a pretty major site for anime information and needs to be at least reasonably family-friendly. I agree that I'd like to see the occasional non-adult VN get reviewed in The X Button or something, though; it's not all that different from NIS' recent "Disgaea Infinite" game, after all, just generally on a different platform.

As I understand it, there's also occasionally the "non-adult" release for a Visual Novel that would otherwise be too mature for this site, but the market as it is happens to be so small that there's little point in doing it since there's almost nothing to review. In English, anyway. Hmm.

Good point. Comparing The Tyrant Falls in Love with ef ~the first tale, ef is actually the less graphic of the two. For one thing, ef doesn't outright show the male organ. Embarassed

I agree, and actually there's another reason long-runners do recaps, it's so they can let the manga get further ahead. Thankfully, the most recent Gundam series, 00, had only 1 recap episode (and the recap was only half of it, the other half was new stuff) in its first season and it actually had sort of a point to it, so hopefully future series will cut back on the recaps as well.

In terms of the "problems with anime" topic, I never cared for the whole "why won't they end them?!" argument. Really, in terms of story, have they been THAT long? I mean, imagine a full anime series adaption of Harry Potter, it would be quite the long series. Also never understood why people get upset if new characters and subplots are introduced, I mean heaven forbid if a writer want to expand on the world he or she created. I mean, if it's done abruptly, sure you can complain (hey, Goku's brother arrived! With no foreshadowing at all! Uh, aliens are involved in the story now? WTH is going on?!), but gradually and with proper set-up it's not that big a deal. It's like if something is so long some fans automatically dismiss it. I could take the opposite approach and point some anime that were too SHORT, and failed to use the full potential of the setting, characters, plot and subplots, etc. See, the argument works both ways! Wink

*this applies to more stuff like One Piece and Naruto, as opposed to Case Closed which is mainly mystery/monster-of-the-week format.
