Before the poo starts flying yet again, I recommend folks take a look at EFF's take on this bill.

This [stupid liberal or dumb conservative, circle one] measure would clearly violate my constitutionally-protected right to violate intellectual property law and would be pointless and unenforcable anyway, not to mention the future of media production is piracy so this hurts the artists who want us all to have their work for free because they don't ever care about money, and anyway even if I do pay for things it all goes to evil corporate fatcats who don't deserve to be paid for the cost of production because they are evil corporate fatcats.

Also the President is somehow involved in some negative way but I don't really know why or how.

Did I miss anything? Let's make it a fun game!

nope Very Happy

although i don't like the idea of the government censoring my internet, regardless of whether or not it only effects pirating sites.

I'm fine with any anti-piracy bills as long as it doesn't infringe my right of fair use and freedom of speech. Fans should have the freedom to express their creativity of their favorite anime series (AMVs ring into mind).

From the article
Quote:
The bill would also create two Internet blacklists. The first is a list of all the websites hit with a censorship court order from the Attorney General. The second, more worrying, blacklist is a list of domain names that the Department of Justice determines — without judicial review — are "dedicated to infringing activities." The bill only requires blocking for domains in the first list, but strongly suggests that domains on the second list should be blocked as well by providing legal immunity for Internet intermediaries and DNS operators who decide to block domains on the second blacklist as well.

Quote:
Moreover, it seems easy to get on the blacklist — the bill sets up a seemingly streamlined procedure for adding domains (including a McCarthy-like procedure of public snitching) — but in contrast, it seems difficult to get off the list, with a cumbersome process to have a blacklisted domain removed.

If this is true it sounds like the American version of the Australian internet filter. Though I really doubt it could be as bad as the article makes it out to be....

Unless politicians on both sides of the isle are really so stupid as to bring up a bill that would greatly increase the governments power over the internet and possible stifle free speech, right before an election that is stoked to the brim with "SCREW THE MAN" in one way or another coming from both sides of the isle towards both parties.....

PS I am going to watch Glenn Beck and Keith Olberman tomorrow because I bet they both will be screaming that the other's network is behind it to stifle their "TRUE NEWS COVERAGE". Followed with a rant about how everyone involved is a traitor and out to get them and you. Which will then be followed for an add for gold or some crappy green car depending on the network.

Censorship is censorship. Censorship is a violation of the First Amendment, and thus it should be unconstitutional. This has nothing to do with piracy, this has everything to do with a vague and crappy bill. I don't care if other countries use it, in the United States this is unconstitutional.

I don't see this as a case of clear censorship. The intended targets are sites that exist for no purpose other than the illegal distribution of legally protected content. It's not that you can't access the content at all, it's that you'd have to do it through legal means.

Should probably shut down the animenewsnetwork.com domain for good measure.

What does it have to do with censorship? The bill seems pretty clear to me; Shut down web site who's sole reason for existing is to give away other people's stuff for free.

Or are you going to use the "My fansub of generic Harem show #37685 is a from of creative expression there for it's morally wrong for the people who actually own it to ask that I stop giving their stuff away for free" argument?

They are that stupid.

I've long believed that if the people can't be "trusted" with a free, neutral internet, content providers will be more than happy to buy up communications and internet service companies and simply make sure that the internet is a constantly monitored and controlled place.

Once most of the networks are privately owned by these content/communications corporations, I'm sure it will be a very easy regime to set up, as we have a supreme court makeup that has a record of finding the rights of private ownership to be sacrosanct. It's been found that you have no first amendment "right" to protest, hand out petitions, or distribute information in "private" locations like a mall or shopping center. So why should you have a "right" to free speech on Time Warner's internet?

I certainly hope all of the free music and TV shows were worth turning the internet into early 90's AOL again.

ANN doesn't host pirated content, nor does it promote the act of piracy, so one would think it would be safe. Of course, there's no telling what some idiot in Washington might attempt.
