As the title suggests, I'm looking for any and all aspects of anime that lead you to become a fan of it. Personally, the art style was what lead me to become an anime lover through and through. It seemed so different and.... I don't know..... "clean" looking. It's really hard to explain. I also thoroughly enjoyed the storyline behind a lot of animes (one of my personal favorites being Kodomo no Jikan). So tell me... what are yours? As a courtesy to everyone that posts here, I'd like to encourage that everyone shows respect to one another. We all have different interests and as such, should respect everyone's opinions.

I've become a fan of anime twice, and both times anime itself wasn't a particular reason. As a child I've been watching it, because everyone have been doing it- those who haven't had a problem. It seemed interesting to me, but the times were hard for little girls with limited finances- the only way to be involved into fandom was buying a newspaper and read about works that were unavailable to me. Those newspapers and some foreign stuff that I've got by accident make my society position very high.
Later, when the Net conquered the world and some cartoons reminded my my childhood passion, but what really was interesting to me were communities of fans and all things connected with them. Of course, there wee some works that amazed me, but I was never so fascinated to admit that anime is good at all. That leaded me to the point where I'm now- hobbyist of anime as a culture aspect, watching a bit strange and old fashioned series to look for tropes, motives and chicles. |

The first encounter with anime i.e when I was a kid was transformers. I loved that these cars could suddenly become bad a@$ robots and the art style in voltron seald it for me I was in love. ofcourse I didn't know that these cartoons I liked were anime but when I saw one that looked similar I would pay atention to it and it always turned out good, case in point Pokemon, Medabots and Thunderbirds, heck I even loved Superbook.
The MAIN reason I got hooked to anime was the fact that very few of them were episodic. I just dont get the point of having a series that is episodic its like knowing no matter what happens this episode it all wont matter next week. Thats why I believe a lot of anime fans like Avatar TLAB just my opinion. Theres the over the top battles, nothn makes me go HELL YEEEAAH!! like a good spirit blast clash and super power up. The last Live Action fight to do this for me was the Matrix, Inception was cool too though. The girls, they are so cute and hot almost all of them how can I resist. The 'culture'. Moe, Tsundere and the like. The mallet space jokes, the facial expresions, the language e.t.c The depth of the characters as well. I can relate with so many characters that its scary sometimes. The 1 character I related with the most was Renton from Eureka 7. It was so shocking I could see my past and sme of my present behaviour in him. NO other medium has ever hit me like that. Yup thats about it. I love the absurdly vast range of genres too. |

The things that led me to become an anime fan evolved after seeing anime like Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z in which, over time, I watched a lot of other anime since then and my favorites in the majority are those from the 80's and 90's, anime like Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross/Do You Remember Love, Dirty Pair/Flash, Bubblegum Crisis, Gall Force, Gunbuster, Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo, Macross Plus, Gundam Wing, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, and others from those two decades because I liked the style used during that time period and I find them enjoyable to watch. I also enjoy anime like Air, Kanon, and Clannad as they're not just moe fare, they actually tell heartwarming stories involving the characters and that's what I liked about them as well as the stunning animation KyoAni did, I also loved the Full Metal Panic series due to the many elements put into the series such as high school hijinks, mecha action, and political intrigue. I really liked Kaname Chidori as she is my favorite anime tsundere. Death Note is another noteworthy title I like with the suspense element and the well written characters and the plot was great as well. So the aspects I focus on are things like story, character and plot development, designs, music, and the like.

I first got hooked on anime as kid watching Toonami. What I liked about it was the fact that the stories were so different from the rest of the kid's shows out there. Unlike most shows ,which usually fell back on the stereo-typical formats of child safe programing, Toonami showed things with real violence, darkness, stories, and characters. Anime shows like Dragon Ball Z, Gundam (Wing, 08th MS Team, 0080, ext), Yu Yu Hakusho, and Rurouni Kenshin were completely different from anything else I had seen at the time. The anime that they showed would actually tell a dramatic story with compelling characters and at least some level of depth, they even made use of actual literary elements. These shows were far more intelligent and advanced then the other cartoons out there.

I was raised watching animes and I didn't even realise that. It seems that I had and have too much time, I gotta waste it on something and that's how it became pretty much my hobby. It helps me to deal with the reality.

First off, here's my introduction to anime story.
So what lead me to become an anime fan? Since Sorcerer Hunters and Shuffle were the shows that made me an anime fan, I'd have to say the fanservice. Watching cartoons that had attractive characters, but didn't have tentacles in every hole was fun to watch. Of course I watch more than fanservice nowadays, but I'll never forget that my otaku roots are buried deep in T n' A. |

Big eyes. Little mouths.
That was the draw then and it remains the draw now. While many are despising this era of "moeblob", I'm blissfully enjoying every second of it. I couldn't care less if the series has a plot or not, just as long as cute girls show up on the screen. I should also point out my anime "habit" actually formed from collecting figures, not DVDs. Now I do both. There's something magical watching Kagami come alive in animation while looking good on my shelf. I'm probably not the only person here who has gigs of anime art saved on their PC (and you all had best make a backup of it today). |

I got into anime simply because I find the story telling a lot more interesting and deep than what I watch on TV. Don't get me wrong, there are a bunch of regular shows I enjoy watching, but many times I feel that the episodic nature of these shows take away any sort of depth and it seems that almost every show I've seen on TV almost always has the same plot. With anime, I feel that the storylines are often more unique, and due to the fact that most of these shows are under 50 episodes long, its a lot more enjoyable as it is not too dragged out.

After seeing the movie Heavy Metal I wanted more of animation that was not limited to being "for kids", seeing movies like Akira and Ghost in the Shell filled that desire.

As a kid I was intruiged with the level of action & the quality of the backgrounds in all the old series I saw on TV (& occasionaly VHS) and of course I found the stories & characters more appealing then those in LA shows, and some U.S. cartoons as well.
Now a days Its still story, characters & artstyle that get me into or turn me off of an anime. |

Hrm....being a fan since I was five, its been a little under 25 years of being a fan, and I honestly can't think of one single defining reason as to why I am an anime fan. Artstyle? Storylines? T&A? Its probably a bit of all three, plus the dark, dark seduction of watching something that makes you stand out from the pack, even if it is difficult to do that.

Good question. Most of the series I've seen I got into by coincidence. The ones I liked had a different feel to them than other shows, but I really couldn't say how. They're just... good. I figure there are other equally good ones, so I like anime.

I dunno. My first anime shows i was a lil tiny tyke. Did not think of em as anime.
Good old fashioned American toons were replaced by this gross garbage on cartoon network that you see now a days. there might be a few good ones but mainly they are garbage same with nick and disney. I think what sparked my interest in anime was magikano that was the first funny anime show I have seen. After that it all went up hill. the complex with its daily updates showed lots of anime and some of them that kept coming up and up again I would give in and try out of curiousity. Amv hell has done me services as that is how I found Azumanga, bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan *super funny show*, .... higurashi no naku kora ni. Anime has lots more fighting, Romance, Death, Reality *lala land where hero magically always pulls through can be shattered* cool robots, bright colors, some are extremely funny, the characters for most shows are pleasant to look at. Anime is like a HUGE Variety of jelly beans. All sorts of flavors and possiblities. but you sometimes can pull out a flavor you dont like. while it seems as for cartoons on the american stations (unless they changed a lot) are like harry potter jelly beans. you pray you dont get another horrid jelly bean. you pray you get one 3 of the only good jelly beans in that bag xD. Once the good jellies are gonna gotta wait til you finish your bag before you can get another bag. oh and for most anime shows the voices when in japanese sound super cool. There are exceptions but the exceptions are only a handfull. |
