Hey, i have been looking for some more good manga for a long time, but haven't been able to find any. My favorite one so far is death note. I want to try Monster. however, what im looking for is odd: something very philosophical and psycological. I want something that's deep, and that you need to think about to get; not something simple. I saw Non Genesis Evangelion and absolutely loved it. Can anyone recommend anything to me?

PS:
i dont like bleach, naruto, one piece, etc. nothing super popular to the point of being a trend

I personally have as my favorite anime Evangelion because of it's Philosophy/Psychology aspect, and as my favorite manga I have Planetes, which deals with Philosophy/Psychology themes, and is perfectly made. I believe you would enjoy this one.

I would also recommend Akira, although there are other manga's who focus more on Philosophy/Psychology Akira is a must read for every fan of the more intelligent manga.

Red Colored Elegy by Seiichi Hayashi is something I just read recently, and it was a Masterpiece. And it focuses a lot in Psychology. But it's a Garo Manga and that's too off-road for most of manga readers.

Other recommendations:

The Disappearance Diary
Ghost in the Shell
Believers (pornographic)
Keep on Vibrating (pornographic)

In the two When They Cry series, time is constantly repeating itself, and there are different arcs representing each time loop. In each arc you learn something new that can help you unlock the overall puzzle to the series, but there are also new mysteries that force you to read the previous and future arcs to fully understand the series.

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni is the first series, and it's basically about seemingly cutesy moe schoolgirls who are spoiler[actually axe-crazy and end up killing each other in brutal ways, before time repeats itself and they get to kill each other in more unique ways the next time. It's also very creepy and suspenseful. Higurashi is a lot gorier than Umineko.
]

Umineko is the second series, and it's a lot more complex and political. It's about a family of corrupt hiers who gather together to disperse the money of the dying family head. But then, just like in Higurashi, things start to go a bit crazy spoiler[and people start dying left-right-and-center. And naturally, time repeats itself in each arc, so everyone gets to die over and over again (though Umineko is a bit different from Higurashi in the fact that each arc is significantly different from the last, with new characters and different outcomes each time).]

Fullmetal Alchemist is both deep and entertaining.
But you might not like it for the sole reason it's popular. That'll take away a lot of good manga dude. And personally I'd consider Death Note to be a "trend" too.

well..TBH, not many manga are all that. Oh sure there alot that are fun to read. But most are realy average grade at best.

(also yikes @People suggesting Hentai. Shocked )

I suggest any of the following.

Black Lagoon (great action series)
Case Closed (Great Mystery Series)
Dr. Slump (Great Comedy)
or if you like Shojo Alice in the Country of hearts is a decent read.

these are all deffinantly worth at least checking out.

Oh, I was about to reccomend Psyren since it's on the darker side of the shonen spectrum. Well it IS a JUMP series, but it's no loner popular in the magazinne...(a shame it's one of the best things JUMP has produced in YEARS)

You could always follow Bokurano. Only volume 1 is out in the United States (though the series is finished in Japan) but if you're looking for crazy psychological stuff, you could do a lot worse--so long as you have the stomach for it, that is, because Bokurano is disturbing.

On the totally opposite side of the spectrum, I've heard a lot of good stuff about Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. You could try that. Akira is also a classic manga, but it's hard to find these days.

Probably would like Astral Project which has to do with... astral projection. This guy's sister suddenly dies, and he finds a CD that she was listening to, and when he listens to it, it makes him astrally project. So then he starts looking into her death, and exploring the whole astral projection thing. It's newly out of print as it was published by CMX, but you may still be able to find copies. It's rated M for nudity and I think one mild sex scene, but it's really not so bad. I read it 'cause it was highly recommended by the manga blogger Deb Aoki.

Try reading Adolf by Osamu Tezuka, and also give 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urusawa a try. YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED!

Any bookstore can order back issues for you. Amazon or RightStuf may have sales going (or not, since Vampire Knight is so popular). There are also on-line stores and discount sites, though I can't remember the names offhand.

If all else fails, try the publisher.

I got my copies at my comic shop recently- it was published fairly recently, so there's still lots of stock out tehre, so long as CMX doesn't dump it somewhere. Best to get while the getting's good!

Hiroki Endo's Eden: It's An Endless World is in many ways a reworking of many of the themes in Evangelion. It's ultra-philosophical, and couldn't be further from a trend. It's selling so poorly, it's basically almost canceled. I couldn't recommend anything more highly going from the criteria you've requested.
