Most people complain about americanizing anime but there are times when it works.

FLCL: They replaced some references to Japanese bands with american bands.

Case Closed: They changed the names but it doesn't affect story.

Any other examples?

In the Sailor Moon SuperS movie dub, the character names were still the same with the original VA's, but the story remained the same. I think...

It's network television so I don't complain since we are lucky enough to watch it without shelling out 25$ a DVD. Anyway, Americanization of anime is supposed to get people new to the anime scene to relate to the series. It's like 'Ah, I know that band!' Apparantly, few of the more hardcore fans take a fancy to this idea but we can't really do anything; other than spend our money on their unedid versions. Such edited anime is like a little taste, or a preview; if you want it more raw, then you have to buy the DVDs. It is considered extortion at its worst by some people...*lol*

I'd rather hear the Chili Peppers & RAtM and understand the bit than get lost on the original references of Yuzu, 19, Oh-sama, Watana Baby, & Kaji Hideki. I don't even think most J-rock fans have heard of those.

same Witch is why I dont mind the Lupin the 3rd dub changes.
since the original refrenences were to 70/80's japan pop culture. plus its on tv so doesnt cost me a dime beyond my cable bill.

As long as the sub track is there on the dvd im happy.

I just don't like RATM. And those changes fit because the show was set during the 90's as oposed to the late 70's. Plus lines like "Lupins as strong as Shaq!" are just jarring as hell. I want someone to prove to me that line was actually used to be a reference to 70's Japanese culture, because I have serious doubts.

To hear some Initial D fans, changing the names inherently ruins the story Rolling Eyes . Of course that's total bs, but they're entitled to thier opinions.

Changing the names, removing the original BGM for Out-of-Synch BGM courtesy of DJ Milky, etc. etc.....

I think they Americanized some of the jokes in Azumanga Daioh, which makes no sense since the original jokes were supposed to be from Japanese to "Engrish."

I didn't care too much for those, but I give them credit for trying something.

I don't think it EVER works, and the changes list above are reason enough for me NOT to buy the legal dvd and download it instead.

This topic was brought up a while back, and one item that most people seemed to agree on was Super Milk Chan - 100% Whole.

Of course, part of the reason it "works" is because ADV included in the box their americanized version and a 100% faithful adaptation. People that don't appreciate the liberties they took with 100% whole can watch the original.

Simple solution

At the bottom of the screen, AnimEigo style *-Famous Japanese rock band

More people will get into it, if it's a band they know.

I don't think so. This was the kinda attitude that ruined the Lupin dub I think. "Oh my god he talked about Regis Philbmin, I love this show!!!!!111111" Of course those changes aren't as bad, but they should probably keep it acurate for the DVD release.
