Ok so I've got what Legend of the Galactic Heroes TV show which is about 110 episodes. However, I can't find any information on it in the ANN encyclopedia, it only lists the movies and OAV's. Am I missing something? What is the relationship between the TV show and the OAVs/Movies? If someone can help me out that would be great, thanks.

Uh, a little confused with your wording, but were you looking for This? LoGH is technically an OVA, the longest one on record, because it was initially released direct to video in Japan. The 110 episode series is the main series, but it won't be listed as "TV" because it's technically not.

As for all the side stuff: there's three movies and two OVA series. Overture to a New War movie is a retelling of eps 1 and 2 (you can watch it instead of eps 1 and 2 but eps 1 and 2 are perfectly fine too) and everything else is a prequel. Most people say to watch the main 110 ep series first, I've watched it and two movies so far. I'll just take their word for it.

I see. I thought the OVA would be listed as a TV series so I got confused. Now I understand. Thanks for the help. How were the movies, worth watching?

I've only seen two of the movies.
Overture to a New World is a nice remake of the first two eps, but not totally necessary viewing. I suppose you could watch it instead of the first two episodes, but I thought the first two eps were perfectly fine too.

My Conquest is the Sea of the Stars is awesome, but only if you're already familiar with the characters so even though it's a prequel, I'd still watch it after you've finished, say, season 1. It's meant to show how Yang and Reinhard know of each other and it does a good job of that.

Most people seem to dislike Golden Wings, I've yet to see it myself, but I hear it disappoints fans.

Both of the side OVAs, A Hundred Billion Stars, A Hundred Billion Lights and Spiral Labyrinth both seem pretty well received (not quite as well received as the main series, granted, but then few things seem to be).

I'm in general agreement, though watching My Conquest is the Sea of Stars early on shouldn't be too problematic. You might not get a proper introduction to Yang and Reinhard as such but they are both put in a fairly interesting situation, which might serve as a bit of an interesting tease of things to come. It wouldn't hurt to see the movie after the first few episodes or so.

Still, I'd have to admit that Overture to a New War probably works a bit better as an independent work. Unlike the first one though, I didn't watch it until much later (not that there was much of a choice at the time).

In any event, both of the movies are a good way to get a sense of how the series works without having to make any additional commitments...but if you feel like diving straight into the main story then that's also absolutely fine.

Ok great. Thanks for the replies. I won't be able to get the movies where I am anyway so I'll have to wait, but I'm excited to start watching the series, I've heard it's great.

More than great. It's only anime in the strict sense that it's an animated series produced in Japan. Otherwise, it's mature science-fiction.

No, not in that way - I was rather referring to the fact that it doesn't use much of the enormous baggage of tropes usually associated with anime as a whole, and is just enjoyable as reading great Western science-fiction. My wording could have been better.
