It's definitely a good deal, but this offer has a whiff of desperation to me. It makes it seem like they really, really need to increase their subscriber base, preferably yesterday. Or they're just so overloaded with cash that they can just give it away. I doubt that's it.

That's called publicity. They definitely will attract new users like this... just look at the first post. Not the first time they did it either.

nah, it just looks like any other kind of promotion to me.
They might loose a bit now but I'm sure they're hoping more people sticking around in the long term. I'd recommend the yearly package over the seemingly more attractive 3 month "free" deal if you think you might continue to subscribe, (or switch to it afterwards)
12 months = $60/yr
3 months = $20 x 4 = $80/yr

Yeah, I signed up with the free deal in December and when the auto renewal notice came up (to get it you have to set up auto renewal through paypal) I didn't cancel it.
The timing for this one is slightly off though. Part of the reason I wanted to keep it going is that the Winter season wasn't done yet and I didn't want to lose first week viewings until the seaon was through. this time they started it after the season started so that won't be as much of a problem, the subscription will end right after this season ends, you'll be able to see all of the shows that end this season.... although so far, I think that's only four shows. Amazingly they are still saying they will make more announcements but it sounding more and more like they're yanking our chain.
Still, the free deal is also good to watch HQ video of their library archive without commercials.

I've been keeping the same automatically renewed "6.99 for every single month" subscription for my entire past year of CR viewing. I'm doing it wrong, aren't I?

Considering it's Crunchyroll, I can see where your coming from. Yes, Crunchyroll might have changed their way's slightly, but this looks like its done in desperation.
Besides, one could easily watch anime legally in HD in Youtube for absolutely no cost. Funimation, Bandai,Viz Media and Media Blasters have all set up accounts so its not only legal, but also free.
I'll only support licensed companies such as Funimation and Viz Media and such rather than a internet site that once supported and had illegal copies of anime on it.
