Now maybe they'll have an excuse to put out the Japanese version on R1.

No, only a rocket punch*.

*The Canadarm2 manipulator has a series of frangible bolts that can separate it, and it's attached load, in an emergency (e.g. if an arm segemnt overswings and would otherwise bring the load into contact with the station).

According to JAXA, both Noguchi and Yamazaki were fans of Yamato as children, and the space opera anime inspired both to become astronauts.

This is just so darn cool. I'm loving how this stresses the positives of anime.

Firstly, this is freakin' genius!

Secondly, way to go on the wave motion gun reference.

Yeah, it kinda makes you wonder what the current generation of dreck is inspiring the youth of Japan to do.

Well at least they are trying to get people interested in space.
I have tried to watch the NASA channel in the past, and boy if that does not put you to sleep, you have a serious sleep disorder.
Why is space so darn boring now? Back when we were racing to the moon (which people still think we never actually landed on) there was a serious interest in space. But now it just seems like it is not as important as some celebrity cheating on their significant other.

When I was growing up, Star Blazers was a favorite show of mine. That guy should have gone all out to try to look like the actual character (and the other astronaut should have dressed up like "Nova" (or whatever her name was in the Japanese version)).

This is so awesome! Like some of you have already said, using anime to get people interested in space is a good thing. I had no idea that Matsumoto was involved in the Young Astronaut Club, that is quite interesting (and not surprising). Too bad the one guy didn't get to go as Char.
