Shouldn't this award go to Bakemonogatari? It did sell more discs... or a Mecha series... I mean they sell alot don't they?

This is DVD not BD. I'm quite sure K-ON! did better in terms of DVD sales.

Now, if we could just get a K-On release here in the US...

That's because everyone wanted the Blu-Ray limited edition. SHAFT works = BD must have.
@sailorsean: Combined BD and DVD sales, Bakemonogatari trumps K-ON! by about 30,000 if I remember correctly per volume. However, like egoist said, this is dvd only, which I'm kinda surprised didn't go to Eden of the East....then again...it's KyoAni.

Given the US market for moe blob stuff, I doubt it would sell. Plus stuff with music often makes it even harder minus Nodame Cantabile since it's traditional classical music.

I would consider buying it because I like some of KyoAni's other works, but I've not heard great things about K-On.

Ugh, K-On. I watched one episode and refuse to watch anymore. I seriously can't stand characters that are air heads or too cutesy.
Even Lucky Star beats this series and that show was literally about nothing. Additionally, the series still beats K-On even without an English audio.
If any series deserves DVD of the Year, its a Shonen Jump series or mecha series. But certainly not a run of the mill moe series.

Bakemonogatari beat K-On! handily even in terms of DVD sales.
The only way K-On! comes out on top is if you add both BD and DVD sales for the six volumes released in 2009 versus the three volumes of Bakemonogatari. In that regard, K-On! has a slight edge.

It's not so much SHAFT but rather the stature of the title. K-On! and Bakemonogatari were both series that took fandom by storm, so there's a mentality that one must collect the discs as certificates of participation. They're gold collectibles, so consumers spring for the more prestigious (higher quality and more expensive) Blu-Ray SKUs.
A typical SHAFT release probably wouldn't do so well on Blu-Ray.
Producers are also learning from these examples, and they're now more conscious of the need to manipulate/generate community excitement instead of single-mindedly focusing on brand or content.

I second that on the release of K-On! in the US.
For some reason I feel that Funimation will be the one distributing it.

K-On! wasn't that great of a series, so I'm surprised that it's winning all these awards. I'm also shocked that "Eden of the East" hasn't won anything DVD-wise.

Retailers unbelievably take money over quality. The thing made money, more than they probably expected. But then again, do us a favor and read the news before commenting.

So is this award for quality or number sold? It seems Bakemono would win due to the pure amount of effort put into each of the releases with all the edits and changes.

It's a "Retailer's Choice" award, so sales quantity would undoubtedly be the deciding factor.

Bakemonogatari is obviously superior
it's the greatest anime ever made.
Pony Canyon and KyoAni must pay a lot of money to the judge to steal this award from Bakemonogatari.

K-ON: Moe-blobs
Bakemonogatari: Fetish Fuel
Greatest anime ever? That would be Martian Successor Nadesico for me.

Maybe not DVD-wise but EotE did win best TV series of the year in 2009 for the Kobe Awards....if that counts as anything
Bleh to K-ON.
In the end, it all comes down to opinion -shrug-
