I love Perfect Dark!
One of my favorite N64 games.
Oh wait, this is something different?

Well, I'm a little puzzled why they decided to write their own when Freenet already exists. In fact, I've seen one or both of these described as copies of such software with security features *removed* to make them faster.
I believe the security problem here had to do with the software for some sort of forum where people posted the availability of items. Your IP address was clearly visible there, so law enforcement had only to watch that board for new postings. They could then configure their copy of the software to receive only from that IP and clearly prove the source of the file was that one person.
Not just lame, but Gold Lamé.

Because this and freenet serve different purposes? Freenet is centred squarely on anonymity and full deniability of possession. PD is aimed for maximum throughput while maintaining the anonymity of uploaders.
I'd be interest to know whether this occurred due to a flaw in PD itself, or due to detection via some other vector (resident observation program, packet snooping, seizure of equipment, etc).

Let me be the first (on here at least) to say that Perfect Dark doesn't sound so perfect to me right now...
/never used it

Well that sucks. Its not the end of the world when there are thousands of others.
All thats going to happen is someone is going to make another program thats even better. They'll catch one or two more people and then there will just be another program.
It's a never ending cycle.

Wait, wait. Let me grab some popcorn and a glass of coke. Okay, I'm ready. Go ahead with the "Fansubs, Right or Wrong?" discussion.

You know, I don't like to get into this types of arguments, cause I'm fairly (almost totally) neutral and non-caring about the subject regarding fansubs.
But you sir, are an exception
1-(being the obvious one)...You're just a troll. All you ever do around is go about and start shit with people regarding fansubs.
2-There was practically NO REASON WHATSOEVER to bring up fansubs in this thread, considering that wasn't even an addressed issue...
3-If you want to be the epic hero of justice that you sooo want to be, then it's probably a good idea NOT to push your narrowminded views onto others. Especially when they aren't needed in places where they don't belong. What you're doing is no different than storming a buffet restaurant, and calling out the mafia for no other reason than being the mafia.
4-What exactly have you accomplished here? Certainly, the trade between fansubs hasn't stopped from your mighty and righteous roars... And there's a pretty good chance you've just pissed off a good majority of the site. Not to mention, you've pissed off normal, ordinary dudes like myself who generally don't take sides, only because of your absurdy closed-minded, and absolutely misguided sense of righteousness.
mglittlerobin, there is a time and place for everything, mate... Look up the word "appropriate" the next time you're in the mood to make a damn fool of yourself.

You might be right about the trolling, but I'll have to dispute #2 and disagree with part of #4. The suspect in this case was arrested for illegally uploading anime, so there was a reason to bring it up. Also, by your argument, you're saying that unless somebody's words have a far reaching and readily discernible effect, they shouldn't speak out about something?

I think we all knew it was going to start sometime.

Ah, I remember about a year a go, all the little deviants were singing the praises of Perfect Dark and how nothing could stop them now and not even to try because it was impenetrable. Guess those days are over now.

It's one of the many joys of technology. Somebody will always have to make something better because somebody else beat what they had. It's a cycle that repeats itself for most things, and has been around for a long time. Basically, somebody will have to make an even more anonymous system, until someone else beats that, and again and again.

I find it really disappointing that people who see news about illegal uploads jump right onto fansubs, especially when the case is in Japan <_< As far as I'm concerned, implications of fansubs is a possibility but not definite since raws are out there for more than just fansubbers.

Well, no. But, I think the context in which he posted argues my point for me - it was extremely pompous and pointless, and most of all, unprovoked.

Which causes me to worry as to exactly how they managed to crack it, and catch the guy.
I certainly hope it wasn't thanks to a major privacy encroachment...like fervently tapping the guy's phone, and monitoring his every cellular movement with some nuclear laser satelite.

I'll give you that. The context doesn't help, although I'd still say it wasn't totally pointless. But, I have a better idea of what you're saying now.
