Others have mentioned in the previous news thread how the character design looks so K-on!, and it's really obvious in the preview. Not bad, just seems a bit too close and repetitive.
They do have an impressive group of creators together. Since it's an anime original, I expect more in terms of originality.

Usually similarities like that result from having the same character designer on the show but this does not seem to be the case here. Is it okay to fake styles like that?

I wouldn't say it's character design that's similar: it's animation style.
While Yutaka Yamamoto was at KyoAni, he developed a very jerky, but expressive, animation style (watch Kannagi/K-On. Notice how the movements seem to 'jump', but there are still a lot of in-between frames at the start and end of the motion). This rubbed off on KyoAni, even after he left to direct Kannagi, and was the style seen in K-On. My guess is this style rubbed off on Toshifumi Akai while he was working on Kannagi.

I enjoyed the Kannagi style, and got to appreciate the in-betweens while making an animated gif. The detail is there, as in the hair movements. This obviously uses that same style, which is very appealing and seems to have started a trend.
But I challenge you to watch K-on! and this preview (comparing the previews is most interesting) and see much difference in the character designs. There's Tsumugi here, sans eyebrows and with lighter blonde hair) and Mio with a bit of different hairstyle. The style itself rather over-simplifies facial characteristics, but I mean, it's pretty obvious. I don't mind, as I said, but regardless of who influenced the final designs, they are virtual knock-offs from K-on!.

Also, the plot is playing music. I mean, they're not even really trying.
Post-apocalyptic K-On! for the win? I can't really pass a judgment on it, but frankly, it doesn't sound terribly promising.

And like K-On! you don't see any guys in the CM. Hopefully, that town has some men in it.
I'm a fan of K-On! so I liked the designs and animation style. Loved the music.

The difference is in this, they'll probably play music.
No, seriously, if the premise is any indication, the people who think this is going to be K-ON! redux are in for a rude awakening.

I don't expect it to be the same old moe fare. The concept of Anime no Chikara and engaging top creators, plus the fact it's an original story, certainly sounds good. There's potential for some quality there if it succeeds. Hope so, because that will validate the program, and they will do more.
