Why not? They used to steal scanlator translations anyway, and some of their old titles weren't edited or even spellchecked properly. Even scanlators are better than Tokyopop, as my volume of Paradise Kiss with a random page of Initial D in it testifies.

I'm not sure I understand what they're proposing here. By "fan translators", do they mean unpaid? Or getting people to translate on a case-by-case basis, i.e. they'll find fans of a series and hire them just to do that series?

It means that they pay people for translations, but will edit and re-word them as needed.

Well, if this means BECK will continue then yay.
Hope the quality is actual good though.
And hope all the hardcore otaku don't think they'll start getting fansubbers, subbing shows now...

But if they're paying fans for translations, then they're not really fan translations anymore, they're just hiring from an untapped pool.

And they better be careful who they pick. I mean, some groups produce very high quality releases to the point where you wonder why they don't do it for profit, but many just spit out chapters as fast as they can.

wal: You're just assuming they're paying, and not turning it into some bs "internship" thing. Laughing

During the webinar, Levy said he was curious to see if fan translators would be interested in translating work for Tokyopop. Levy said he was interested in how fan translators, professional translators, and fans would feel about that idea. He said that Tokyopop is currently talking with the partners of a scanlation website regarding this idea, to see if teaming up is a possibility. Both Levy and Diaz-Przybyl said they were curious after seeing how the streaming website Crunchyroll went from streaming fansubbed anime to a legitimate website that can charge for membership.

Am I misunderstanding something here?
Didn't Crunchyroll team up with Japanese companies and not fan translators when they removed all fansubbed content and anything else they didn't have distribution rights to? Sure, Crunchyroll transformed itself by providing a legal service to fans but unless Crunchyroll then hired some fansubbers to translate new series they had acquired rights to, I don't think Tokyopop can look at this as an applicable example... I'm just saying cause it's a little confusing to me.

Besides, other companies already do this. Viz is one I've heard that does it.

Do you have something - anything - other than hearsay or "some guy on some forum said so" to back this up?

Otherwise you're spreading misinformation.

I just read a couple of days ago that some of the subbers for CR are former fansubbers. (I don't know who did the translation/editing on Hanasakeru Seishonen at CR this last week, but whoever it was looked like a bad fansubber. I don't like paying for that.)

I don't know anything of Viz, but I'm rather certain that Tokyopop hired someone who was in a prominent scanlating group who were doing Beck.

I was talking specifically about hiring - paid or unpaid - scanlators to work on suspended or published manga by a professional studio.

I'm not asking to be confrontational or because I don't believe him - but tossing something out there like that needs to be backed up with something, some solid information, some facts. That's all I ask.

Unfortunately I can't find anything concrete, but here's what I got for the Beck translator

MangaScreener was often the subject of articles and interviews about scanlation, and some of its staff members went on to work in the manga industry. In fact, after Beck was licensed, MangaScreener translator flyingrobot went on to do the translation for Tokyopop.

According to [Manga Screener's website] Beck has been licensed by Tokyopop. The good news is that mangascreeners translator Stephen Paul will be translating the manga for TP, but the bad news is that Beck will no long be released as new by mangascreener.

And lastly, the encyclopedia entry here on ANN lists Stephen Paul as a translator for Beck (among other manga).

Update: Tokyopop is considering using scanlations only for titles that are on hiatus due to low sales.

Oh, they're talking about scanlations.

Oh, they're talking about charging for scanlations.

Maybe the idea of paying for what has been free just offends my selfish conceits, but I don't like the idea.
