Yup, pretty much what the above poster said. Craft pumpkins are a lot easier to carve, so it gives people an unfair advantage.
By the way, more prizes have been added!

I tried to send in my first entry, and got this message:
"This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification
Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
halloween @ animenewsnetwork . com
Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 5.1.1 <halloween>... User unknown (state 14)."
Did I do something wrong?
#I added the spaces back for crawlers sake.#

I'm looking forward to seeing the entries. I'm always impressed at what people can pull of with a pumpkin.

I think this makes a good point, not only for the craft pumpkins but also for marker use. I think people argue all the time that there is a big difference between a pumpkin "carving" contest and a "decoration" contest. I understand you aren't allowing paints and marker only submissions, although, if you outlaw craft pumpkins because they are much easier to carve, I think the exact same thing would apply to using markers to affect the contrast. It also gives an unfair advantage.
I mean, is it not true that creating the right contrast with a marker would be much much easier than doing it with a knife?

I disagree, for a couple reasons. It's really only possible to draw on unscraped pumpkin skin, so you can't just scrawl on bare pumpkin flesh with a Sharpie. Also, if someone does, we can pretty much tell from the daytime photo, and we'll note it accordingly. And honestly, Sharpie on uncarved pumpkin really doesn't make a huge difference.
The only thing that marker is really useful for is taking long-exposure nighttime shots.

Yes I understand how its used for contrast and maybe this is just my opinion but I would think that preventing your dark values from being overexposed should be a challenge of the carving process and not just a marker touch-up. I think its a ten minute substitute for 2 hours of work. That's basically my point and I won't keep arguing it if you disagree. Thanks for addressing the question instead of making pointless baiting comments.

Yeah, I've never had a photo actually represent what I see with my eyes. I try to use paper inside the pumpkin to shield the light.

Ah! My pumpkin has been sitting across the room from me waiting for this to be posted. Time to break out the tools.

I've got an idea I think I can pull off. Even if it doesn't turn out, I'll submit it in hopes that people will witness my atrocity.

Got mine tonight and I'm now ready to carve the winning pumpkin tomorrow. I need to awaken my inner artist that's been hibernating for a couple years.
