Strange... I always figured live-action anime movies(the ones made in japan only) were treated like how we treat comic book movies. (ie. big budget bombs, not being faithful to the original idea, etc, etc) But some of those movies are getting nominated for things? Thats odd imo...

and I always wonder what would be the US answer to the gundam model?

Well, some of them ARE pretty bad, but just as manga is more accepted in Japan than comic books are in America, manga-based movies are more accepted. 20th Century Boys is one of the biggest movie productions in recent memory.
