For the record, the sisters are 13 and 14. So the next time you're watching Izumi's breasts bobble around and you reach for a tissue, think about your kid sister.

I think that's the best thing to tell guys who watch the perverted fanservice shows. If they actually have a little sister it's even better!

Not if they have an incest fetish.

Okay, I wasn't going to comment on the HIMM thing but I know I won't be able to rest until I do. First, I want to make clear that I have absolutely no interest in this show or any show like it. However, it bothers me that it automatically assumed that people who like this sort of thing are pedophiles in training.

Bamboo has every right to hate this show but it's not nice to insult people who do like it. Why assume that people that like erotic fiction (especially the more questionable type) are going to go out and do it? But people who like extreme violence get a pass? No one says, "Watch out for that guy! He likes Fist of the North Star; he might punch your face in till it explodes!" Yes, it's true some pedos might watch stuff like HIMM but they also watch REAL child porn because cartoon kids just don't look realistic enough and they don't always act like real children. So next time you see an 14 year old loli, think about the fact that she's an animated drawing with no actual, biological age and no one's kid sister looks like that!

I can't stand my kid sister with a passion. I think I might actually enjoy HiMM.

I blind bought He is my Master because it was under $2 an episode, if I hate it, I am not out much.

I am surprised at the turnaround on Kenichi given the perishable and quite scathing review the first set received. All the same objections mentioned in the first are still present to some degree, (form fitting breast isolating leotards). Still I found it a lot of fun, sure there is fanservice, but I enjoy the characters and their interactions

My main gripe is that to my knowledge, the next 26 (maybe 24 not sure) have not been licensed or announced. 50+ episode series are not bought until I KNOW it is all coming out. You can thank Full Moon for that, and it is why I am not getting too excited about the Nana release (totally blind so far, but LOVE the first two discs via rental).
I might be wrong about Kenichi, I think I raised this point before and was informed that I missed an announcement.

Wait, you're not suggesting we should let facts interfere with our assumptive preconceptions based on cultural and religious bias and unsupported authority are you? You wouldn't!

Haven't you seen the statistics on the spiraling increase in pedophilia arrests and convictions as a result of the recent 10-year massive spike in anime and manga popularity in the U.S. and aided by the Orwellian monitoring and investigation techniques enabled by the Internet? Of course you have. Don't be silly.

Hmm interesting reviews. Quite a different opinion of "He is my Master" here then on the main review. Still I'll be buying it one day, since I love all things Gainax. But now I won't have my hopes too high.

And I found it interesting the shelves featured this week have four animes almost in a row that I own (and love) and no one else ever seems to talk about (Master Keaton, The Ping Pong Club, To Heart, and Yawara). Nice tastes! (Also random Human Crossing DVD's in Moribito Box. Cool. I thought that show was pretty good too.)

Yeah, I was bugged by that cheap shot too, but when it's a Bamboo review you have to expect a certain amount of kneejerk PC crap. You could take that reductive approach to a lot of anime if you wanted to. Ewww, a high school girl molests a younger boy in FLCL...think about your younger brother next time you watch that pedo filth! Comment removed as it's OT, inflammatory, and a direct insult towards Bamboo that is not relevant to this discussion.

[Mod Edit: I find it funny you are bugged by a "cheap shot" when you turn around and fire off a cheap shot of your own that easily dwarfs the one that bothered you in scope. You want to disagree with her opinion and statement then do so, but such disagreements do not give you grounds to then insult her and her work here. The comment was irrelevant and nothing but inflammatory, and personal flaming and trolling isn't going to be tolerated. Consider yourself warned, there won't be another. - Keonyn]

And you are such the bastion of intelligence and wit yourself right? As for her review Bamboo didn't insult the fans of the show so you both should learn to read more closely. She clearly said, "this show is beloved by hordes of anime fans, all of whom will defend this series to its grave, and will also pile into our forums to tell me that I kick puppies." So far you 2 have proven her exactly right. Even with that she doesn't insult fans of the show, just predicts the responses she will get and as it turns out she was spot on. You 2 should take a chill pill.

That aside, He is My Master is a series that I could never bring myself to pick up in printed or animated form, based on title alone. Bamboo's review confirms my expectations of it.

Probably a good choice then. From previewing it back on TAN's Labor Day free-fer-all, it (the first few episodes at least) did seem to keep with the manga (at least in spirit.) Not thrilled by the remarks about a trash ending, but I guess that could still be considered better than the indefinite hiatus the manga is on.

Really? As soon as I saw it on the list I was just wondering how much she'd savage it.

Yeah... seeing that icon up as the headliner for this week just caused a wince, and an understanding that there would almost certainly be an agreement to disagree.

Probably because at least half of my anime DVDs are rare and out of print with no optimal (H.264 video, AAC3 audio, softsubbed, no group "logo" added) DVD rips in existence.
And in the case of Ping Pong Club the only DVD rips around have the hilarious OP/ED cut-out...

I guess you missed the editorial's 'jokes' that basically paint any male over the age of 18 that dares enjoy the show's fanservice as a misogynistic creep? Yes, I think Izumi is cute and that she has nice... tracts of land, but that doesn't mean I'm some horrible child molester.

Mind, I'm not actually offended, I just find it silly. I've only read a little of the manga and found it to be okay, and I've been on the fence about buying the anime. Bamboo Dong's words have done nothing to sway me away from it, and I think I might actually buy it just to see if it's all as bad as she makes it sound. It's certainly cheap enough to take the risk.

I remember liking what I read well enough, it has a really cruel sense of humor and the male lead being a complete unapologetic perverted bastard was refreshing. I also greatly enjoyed Mitsuki's manipulation of everyone around her. Almost everyone in the show was either a pervert, a loony, or a complete jerk and I found it hysterical. I did feel a little for Izumi, one of the only half-decent people in the series, even if she did bring the whole situation on herself, but it never stuck me as all that tasteless. Maybe the anime upped the ante a bit? I remember Yoshitaka being almost universally hated because he was a complete creep, so it's not like he always got away with everything.

I watched all of He is My Master a while back and it made me laugh. And Pocchi (the gator) was quite funny because he turned out to be a perv too, despite being drawn so toonishly X3

Interpreting the review as "basically paintning any male etc....." is not the same as actually insulting people. There is a difference. She doesn't insult anyone directly and if people took her comments to infer what you said then that is their assumption. I notice people just jumping to conclusions and criticizing her but no one actually asking if that's what she meant or not. So much easier to just "knee jerk" and attack the reviewer isn't it? That wasn't directed at you btw.

While I'd rank He is My Master as one of my favorite anime, and I do disagree with parts of the review, I'd say it was a pretty good review. I like to read Bamboo's reviews, especially when she completely digs into a show like she did with HiMM.

It's a little odd liking a review that spreads so much hate upon something that I love, but it's easy to target the reviewer and say bad things about the review itself just because you didn't agree with it. I thought it was well written, and conveyed the facts about the show.

And, honestly, while some things were clearly exaggerated to add humor to the column, I don't see how she was painting the viewers in any specific light. It's all for the lulz. People taking it seriously on either side need the chillax a bit.

Plus, I recommend checking out the review on this site that Theron Martin did before making any decisions based on Bamboo's review. It might not be as funny, but it's a little more fair in the judgement IMHO. (Of course, I'm biased. But it is nice to get more than one reviewers opinion.)
