What CLAMP manga is the best? I would like to get one, but I don't know which to chose. And I'm not a huge fan of Chobits, so I was wondering if it gets better after the first volume. Thanks for you input! Very Happy
Also is Tsubasa good for a first CLAMP manga? It really interests me and I think it's neat how it's a crossover.

I would say that Card Captor Sakura is the greatest work by CLAMP. Although you might find it too cutesy, it actually has its own maturity later on in the series. The characters, action, plot, and romance has a perfect balance.

If you find CCS too immature for your tastes, you could always finish up Chobits. Mostly sexual is included with this one, so be aware of that if you are sensitive to that kind of content.

I think that you would appreciate Tsubasa after you already know the characters that are in it.

The first CLAMP maga that I collected was Angelic Layer, but you could also start out with:

Clover
Wish
Magic Knights Rayearth

All are excellent starters

I have a quick question, do you have to have read other CLAMP mangas to fully appreciate xxxHolic (like Tsubasa) or is it pretty self-contained?

xxxHolic is self-contained. It is also fast becoming one of my new favorite series.

Another good choice.

This only applies to Tsubasa, and only kind of. It means more to the fan if they've read some of their other series, but it's not like you're not going to follow what's going on.

Personally I find either Chobits or Tokyo Babylon to be their best stuff. I haven't read too much of Tokyo Babylon but what I've read impresses me to no end. And then... no one can say no to Chobits Anime smallmouth

I recommend Wish. The story is cute and sweet.

I was not much of a fan of Chobits either. I read til the end hoping for a decent conclusion but was disappointed. I do like Wish though. Magic Knight Rayearth is good too. I had a friend that complained bitterly about the translation though. He said it was dumbed down. Shirahime-Syo is awesome.

CLAMP has become boring to some of my friends. Nobody I know has bought Suki, Tsubasa, or xxxholic.

Wow... where have all the X fans gone? Shocked

CCS is probably tied with X as one of their most popular works, and both are about as opposite as you can get from each other. CCS is done, was adorable, and cute. X they've been working on for over 10 years, and is still going on. I think of it as their most complex, detailed, and most gorgeous work. Also their darkest. So of course I'm suggesting X. CCS is a must though if you can stand cute things. X... don't get if you're really squiemish, don't like drama, and don't like lots of people dying who you'll probably get really attached to.

RG Veda will actually be coming out soon by TokyoPop. The first volume has no release date yet, so I'm not sure aout when it will come out. I predict soon though. It's been a while.

What a shame. I think Suki and XXXholic are highly enjoyable.

For a "starter" CLAMP series I'd also go with Magic Knight Rayearth or Clover.

Definetily. I love Wish.

However, I am strangely drawn to both CCS and X. I can't stop reading either, no matter how different they are. Tsubasa isn't my favorite, but it's good too.

For a starter Clamp title, I would go with Magic Knight Rayearth. It may not be my absolute fave Clamp title (although I rate it very high), but its classic Clamp and I love the artwork. I'm very partial to their earlier extremely detailed and screentone-heavy artwork, which is more attractive to me than some of their later work Anime smile . X/1999 is also very beautiful, but it might take a few volumes to get into the story since it is so slowly paced. In contrast, Rayearth is fiished after 6 volumes. It's your basic fantasy rpg-like story outline with 3 girls that become saviors of a magical world, but the surprising plot twists that occur in volumes 3 and 6 make the series anything but a run-of-the mill manga. Clamp's works are all over the manga spectrum, but I think this is one series that a lot of different manga-fans would enjoy.
