I was hoping for a television series, but it's looking more and more like an OVA. I won't complain, though. Gotta love more Gundam no matter what format it comes in.

Just his hair blown up by the wind (or something)... Not an afro.

I suppose this is mainly for PR purposes, but hopefully there's some truth to it and the author is still fairly pleased with the adaptation's development.
The increasingly likely possibility of Gundam Unicorn being an OVA should be for the best, considering it should allow for better animation quality and more creative freedom. The wait between episodes might bother some, but I think it's too soon for another TV series.

The interesting thing is that Fukui is much more of a mainstream author than someone people associate with the anime/manga world. Some of his novels have become live-action military/SF thrillers, like "Lorelei" and "Boukoku no Aegis." Let's hope that his "outsider's perspective" is just what UC Gundam needs.
I've read just the first couple paragraphs of UC Gundam, and liked what I saw: (super-mild spoiler) A huge, public New Year's celebration/countdown taking place as the AD calendar is scrapped in favor of the UC calendar...the crowds cheering wildly as the announcer cries "Goodbye AD, hello UC!"
Oh, the bitter, bitter irony, if you know what the first century UC has in store for humanity...

This leads me to believe one of two things will happen
Either an (1 of 5) OVA will be released worldwide on DVD sometime early next year or There will be a 5 (1 hour) episode miniseries airing on t.v. and the web over the course of the next 6-8 months.

OVA is always better, more freedom, more budget, as much time as they need to make it FINISHED PRODUCT, not this ugly BUY THE DVDS anime we get these days because the TV version was terribly drawn. I'm downright thankful it looks like it'll be an OVA series.

I much prefer OVAs for UC material as well. Their typically short running times allow for the same long-term conflict to be depicted from quite a variety of points-of-view, without having to dwell on a small subset of characters for too long.
If nothing else, I can be satisfied that I won't need to switch universes to see how Gundam titles fare in this day and age.

I'm getting more and more excited about this. Another UC OVA, at this day and age? Based on novels? Or is the hour a special to kick off a series? Either way, more UC sounds like fun.
I can hardly wait to see the Sinanju in action.

Its good that Fukui is actually participating in the animated version. This is starting to look better and better. I'm always up for more UC universe "supplemental material."

He may be a mainstream writer, but I'd say he's certainly no "outsider"... He happens to be very knowledgeable of the Gundam franchise and is personally friendly with creator Yoshiyuki Tomino such that he was handpicked by him to write the novel adaptation for Turn A Gundam.
Actually, his knowledge of Gundam even made Unicorn feel a bit fan-fictionish at times due to the amount of references and similar themes to the UC Gundams, but he can nevertheless tell a good story, which is most important IMO.

For being a "mainstream author", if you ask most people from Japan about him, they'll have absolutely no idea who he is. And just so people know, the way he wrote Gundam Unicorn is a huge derivation from his original form of writing. It's almost as if he dumbed it down a couple notches, because his other works are rather difficult to read.

- What I meant by "mainstream" is that aside from the Gundam stuff, Japanese bookstores stock his novels with the books for general readers; not in the light novel/artbook/manga ghetto. Which means he is not writing for that particular market, but for general readers most of the time.
Also, some of his more successful books have been made into high-profile live-action movies. The original article mentioned a few projects from "our world" that he's been involved with (which were news to me), and I was just trying to offer a bit more nuanced perspective on where he's situated in Japanese popular culture.
- Most authors who write in "the mainstream" are unknown to the majority of the population. They have their cliques and fans, but you don't have to have Haruki Murakami or Cormac McCarthy name recognition to be in the mainstream. Certainly more people know Fukui's name from "Lorelei" than from "Gundam" novels.
