EDIT: Please use this link to go directly to the voting.
With the last tournament now in the bag for a week now, it's time to decide on what we will do next. For those who have not been with us for the long haul, we have done six of these in the past. We will not consider these ideas or anything very similar to them: *Most Moe *Craziest Character *Best Villain *Best Duo *Most Intelligent *Best Hero/Heroine When we were deciding on the last tournament, I stated that I strongly wanted to see one particular idea done next, and there seemed to be a fair amount of support for it. That proposal is detailed below. If you would really rather do something else then put another proposal on the table. Later this week I'll put the top 3-4 ideas up for a vote (or just declare what the next one will be if there seems to be overwhelming support for one particular idea). When proposing another idea, please keep in mind the following qualifiers: *These are bracketed 1-1 single elim tournaments and that will not change. *Any proposed idea must be broad enough to cut across a wide swath of genres. Ideas too restrictive to a small number of particular genre(s) (such as Best Mecha) will be rejected outright. *Any proposed idea must be able to be evaluated on some criteria other than just pure popularity. (Discussion is half the fun of these tournaments, after all!) *Since this is the anime forum, only anime-centric ideas are acceptable. Now for my proposal: Best Team/Organization: The exact judging criteria would need to be determined (cohesiveness? effectiveness/entertainment value as a unit?), but eligibility for participation would depend on meeting the following criteria: 1) Must have an officially-recognized name. 2) Must have a definite organizational structure (i.e. there’s a recognized leader and/or everyone has assigned roles). 3) Must have a roster which consistently numbers 3+ named members. 4) Cannot be a large-scale political or military entity. Small subdivisions of such entities - such as GITS’ Section 9 or Pumpkin Scissors’s title military section - are acceptable, however. (More problematic cases, like whether Bleach's 13 Court Guard Squads would count individually or as a whole, would have to be discussed.) These restrictions are designed to prevent “teams” nominated purely on the basis of being love triangles, informal gatherings, or families. I am leery about school clubs but won’t ban them because there are some obvious great possibilities, such as the Ouran High School Host Club, Genshiken, and the SOS Brigade. However, those may be scrutinized much more closely. Also, note that there is no restriction against villainous organizations being included. I voted that for the team option at the beginning of the hero tournament (I think) and I'm still up for that idea. I also still think that a tournament revolving around Badassery would be fun. I'm going to go dig out our ideas on badassery from the old thread...
Discalimer: I fixed up what I wrote originally a bit. I want to talk briefly about Key's point that this tournament would be a little narrow in genera. I think a good debater might be able to make a few good cases in some of the non action oriented ones. Maybe you want to make a case about Urara boldly taking steps to seduce Touma in Sakura Diaries even though she is actually pretty innocent. Or... Actually that does it for my collection. Almost all of my anime has a typical badass character. Last edited by DerekTheRed on Sun Aug 16, 2009 10:59 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Yeah, I think a Best Team/Organisation would be okay, but how are we going to assess them? What do we mean by "best"? Is it the team that is most effective at what they do within the context of the Anime (in other words getting things done)? Is it the team that best supports the main purpose of the Anime (i.e. a comedic team which makes us laugh, a villainous organisation that makes for a great foil to the heroes)? Or is it some other criteria. You've already raised those questions, but I do believe it is important to have some sort of framework up, as various criterion will benefit some teams more than others. I do think this is a much more subjective topic than we've had in the past. I'm not saying it's bad, just that it needs some work done, as we're shooting in the dark here.
I myself can't think of a better topic; Best Hero/Heroine was my one. We could possibly do Best Badass, but I wonder how able it will be to cover genres other than the action. Hey wait, I may have one. What about Most Effective Senior Character? "Senior" as in over, say, fifty, or any character who has physical aspects of being that old (grey hair, wrinkled skin, yadda yadda), and probably limited to recurring characters. I'm thinking Shaman Torogai from Seirei no Moribito. I think they deserve some recognition, as well as to be celebrated. Their wisdom and ability to often see the bigger picture have helped out many a protagonist. And following on from that, what about Best Mentor? This could cover a whole host of genres, it could turn the spotlight on the minor characters who nonetheless played an important part to develop the protagonists, whether they be starring in an action show or a sports show, or even a drama/romance (a mentor who helps out the protagonist regarding issues of love). Just throwing them out there. Let me know what you think. Last edited by dtm42 on Sun Aug 16, 2009 10:41 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I'm with DerekTheRed, the last tourney really made me question if some of the contestants would have done better in a Biggest Badass tourney as oppose to a heroic tourney.
Sudden nighttime ideas abounded in my dorm last semester apparently, I still support Best Team/Organization. Let me go check my anime, games, and manga shelves for more ideas.... Best Transportation, this can range from the Outlaw Star to a really awesome horse, or even Kintaro Oe's awesome bike in Golden Boy. Obviously, this is likely to be highly subjectable to favoritsm, but both good and bad guys have awesome rides. Coolest Old Guy, quite a few anime seem to have an awesome old guy in them. However, I'd really want Uncle Iroh in on this idea. -heh, while previewing this, looks like dtm42 suggested pretty much the same thing Character who's life sucks the most, like everything just deus ex machinas against them. I've noticed these characters go good and bad, sometimes we get a Rock Holmes (Metropolis) and sometimes we get a Marin (Brigadoon). |

Well, Biggest Badass has been thrown about for the last few tournaments and has lost in the final voting but let's throw that one into the ring.
Best Team/Organization would be interesting but I think a bit difficult. How would you compare Ouran High School Host Club to Team Rocket? Or The Inner Senshi to...Kurtz Weber/Sousuke/Melissa Mao? (Sorry, I drew a blank as to the official team name) I just think overall comparing them would be a bit difficult.
Hey, Make it Old Guy/Lady! There are a few old ladies that I think are pretty good and wouldn't want to tangle with them either - Zenobia of Sprinited Away is one that comes to mind![/spoiler] Last edited by LydiaDianne on Sun Aug 16, 2009 10:44 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I think this issue has been present in all the tournaments (least the last two, only ones I've been in on), simply because people's definitions of "intelligent" and "heroic" differed from person to person and however the word "success" is defined is sure to differ too. Maybe it should be Most Successful Team/Organization instead? Just to be clearer if success of the team/organization is what we're going for?
Aww, don't feel bad, I meant elderly men and women, but where I come from, I tend to use the term "guys" to be neutral. But of course, there are plenty of badass grandpas and badass grandmas. Oo! I know! I should go check TVTropes and be back! Man, I love that site, it seems very useful for idea storming. Last edited by zawa113 on Sun Aug 16, 2009 10:49 pm; edited 1 time in total |

My proposal is "Funniest Character". I don't know if there's been anything like that before but since I didn't notice it on your list. It's quite a simple topic and I'm sure everyone could have their fun voting for it.

I eagerly anticipate the day we have a Badassery tournament. Oh, the fanfic that would produce...
Qualifiers? 1. How much ass he/she kicks 2. How stylishly he/she does it Pretty basic, right? ![]() |

Most Naive perhaps (although the most naive character I can think of is a manga only character that just was left out of the anime, not that there's plenty of other naive characters). Terms "thick" and "dense" also apply
Best anti-Hero, perhaps too soon after best pure-intentioned hero, but still, throwing it out there. Debate here is wether or not it's different enough from best villain. Best non-human character was somewhere floating around as ideas a while ago. Bossiest character aka, biggest control freak Best weapons expert, could be swords, guns, fists, who has the most skill. Kinda falls under biggest badass though. |

The reason Biggest Badass keeps getting beat out in voting is because, as much as it is a popular idea with some (and, admittedly, I kinda like it, too), it is one of the most genre-specific of the ideas which actually made it to the voting stage. Doing it would cut out anyone who isn't a fan of action-oriented series and entirely eliminate many genres from involvement. Also, while it does take a different slant, I think it's a little too close to Best Hero/Heroine to do it back-to-back.
Concerning other ideas, I seriously question whether or not we could even come up with a legit field of 64 (much less 128) for an Best Anti-Hero approach. True anti-heroes are actually uncommon (at best) in anime. Funniest Character is a little too close to Craziest Character. IzanaginoOkami, none of your suggestions actually focus on characters, so those wouldn't be viable here. Concerning the Best Team/Organization and how to define its evaluating criteria, I like dtm42's idea of making furthering the title's mood/tone/focus (i.e. is the team good for laughs in a comedy series, etc.) one of the key criteria. Others could include sense of group identity, cohesion, effectiveness, entertainment value, and influence. (A team/organization iconic enough to have been much-copied should certainly deserve some credit for that.) |

I like it. Simple, fairly unambiguous, and would provide us with some great clips to watch. The tournament could be treated as a big comedy recommendation thread, which isn't a bad thing. What is a worry is that there might not be as much room for debate as with other suggestions, as comedic moments can be very subjective. One person may find a guy walking in on a girl who is in the shower/bath/hot springs hilarious, where as another person might just roll their eyes and grimace. Other series have very dry humour that won't split your sides, but they might be more "intellectually' funny, if you catch my meaning (hey, even I have trouble understanding what I just wrote). That said, I still like the general idea of a Funniest Character tournament. You just need to be mindful of the potential pitfalls. |

I like the idea of Best Team/Organization, but I would like an informal gathering, a team of friends that have to cooperate and fight against something, to be included in the tournament, for example: the team from Higurashi or the team from Slayers.
My proposition The Best Rivals. Last edited by Aylinn on Mon Aug 17, 2009 7:48 am; edited 1 time in total |

I'm in support of Biggest Badass and Best Team/ Organization for the next tourney.
Proposal for a Tourney: Luckiest Anime Character Any character who has been shown to always have things go his way in a title or is able to miraculously survive throughout the entire series despite not being as skilled in battle as the other characters and having a high death rate shown throughout his/ her title, which is shown in some instances to result from plot elements that are deus ex machina or just because they are some form of comic relief. |

Throwing in my support for Best Team/Organization, Best Rivals and Coolest Old Guy. I might actually get around to voting this time, the last tournament had way too many shows I hadn't seen.
Biggest Badass would be cool too, but kind of pointless since we all know that Guts would win anyway ![]() |
