Cool, glad to hear a good review for both Clannad and Romeo x Juliet. I enjoyed both series immensely. I get the feeling we'll be hearing a lot of good reviews for RxJ, due in large part to Juliet being one of the most bon-diggety heroines we've seen in quite a while.

Quote: | am a huge fan of mech anime. Huge fan. I love the mechanical designs, the whiny pilots, the punching, and the swooooshing. But it makes me feel so betrayed when I feel like someone is abusing my love of robots, and is attempting to sneak a pretty, shiny show in front of my eyes. I feel used. |
My thoughts exactly. The artwork and design Gad Guard were so good at the time that I was almost willing to shell out the $90+ to buy the original boxset. Thank god I was burned earlier by a few ADV series that were less then impressive so I grabbed a torrent to wade through it and I'm glad to say I saved that money. The story was pretty blah and didn't really go anywhere in the end. Heck, now that think about it the show probably didn't need the freaking robots or lost tech at all since they only really existed so characters could fight each other with or give then something to cry about. They could have had the same series with the same moments, minus all the robots.
It's kind of like the opposite of FLCL with Canti in terms of effect and the results of the show. FLCL was just so good that you could throw something ridiculous like a robot popping out of some kids head and it would be fine and actually effect the story a bit and its personality and make it that much better. Gad Guard was just so bad that even throwing in the Robots wouldn't do anything. The ending was just... wtf? That's how it ends? I'm all for buying the legit copies once they get out but damn. I am so glad I had bittorrents to look through first.
And Damn, those are some sexy shelves.

Romeo x Juliet sounds interesting. I've heard mostly bad things about the series though, so i'll at least wait for the Anime on DVD review and part 2 collection review before deciding if i'll try it out.
I hope Clannad After Story will be licensed soon, as that is definitely where Clannad starts to really shine. It's a pity the US release thusfar isn't getting any mentionable extras. Makes me happy I purchased the Japanese LE DVDs though, as they include some nice stuff.

I actually thought Gad Guard achieved some value in being astonishingly laid back for an action series. Everybody finds robots...and then doesn't really do all that much with them. In one episode, the main character accepts a misison from a terrified man on the run from the mob to deliver a package to his lover...only to discover before the episode is half over that she's run away and there's nothing he can do to keep his promise. He spends the rest of the episode wandering around and thinking. No robots get punched.
If it had kept with that strangely cool vibe and apparent lack of regard for genre, it might have been a worthy oddball, but then it suddenly tried to pull some actual action-drama out of nowhere. I gave up on it shortly after that.
It did have a good soundtrack, though. Lots of cool jazz.

To date, Gad Guard is the only series I just couldn't finish. I got as far as the second volume and just didn't care anymore. I hated the concept of the pilots (not sure pilots is the right word here, more like just hangers-on.) riding on the shoulder of the Gad when it was doing battle, or anything. Even in fantasy that just doesn't work.

I guess one of the rare few that actually enjoyed Gad Guard. I really like the music in the series. Overall, I give the series a C.

I got Gad Guard during the last FUNi RightStuf sale, but haven't watched it yet. I'm keeping optimistic about it, while some hated it, I've talked to others who liked it. It also seems the last 3 episodes are rather unconventional from what I've heard.
Clannad may be the first of the "moe" (I know that's not the proper term to describe these shows, but whatever) shows I try, it's either that or Kanon I start with. Guess it depends on whenever I don't have anything else I want to buy at the time and whichever one is on sale.
R x J will wait until the complete collection comes out, since that means the Part 1/2 sets will probably hit the Bargain Bin (I've noticed FUNi's "complete" sets' covers are poor-looking compared to the half-season sets generally).
Also, great shelves this week, really nice-looking.

Woot my shelves! Had to make a new account (old one was tied to an email I don't have any more and I forgot my password).
Going to start Romeo x Juliet as soon as I finish off the 2nd set of Heroic Age.
Clannad is great stuff looking forward to After Story.
Never finished Gad Guard, something about it didn't click with me.

Really need to pick up RxJ, I think that was actually the first series I ever watched with fansubs and I never got around to seeing the last episode. I guess I already know what happens but I just want to see it all again! And the box set art is fairly pretty as well~

I'm glad I finally found out about Romeo X Juliet. I wasn't sure what it would be like at all. Also, yes Gad Guard could have been left alone. Either not rescued or not re-released if it was part of a deal. I'm still amazed that it was picked up and not R.O.D the TV. Seeing as how Gad Guard, Gungrave, and R.O.D were all on G4 as part of a new batch a anime and Funimation picked up the first two it doesn't make sense to leave it. Unless Geneon held the rights for whatever reason it should have been picked up since it was the best of the three.

I think one of the reasons I am so not interested in Romeo and Juliet is I have just seen so many different reincarnations of the same story so many times. From Broadway plays, Hollywood movies, novels, re-envisioned, re-told, modified, updated, modernized, not to mention all of the straight up classical versions that have floated about. I am just sick of the story. Seriously.
I am sure it is a fine anime and all, it will just be very difficult for me to press play on this one.

I actually enjoyed Gad Guard quite a bit. But mostly I think I was just so in love with the art style to let the flaws bother me. If there's ever a figure of Lightning or Zero released, I would buy it in a heartbeat. There actually wasn't all that much action, which I really wanted more of. My biggest problem was how the story didn't really have a direction until the last few episodes, and by that time it was too late and just felt weak. If nothing else, I'll always cherish it for introducing me to one of my favorite bands of all time: Pe'z. Who could ask for a better soundtrack?

I preordered Romeo X Juliet but I'm still waiting for it. GAH! What a pain. I liked that series while it was fansubbed and have waited a long time for the DVDs. I hate waiting.

I'd like to add another positive review for Romeo x Juliet. Besides all the visual niceties already mentioned by Bamboo, I enjoyed the dubbing of it. The Shakespearean touch with the dialogue was fun add to the show.
The only downside was the cliffhanger Part 1 ended on. Now it's a waiting game for the next one!
