I just finished watching Sword of the Stranger, and I have to say it totally blew me away. From the soundtrack to the hand drawn landscapes , everything about this movie was top notch. It has been a long time since I have seen an anime movie this good. Anyways my question is:

spoiler[Does Nanashi (No Name) die at the very end of the movie? At first I didn't read too much into it, but when I rewatched the ending, the last about 15 seconds or so I happened to see that it shows a trail of blood as the no named warrior, Kotaro, and the dog ride into the sunrise. It normally wouldn't have caught my attention, but it almost seems like the director wanted to make a point that the no named warrior dies. I thought he was trying to give us some hints because the very last time you see the warrior he closes his eyes and then it shows the trail of blood. ]
I was just wondering if I was reading to much into this or if it is one of those "leave it up to you own interpretation" type endings. Which I hate btw because to me if feels like they are taking the easy way out when the director does that. So does anyone else have any thoughts on how they interpreted the ending?

I'd actually never given it much thought until I read your post, that is an interesting question though.

spoiler[I always assumed that Nanashi lives, despite the blood. I just feel that the relationship he forged with Kotaro was enough to warrant him surviving the movie, not to mention how he changed as a person. Having him die at the end doesn't seem justified for me. ]

That's just me though, although I think interpretation of the ending is definitely up to the viewer.

My policy: Unless he/she/it dies on screen in the movie or some character states that they're dead, then they lived.

I know this topic is really old but when I finished the movie I thought the same thing. I believed he died though, I mean that's what they seemed to be hinting at. Just the way No Name was talking too seemed to be like he was ready to go. Of course no one can say for sure what really happened but that's fine by me. I thought this was an excellent movie, and I recently bought it on dvd.
