Good. About time they got rid of those crappy games. (And yes, I predict that there's going to be a discussion about violence in video games, but something like comparing violence & rape is like comparing apples and tomatoes.)

It's about time.
It's good that they are going to police themselves before the government does it for them. |

It still absolutely baffles me that obviously, at some point, a group of people was sitting around a table, saying, "hey, I bet if we created a rape game, we could make money." And then they went ahead and did it. Hey, I understand the impulse to make a buck, but come on.

The post quoted below is being transcribed into this thread from a separate one since this one is more likely to have further responses.
Oh, they're not only serious, but it's actually not that unusual. There's an entire class of hentai games out there where heavy coercion or outright rape is a key component in the game play. I played one - Virgin Roster - once just to see what it was like, and deleted the game from my computer immediately when I was finished because I found it so detestable. The game's plot essentially involves the hero finagling his way into being a teacher so he can scope out girls - and female staff members - for his side business farming out sex slaves. Naturally a certain amount of conditioning and will-breaking is involved, so much so that only a couple of the probably 20 or so sex scenes in the game are consensual. (And the sick thing is, the protagonist is so fiendishly clever that it's not hard to see how he might get away with it in the real world.) That's a fairly typical game format for these types, and they've been around for years. The reason why they're only making a big stink now is because, prior to this, they have flown under the public radar. Illusion just made the name of this one a little too blatant to be overlooked. EDIT: And to answer Blood-, it's no surprise to me at all that someone thought this was a good idea. Rape or quasi-rape scenes have been around in American live-action porn for decades, and Japan is, even today, decidedly more sexist than the States. I'm sure there are psychological studies out there explaining how some guys get off on this kind of stuff. Last edited by Key on Tue Jun 02, 2009 3:51 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I for one would like to see their evidence either way. It's frustrating being in the audience not knowing if there's actually any merit to anything these people say or if they're just being political.

Are the Chicks on Anime going to cover this? I'd like to know their thoughts now that the issue is somewhat "resolved" and despite all the discussion we haven't really touched on the woman's perspective.
My take, well, if banning a type of game prevents the masses from throwing chairs in defense of children or whoever, I guess justice was served. Although, I guess this means we're getting more "romantic" stories in visual novels, which is always good. Still, I thought these games were doing fine by themselves in the little dark corners of the community. I mean, if people blew a lid over this particular game maybe it was for the best that they didn't see what was really out there. |

I wanted to say otherwise, but I saw you already wrote an addendum:
The live-action pornography industry will not be affected at all, and they'll keep producing live-action rape porno flicks. Furthermore, I'd say the true reason behind this ban is completely unimaginable by most users of this site and I'd rather not disclose it publicly; you'd get a cookie if you'd echo with me via PM. |

So wait, are rape games being banned because they might promote or induce rape? What about games of other violent natures? As far as I am aware people indulge in rape fantasies in both roles not too uncommonly; but they aren't anything to be seriously concerned about, because they're just fantasies. It isn't a crime to think.

Now that's weird...AIL company released h-games that's much worse than "rape game". Studio e.go! is on the safe side since they mostly released harem.
But then, how will h-game companies survive without the "rape" theme Are we seeing the era of h-games containing themes of only consented sex and harem (and of course mosaics)? Yeah, the "rape game" theme is there since mid 90's but these Japanese only realized to ban it now. Too late or never, I guess... |

Isn't the solution to just control the content's availability? Outright banning something because people hate it seems extreme.

The appeal of movies that present rape as entertainment is also lost on me, but playing a game where your proxy simulates rape scenarios just takes it to a new level of ickiness as far as I'm concerned. |

How about torture and rape? I think those are pretty close. The emotional side of me is pleased with this filth being gone. The rational side of me realizes that it's horrible stuff, but doesn't actually harm anyone. I then thought about the Punisher video game and while I was a little disturbed by the thought of torturing people I also thought it was novel and wouldn't have the game banned. Still it's hard not to think that the ban is a good thing. |

Good, now all the fictional characters are safe and won't be harmed anymore. Happy we jumped on that one quick before anyone got really messed up.

This ban will not change anything. The only thing that will change is stupid changes like this(lol) and text at the start of the game telling, "All sex in this game occurs with full consent of all parties involved".
EOCS has already banned loli games, but the only change was characters ages not being mentioned, characters school being called academy instead of high/middle/grade school and the start screen text telling how all of the characters are adults. If some games are really banned the creators can just change to CSA or go doujin. This is just a smoke screen to divert the publics attention to something else. |

Agreed. More specifically though, what needs to be changed? Was there some kind of evidence against the games, ...or is this just the mentality that anything the majority is offended by is grounds for legislation? |
