About time. If the distribs are smart they'll slap "From the creator of Eva!!!" all over it. If it does well, maybe we'll see more of the live-action films anime directors have helmed.

Viz actually had it first, but they did a piss-poor a job promoting
their live-action library like they do with their adult manga, and they had to sell it off to Kino. And Evangelion's dead, man. People who hated the last movie like myself would actually consider it one more reason not to see Love and Pop. Although the Asano factor would prompt me to see it, cus he's just so kawaii! |

I beg to differ.
animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=4886 Plus with a new Evangelion manga based on Girlfriend of Steel, it's not as dead as you might want it to be. |

Actually, that just proves it's dead, because they don't have any real new features for that set, so they're not even bother trying to milk the series for "additional footage", because they know only the remaining Evangelion fans will pick up whatever ADV sells and not the remaining anime fans. It's sort of like Lucas's bastardized Star Wars where he replaced old Anakin with young Anakin in the Jedi ending. Only the Star Wars fans who sit in front of theaters hoping Episode III won't disappoint like the last two films are likely to purchase that upcoming box set.

Except the only thing that was changed in the Renewal discs was the quality of the picture and sound. Gainax is not Lucas. They haven't changed a thing in Evangelion other than the director's cut episodes, and the stuff they added wasn't anything like Greedo shooting first.
Has the Anakin change been confirmed by a more credible source? Because I take much of what AICN says with a few spoons of salt. |

I'm having trouble deciphering an argument from that. Since when does something have to have additional footage to qualify as having a thriving fanbase? People have wanted to see Eva remastered for some time, Gainax wants to make as much money off of Eva as they can, so they rereleased the series remastered, and people bought it. ADV is doing the exact same thing, and people will buy it. Taking that into consideration, I would say that Eva is quite milkable. |

Louie-kun: The point is Anno, like Lucas, is double-dipping. And while there might not be new footage now, who's to say there won't be in the future? And Digital Bits claimed the Anakin thing was real too.
Pepperidge: Evangelion's not making as much money as before, which is why they're not trying to add new features, because only a few fans will still buy into it. |

Regardless, unlike Lucas, the original versions of episodes 21-24 are avalible on dvd to own. It's not like the only way to see Evangelion is through the Mega Special edition. But the main point is, Evangelion is not as dead as you make it out to be. What with the Renewal discs, an ongoing manga and a new one based on Girlfriend of Steel, a recently released PS2 game, and the possiblity of a live action movie, I'd say Evangelion's not ready to go to the morgue. |

Would be nice, but aside from World Apartment Horror, I think this is the last of it. There's Anno's latest film, but that one hasn't even been released on DVD in Japan yet. Mamoru Oshii's live-action films are all available, and I don't think there's any screaming fanboy desire for The Story of Yanagawa's Canals to get a Region-1 release. |

You have no idea at all.... Ok Viz did have the rights but was held up with the jp distribitor. I asked a friend who worked at Viz about it and that was the information that he gave me. Suffice to say, it is suprising that this is being released at all, perhaps the jp distributor was shopping around while hanging the carrot over Viz. As for Evangelion, it is still popular or there wouldn't be these spin offs currenlty released in Japan. |

Louie:
Assuming those are the original versions. I mean technically, the series was supposed to be it, but then Anno added the movies, so at this point, it's still "a work in progress", if he's releasing "director's cuts" of both the movies and the show.
As I've said in the past, the Japanese like to mass-market the hell out of a lot of franchises. That doesn't mean the merchandise is selling though. And the more crap available for a franchise, the more likely the franchise isn't doing too well on its own. lyricaldanichan:
Wouldn't have made a difference. They always sabotage sales of their own products, if they don't appeal to anyone who's 14 years of age or under, with little or no advertising. (See Pulp.) If you tried finding screenings for Dead or Alive or Uzumaki through their older website, you'd notice they rarely bothered updating.
The dvd rights would've taken equally as long to be available under Kino. Viz just wasn't up to the challenge of diversifying with live-action, and they lost some decent ancillary sales. If Shogakukkan hadn't been bought by Shueisha, that'd be the final nail in the coffin for the company. |

Thank goodness!
I've been looking for this film for quite some time, back when they had pictures from it in Newtype. And I remember thinking "didn't it have a us distro...was it being shopped around" but then never being able to find it. So yeah, YAY! I'll finally be able to buy it. |

Gatsu, your crazy and hilarious nonsensical leaps in logic never fail to amuse me.
You're now arguing that Evangelion is 'dead' because they keep releasing new merchandise, video games, and re-releases of the original DVDs. You then argue that the only people who will buy 'Star Wars' on DVD are the obsessive types who will wait in front of the theater for Episode III. I'd be willing to bet you $100 that that isn't true at all, and that 'Star Wars' will sell quite a few more copies than that. Then you say that the more merchandise there is available for something, the less 'successful' the franchise is, which is like saying the more money a company has, the less successful they are. WHICH MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL! Black is white and up is down in Gatsu world! |

Actually, while I disagree with him, what he said about the merchandise has some merit. The way I understand his line of thought, he's saying that if a property is still viable, the companies will invest money into making more of it. If, over all, it's lost its market, but it still has a few die-hard fans that will buy anything, it makes more sense for the company to flood the market with products that they don't have to put a whole lot of energy into developping. That way they continue to milk the die-hards for all their worth, all the while not wasting money on big stuff (like another series) that the larger market won't buy into. There's some truth to this. But Gatsu seems to ignore that there may be other reasons that the company isn't producing more high end stuff. My point being, a flood of merchandise and a near-dead property do often go hand in hand, but the first does not prove the latter. -t |
