Awesome news! I can't wait to see it! Hopefully it will get nominated for an Academy Award.

Doubt it... the competition's much tougher this year, with two Pacific Data films, and a Pixar, and Polar Express, not to mention the domestic release of the French Kaena: The Prophecy, which will have an all-star dub cast including Kirsten Dunst, Anjelica Huston, and the late Richard Harris. If anything Japanese gets nominated for Best Animated Feature next time, it will likely be Steamboy, Katsuhiro Otomo's first full-length film since Akira. (I'm assuming that with the Japanese release of Howl's Moving Castle being delayed until the fall, it won't get a domestic North American release until 2005.)

But will Steamboy be released in the US in time to be eligible for an Academy Award next year? I know the film was originally supposed to have a simultaneous or near-simultaneous US/Japan release, but haven't yet heard of any US release dates (even speculative ones).

I'm really hoping that "Innocence" gets an Academy nod. But then I would, wouldn't I? Wink

Steamboy's getting a July release in Japan, so I'm fairly confident Sony will give it a November or December arthouse run in North America.

And, this time, there's the Akira-director-factor they can capitalize on, so it won't go unnoticed by most mainstream critics the way their release of Cowboy Bebop went under the critical radar.

That's all very true but maybe if more animated movies will be released this year they'll nominate five movies instead of just three. I think "Innocence" has pretty good chance of being nominated especially considering that it was nominated in Cannes.

I was very upset when "Millennium Actress" and "Tokyo Godfathers" weren't nominated

Cowboy Bebop wasn't eligible last year because it was actually released back in 2002.

P.S. I wonder if Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children will be eligible for a nomination?

I think Advent Children is straight to dvd, so no, it wouldn't be eligible.

Is this true? Cause I had a bootleg trailer downloaded that shows the advent children trailer inside a movie theater in Japan...

Thank you for your enquiry. Innocence will be released by UIP in France
early December, the exact date is still to be confirmed, as are the other
territories.
