Gonzo is failing Hard. FUNimation buddy up with someone else.

Shaft, J.C. Staff and Kyoto Animation is a million times better than Gonzo. These are FACTS!

Kyoto Animation has yet to made a show that I enjoy. Gonzo made a lot of rubbish but they also made Gankutsuou, Blue Sub 6, Yukikaze, etc.

Again, those are opinions. But if you want to talk about the handling of their financial situations, you might be correct. Either way, you really should check out this wonderful resource called a dictionary.

And FUNi can buddy with whomever they feel, they're not contractually obligated to deal with GONZO alone, they're probably just on good terms or something which allows them first dibs. Who knows? Seems GONZO is going to try the appeal hardcore to the fanbase now though, aiming directly at their otaku center.

Has anyone considered that there is a reason for Funimation to be "friendly" with Gonzo? Makes buying controlling shares a lot easier.

Oh please. For my time and money Gonzo has produced more gems than those three combined. KyoAni doesn't even compare, they're extremely over rated, they've only got a handful of titles that are actually worth watching. It's easy to pick Gonzo apart because they produce so much and statistically they can't all be masterpieces, but when you step back and look at what they've actually produced it's a very impressive list.

I would agree with you Emerje and also point out that they're selling their game subsidiary. I am pretty sure that little aspect has been making them little to no real profit for a while. I don't see this as a sign of them failing hard as more as them finally cutting off dead weight. With the extra staff gone and this little area trimmed off they can focus more on what their primary function is. Animating. Plus with fewer projects being done at once now they can put a bit more time and attention into their shows which is always a good thing.

I heard about this on Sankaku Complex...

There is also some rumors going around on 2ch, supposedly Kadokawa may drop Gonzo as the producer of the upcoming second season of Strike Witches, supposedly as they have no need of them, tho such a move may seem less unlikely... As to whether Kyoto Animation, Gainax, J.C. Staff, or Madhouse might pick it up, might be possible...

Tho, if this is true and it does happen to Strike Witches, it will mean:

More story, and less panstu…

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Crying or Very sad

I really hope to GOD that NEVER happens!!!

This kind of thing is to be expected you know. It is the first day of Japan's fiscal year, so of course these sort of announcements will be made. I doubt it will really effect them in the long run even though there isn't any doubt that they are having trouble.

But Kyoto Animation hasn't made half as many good shows as Gonzo and the kind of shows they make aren't the kind of show American anime fans want most of the time so why on earth would you partner up with them? I could see ADV doing it if they manage to get back on their feet though.

Has it occurred to you that due to Gonzo's difficulties, Funimation might have been able to secure future rights to all their shows for a very good price? I'm just speculating here, but one thing I'm positive of is that Funimation was fully aware of Gonzo's status before they made the deal (Everyone knew about Gonzo's problems).

No, they're your opinion. A very reasonable opinion, but an opinion nonetheless.

Sometimes I feel like the only neutral party in the ongoing Studio Wars. I really don't care who makes what as long as they make a good show I want to watch. On that level, Gonzo, Shaft, J.C. Staff and Kyoto Animation have all done well, in my opinion.

Right now, GDH is restructuring everything and we won't know for a little while yet if it's worked out for them or not. This new bit of news is interesting and all but until we see the effects of the fall out, it's just interesting.

I do hope Gonzo can become a fully profitable company again though. I have quite a few Gonzo titles on my shelves and virtually all of them came from my Texas Overlords.

Still, I'm kind of surprised they are selling the game subsidiary. Maybe I missed something but the article seems to make it out to be a profitable part of the company. Confused

Well, they did make a profit(300-400k us) and while any profit in this economy is good, the article doesn't cite the game division's profits last year. For all we know, the profit has been steadily decreasing and the trend may show less profit projected for next year or maybe even a loss. It's just pure speculation, but the game division may be a very slowly sinking ship.

Yes because your clearly the judge of Studio quality.

While Gonzo has made crap, and they do have a tendency to create shitty endings, they have also made a ton of great anime.

I can see where you're going at. As of now, only Gonzo, BONES, and Madhouse all had recently collaborated with Western companies. And out of the three anime studios, Gonzo is the only one that's downsized enough for a quick pickup by FUNimation. Now if I was FUNimation, I'll setup Gonzo with the Western publishers and production companies. The Japanese anime industry is just too hostile and niche for the current Gonzo studio to compete, let along to survive.

I also think that Gonzo is one of the only companies willing to examine the faults in their business model and change it according to the way the market is changing and to acknowledge that the Japanese market and the American market are different and need to be addressed differently.

Forgot one, Studio I.G. has a dedicated international department for their licensing so they set-up their international distribution more so then similar companies. If I remember correctly Gonzo had a policy of not making shows unless there was an international appeal/distributor willing to back them. I don't know if that has changed significantly, but that is unlikely considering the strategic alliance that they have with Funimation, as if it's just a strategic alliance Funimation would still be giving them the capital they would need to make their shows so Funimation can turn around and distribute them quicker than what they could before. Is there a potential for a friendly takeover? Sure, and it would make sense to takeover a company that has an international appeal and would be "cheaper" to pick-up (not saying Gonzo is poor or makes inferior products, but one way to change the industry is closer relations with distributors.)
