Before I get to the point of this thread, I need to state that what I'm writing about in here will seem like some kind of conspiracy theory, however everything in here is as I have learned. Either by phoning various companies, checking their websites, and conversing with people over chat (internationally) and having them help me learn more. For the record, everything here is being done from Sweden.
Let us begin... *drumroll* The Conspiracy of Berserk Volume 15 It was about two weeks ago that I went to check all the stores in town to complete my Berserk collection. Several volumes had been delayed and were not in stock on the online stores, so I had several holes. I filled them easily. Except one hole. Volume 15. None of the stores carried it, and both stated that they had difficulty aquiring it. One checked with the warehouse from where they get their volumes, and it was not in stock. The other store had a similar story. The volume was not in stock at their stores. I went back home and checked with my regular online store. It did not carry the volume. I noticed it said "not in stock". No more information. I decided to check with another store. It did not have it either. I decided to check with a third store. Which didn't have it either. The online stores I checked were: www.adlibris.se www.bokus.se www.sfbok.se First and third stores did not have it and had trouble aquiring it. First store had not had the volume in stock since january. Third store had not had it in stock for a YEAR and the storehouse was unable to deliver to them. The second store had the volume "permanently out of stock". I know this since I phoned two of them to speak in person. Curiously enough, every other volume of Berserk was available from these stores. At this point I started to suspect that the Swedish child porn law had something to do with this, seeing that Roshinu spends most of volume 15 running around naked... And there's lots of other nudity in that volume as well... However, this proved to be not so much the case when I got another idea. I checked www.amazon.co.uk. Guess what? They did not have it. Out of stock. I check with two other uk bookstores. Didn't have it EITHER. I decide to check with a guy I know over chat from Poland. He found a store selling it. All volumes of that store had a delivery time of 2-5 days. Volume 15 had a deliver time of 30 days... Let's just say I don't think they had that particular volume in stock. Guess where this takes me now? Finland, obviously. I contact someone living in finland. He managed to track down several volumes that were in store, but many were also sold out. And those where it was sold out were not able to RESTOCK. Sometime during this procedure I actually went and called the Swedish custom's service. They knew nothing. The situation is thus as follows: One volume, particularily loaded with nudity and violence towards children is practically impossible to get in either UK, Sweden or Finland. First I thought it had something to do with the law, but then I thought maybe it's more an issue of Dark Horse simply ceasing distribution of that volume to europe to remain on the safe side. It IS quite an old volume after all. Out of curiosity I'd like to know if this volume is difficult to aquire in other european countries as well. |

Stuff goes out of print. There's no reason to think Berserk Vol. 15 will stay out of print any more than there is to think the same of, say, Blade Of The Immortal Vol. 2.
The only way it won't get reprinted will be if Dark Horse / DMP decide it wouldn't be profitable to do so. That's how publishing works. If Amazon.co.uk, Book Depository and the rest weren't willing or legally able to sell it, they'd delist it. And since it's readily available from Amazon.co.uk's marketplace (new and used), they obviously haven't banned it. |

I'm not thinking it's a ban. I'm thinking someone along the line thought that it would be a good idea to cease delivering Berserk vol 15 to Europe... Because I can find every other volume at every store. But sure, your suggestion is also realistic... |

Do you have any friends or relatives in the United States? You can buy volume fifteen from ebay, have it sent to someone you know in America, who then passes it on to you. I know it is annoying, but what else are you going to do? What else can you do?
By the way, what about this? Amazon ships to Europe, doesn't it? |

It's just out of print no need to panic. You should just ask your friend in Finland to buy it for you, because some shops still have it in stock.

English version? www.archonia.com has it in stock, they might ship to Sweden. If not, I could buy it for you and send it to Sweden, for a price... Shipping is €4,44 (standard) or €6,16 (priority), plus the price of the manga and a little extra for acting like proxy...
If you can find Excel Saga 8 or Saikano 7 (both from Viz) I'm willing to trade. |

I don't know about Sweden's laws so I guess it's possible. However, the simplest explanation is usually the correct one and in this case there is a much simpler explanation. It's simply gone out of stock. It's sort of weird but it does happen. For some reason it seems like a single volume will often go OOP even though there is plenty of every other volume. I don't know if it's them printing less copies initially or maybe most stuff gets reprinted but a few odd volumes don't I don't know. It definitely does happen though. Blade of the immortal which Moomintroll mentioned is a good example. Volumes 1 and 3 are everywhere. However, recently volume 2 has become really hard to find. A little while ago volume 5 was nearly impossible to find but then it got reprinted and now it's fine. Volume 4 has been also really tough to find for as long as 5 but for some reason it never got reprinted. It's strange but it's just how it works. In all likelihood that's the case with Berserk as well. If you're okay with importing from Poland or Finland though it would have to go through customs and all that so you shouldn't have a problem just importing from the US. It shouldn't really make a difference. It's just going to cost a bit more for shipping and it's only one small book.

This thread is more appropriate to the Retail forum and so is being moved there.

I don't know if Swedish Customs exempt books from any import taxes, but such taxes cannot be charged on products being imported from one EU Member State to another (save cigarettes etc). Unless a US import is cheaper in the long run, I'd use Archonia for this reason. They can deliver to Sweden. |

Excel Saga volume 8? I can check for it tomorrow. It should be in. If I find it and my Finnish attempt fails (if he forgets it or smth) we can make a trade. It's ok with me. |
