Is there some unspoken rule that all yaoi manga titles have to be gut-dissolvingly horrible? What about the poor readers who have to get past the checkout counter with that name stamped on their purchase?

Most likely; at least, it appears that way. Anime smile

Well, if people want to read it so badly, then they have to deal with the title, embarrassing or not. ...Seriously, though, that is really disturbing...

Get thee to Amazon. That's what I do. Otherwise I never would've purchased 2 volumes of Dog Style. But seriously, I'm a yaoi fan and this even makes me cringe a bit. Surely that's not the literal translation of the title. Any Japanese speakers know what it really is?

It's the title, but here's the kicker-- it's apparently a sequel to a previous volume, Shihaisuru Yubisaki, by the same author (Higashino Yuu). Why license the sequel and not the first book? Unless it's only a sequel in that both books exist in the same "universe" (with some common characters, etc.), if that makes sense. I really hate being dropped in the middle of an existing storyline...

(I went poking around in the aarin forum and funnily enough, someone has already reported it as being licensed. They are so quick about removing licensed titles there! Very Happy)

Only if it's from Kitty.
I mean, What's so bad about Our Kingdom?
Yellow?
After I Win?
Black Sun?
Blue Sheep Reverie?
Bondz?
Challengers?
Crimson Spell?
Happiness Recommended

I sort of liked All Nippon AirLine

Have you every wandered the aisle in the adult video section?
I always thought bad word play was standard.
What was that Palin one that was rushed out?
Something about Nailin' Palin?

Kitty tends to go for smuttier titles. They licensed another title that was a sequel before--Thunderbolt Boys(2004), but never bothered with 2000's Denkou Sekka Boys.

They've also licensed Yami ni Tooboe, Mune ni Toge (2006), but not Dokunoaji. We've also seen Family (2007), but not Family Complex (2003)

So it's business as usual for them.

But didn't ADV do that with a couple titles? Peacemaker Kurogane & Loki Ragnarok come to mind.

*laughs* Hey, you're right. When I referenced Dog Style in my first post, I was only randomly pulling a somewhat embarrassing title out of my head, but upon reviewing Kitty's titles, that is one of theirs. As is I Want to be Naughty, Because I'm a Boy!, and But I'm Your Teacher (the latter 2 of which I own and yes, they are pretty much PWP titles). Funny, I never noticed that trend before (although Kitty does have some titles - like Crimson Spell, which I adore - that buck that trend too).

Dog style is actually the original Japanese title. Everyone who's read the books knows why it's named like this. On character is always referred to as a "stray". I bet the Mangaka chose the title because of the double entendre.

But seriously, English titles aren't that bad compared to German ones. Examples: Sexperiments, Kiss me teacher, Kiss me student, falling in love in Osaka etc.

The other ones are difficult to translate but I bet you get the point. ^^'

I don't know if I am more shocked people actually buy series that (might be slightly embarassing in a check out lane) or if I am shocked Kitty Media is still around. I thought Kitty closed over a decade ago?

Kitty Media is definitely still around. But as for standing in line at the check out counter with some of Kitty Media's more salacious titles, it's really not all that bad. Remember, the store clerks have to stock the stuff so they already know about the titles and their content.

Besides Kitty Media doesn't really sell much in the big chain stores, does it? The only store in my part of the world where Kitty Media is available in significant quantity is at my local independent comic shop where Kitty Media titles are stored in a separate Adults Only room along with the rest of the pornographic magazines, books, and DVDs. Nearly every title in that room -- yaoi, yuri, and hentai alike -- sounds as bad as "Gay's Anatomy", just as CCSYueh said.

YAY!! Tokage Ouji is the BEST!! Very Happy I bought the untranslated version, but my Japanese is really spotty.....NOW I CAN READ IT!!! Anime hyper Anime hyper Anime hyper
I know nothing about Gay's Anatomy, and judging by the unimaginative title, I don't wanna. I don't read a ton of Yaoi, and this doesn't make me want to. Sad

I thought they were just doing yaoi lately, but TRSI has a 2-volume title listed that looks like yuri.

Oh it's around. Although i'm into heavy loads of fanservice, that kind of fanservice is where i cross the line unfortunately. Also they need an official licensor in order to keep the fansubbers at bay cause since no one touches those titles, fansubbing for them has over-runned like crazy.
