So is this show softcore porn as some person compared it too? Or is it just a very disturbing show with some sexual suggestive content?
The premise of the show intrigues me and I am a big big fan of Noein so having that connection is appealing.
I am NOT interested in a softcore porn. |
Well, the nudity level is such that you see about as much of the female body as can be legally shown in Japan. There are multiple sex scenes, but for the most part they just indicate that they're starting to have sex or that they recently finished. There are a couple of sex scenes, however, that show a bit more. Unlike a hentai, this series definitely has a plot and the pornographic aspect of it is secondary, but there's definitely nudity in it along with some sex (though most of it is implied sex). It is not pornographic on the same level as something like Kite or Mezzo Forte.
If you're looking for pornography, this series isn't going to do it for you. There just isn't enough of it. On the other hand, if you're looking to outright avoid pornography, you're not going to want to see it either. This is not a series designed to get you off sexually, but it does contain sexual content. |
Not interested in hentai in the slightest and the way this was described in the thread has (and your post didn't solve this either) confused me if I would like it.
I don't mind suggestive scenes in anime and a bit more adult theme just not out right porn is not a problem for me.
The attraction from the description is the over all story that had me interested.
Just not sure if this is to close to porn to bother lol Guess I will keep watching this thread to see how the discussion unfolds.

Mnemosyne.isn't.hentai. Nor is it softcore porn in anime form. Yes it has some very graphic scenes, but it's no where near what Kite or Mezzo was. So don't let it stop you, it's a niche anime for a reason; there aren't many anime like Mnemosyne out there.

Didn't expect that. I don't know, more than anything else I was just really disappointed in this. I had high hopes for it since it was described as 'hardboiled scifi'. I guess is sort of is but to me, hardboiled shouldn't mean a lot of graphic sex and violence for it's own sake. It should mean a lot of that stuff as a result of a dark and gritty story.
It would have helped massively if this didn't start so poorly too. The first episode is so random. Things seemed to happen for no real reason. She is running from somebody who is trying to kill her (and she's naked for some reason). Then she meets a guy and for no apparent reason decides to help him because something isn't "right" and some guys are chasing him. Then they get caught and some random crazy lady tortures her with body piercings. Then it turns out she's immortal and he's a clone and there are zombies....ooooookay. It's one thing to have things that aren't yet explained but in this case it seems too much like a bunch of random events happening for no real reason other than because it would be cool if they did. Overall, the problem is its all hardcore and has a lot of graphic violence and nudity (which is sort of cool) but outside of that there there was a couple cool action sequences but otherwise there just wasn't that much here. Just a whole lot of excess of graphic violence, nudity, and various sex related plot points. I don't mind this stuff but it really isn't enough to carry an anime on its own. (And FYI, I didn't just watch the first episode, I stuck with it until episode 3. It gets a little more logical but not much. It feels more and more exploitative as it goes along too).

That's right out of the handbook.
Look you weren't around obviously, but many of us (and when I say many I mean A LOT) don't want to revisit the scourge that was KnJ discussions every time some crusader wants to make some fantastical linkage.
Quote: | It's not hard. America + sex = KILL IT WITH FIRE. Puritanical nutjobs can get anything they want if they whine about it hard enough. I wouldn't be surprised, if they had to worry about retailers wanting to stock this--again, as in KnJ--that there might be some big pressure on either unlicensing it entirely or marketing it as a hentai. |
Wow. Unless you live in Lancaster County you pretty much have no basis to say this. Because it is totally opposite of conventional thought. News Flash: Sex + Violence = Sell like hotcakes in America. The only fire that will result might be due to them flying off the shelves at high speed. So if these so called nut-jobs you speak of get whatever they want, they sure as hell haven't been doing a very good job of it.
It's not that hard. Flat chested girls ≠ scene after scene of a toddler, overtly making sexual advances towards adults while all at the same time making a joke about it to make it seem more innocent than it really was. So just stop.

Dude, you need to simmer the hell down. Seriously. I don't know what the heck your problem is, but it's not hard to make comparisons between offensive properties. Take off the tin foil hat and stop acting like I've got some agenda or whatever you're seeming to think.
Why is it such an issue to bring up similarities here? Also, just because I wasn't on the forum doesn't mean I wasn't around during the KnJ debacle. Lord.
Though, amusingly, I -do- live fairly near Lancaster County. xD

I'm really not sure how to describe the situation better. I really wouldn't classify Mnemosyne as hentai, but there are sex scenes. The closest comparison I can think of would be Ikkitousen, but that's a really unfair comparison. Ikkitousen is meant for fanservice and lacks a real plot. Mnemosyne has a real plot and while it does have fanservice in the sense that there's lots of nudity, it isn't fanservice in the same way that panty shots and the like are in Ikkitousen. It's much more hardcore and what sexual content there is is definitely related to the plot.
I suppose that I should say that it's like Ikkitousen in the sense that there are sex scenes, but most of the actual sex isn't shown. However, the actual level of nudity is higher in Mnemosyne.
Really, I don't know of a good way to explain it. You can always watch it and find out. You'll find out really quickly that way, and if you're willing to watch fansubs without buying the DVDs later, then I guess it would make sense to do that. If not, you can always rent it once it's released.
But really, it's hard to explain the level of sex in this series. The only way you're going to really understand is to watch it yourself. About the best that I can say is that Mnemosyne definitely isn't a hentai, but it also definitely contains sex scenes, and that's not exactly the most informative description there is.
However, I do think that the plot is quite good and if you think that it sounds interesting, then you should probably check it out.

But it's so amusing when you're so confrontational
In all seriousness, I don't even get why anyone would want to WATCH this, let alone be interested. It sounds so depraved, so shallow, so disgusting, that honestly, I can't wrap my brain around it. Look, I'm OK with bloody gore (even in my younger years, things like R-rated movies, Mortal Kombat, etc. never bothered me), but to mix sexual acts and violence is a whole new level of nasty. I don't get the sick thrill some people get out of it, and after reading some of the horrifying things that DO happen in the series here, I honestly don't understand why FUNi took a gamble on this.
This belongs in the ninth circle with other horrible OVAs that never deserved the light of day, like M.D. Geist...but at least Geist didn't have torture porn.

It's also the closest anime I could think of, so I think it's a fair comparison to make. The level of "implied sex" in both of these shows is very similar, though story-wise, it's night and day.

Because some people will buy it, like me. And don't start with me about confrontational, Dargon is the one that started ranting about being a troll.
But seriously, Mnemosyne still has a plot behind it. I'm not going to go and say it's for everyone, far from it. But it's not the mindless torture porn everyone is harping on it for.

Let me say this: The plot is there to set up the sex and the sexual violence. The sex and the sexual violence aren't a result of the plot, and they don't do anything to make the plot interesting in the least (The angels are like Catnip for girls, and the girls clothes basically instantly come off in the presence of them. Then they get...eaten....). The sexual aspect is so woven into the plot that I don't think you could censor the series even if you wanted to. The solution to almost any problem in the series is sex (or rather, trading sex for information, sex for needed items, etc). They invent ways for sex to happen at every turn, just so that they can show it. I don't know how someone could say that the sex is necessary to the plot (you could say the violence is, though I wouldn't say the sexual violence is). Cut out the sex, and it is just a violent show about immortal girls that regenerate, and the mystery behind why they are immortal. Add in the sex, and combine it with the violence, and you've got something completely different.
I just don't know how you could say that something with plenty of nude sex scenes isn't pornographic. It doesn't show the actual sex like Kite, but there are more instances of sex happening than in Kite, and in more graphic ways (like S&M, Bondage, Guro, etc). I would go so far as to say that the creators most likely created sexual situations first, and then devised a plot that allowed them to work all of those situations in. I'm not a puritan (I did reference Bible Black earlier) and the real issue here is that Funimation is spending very limited resources, in a time of economic peril, to bring a show that very few people will enjoy to the US market. A show that if discovered by parents will probably mean a load of trouble for Funimation no less.
If you don't like seeing naked girls get chomped on by winged zombie humans (angels, though not in the biblical sense) or girls involved in goory S&M, this is not the show for you. If you liked Saw or Kite, this is ABSOLUTELY the show for you. If you go into it thinking there is a good story though, it is my opinion that you will be greatly disappointed.

Most people don't know offhand what "Mnemosyne" refers to, so leaving it as just that would be no different than releasing a title left in incomprehensible Japanese like "Ichigo Mashimaro." And the literal "Mnemosyne: Daughters of Mnemosyne" is even worse.
(Or are you saying that [change in title] = [censored content]?)

You can't EVER replace Kugimiya |
Okay, I'm pretty sure that Rie Kugimiya will still be present and accounted for if you play the DVDs in Japanese with subtitles. I can never understand this argument, this idea of "English dubs ruin/destroy/butcher/mar anime just by their mere existence." Sure, I like Rie Kugimiya just as much as any fellow Rie Kugimiya fanboy, but nobody's "replacing" her. Only playing the same character she played in another language for those who choose to listen to it.
As for the show itself...after watching the first two episodes, my question was not "does this stand a chance in hell of being licensed," but rather "Why is this not already licensed?" I'm surprised ADV didn't go for it, as it seems like the kind of dark/edgy/violent/sex-tinged show they'd zero in on. Or maybe they did, and Funi out-muscled them. But this will be a probable purchase for me, unless the subsequent 4 episodes become a complete disaster. Yeah the content gets into extreme territory, but I needed something like this to break up the Shugo Chara Doki / Wedding Peach / Pretty Cure Splash Star Magical Girl binge I'd been on.

No doubt.Mnemosyne came out when I was knee deep in Aishiteruze Baby,Ashita no Nadja,Precure MAX,and SuperGals. Mnemosyne and Kaiji pulled me out of my mahou shoujou/shoujou fest as well.Evened it out more than anything really.
Can't wait for the DVD's.
Zalis:Thanks for your work on Cosmos Pink Shock,BTW.I love 80's anime. If it's not you, then disregard.

What makes you say that? Sounds like a typical comment from a weeaboo.
I didn't think anyone would get Mnemosyne, but at the same time, I wasn't surprised to see FUNi pick it up.
Now, if they'll also get both seasons of Meine Liebe...
