I'm just wondering what happens to the anime industry when Miyazaki retires... (i.e. dies cause the guy always threatens to retire, but never does). We need someone else to win these awards...

As much as I love Yoko Kanno and Macross Frontier's soundtrack, I didn't really think it was her best work, or anything. I guess I can't really think of a stronger soundtrack for an anime in recent time, though.
I wonder how good Ponyo really is. I hope its licensed for R1 soon.

Well, it's supposed to come out sometime this summer into theaters, but who knows if that will be like a nationwide thing or a limited showing like it was for Howl's Moving Castle. As for a DVD release, we probably won't hear news of that until closer to the end of the year with any luck. X.X

As many times as I've heard people trash talk Code Geass I'm surprised It won anything.
Dos any one know how good the story is for Macross Frontier? All I ever seem to hear about is the soundtrack. Is this show something I should be going out of my way to see if I'm a huge fan of the original TV series?

It's a fairly decent Macross series. Maybe not up to par to the original, but at least it's not overly long like the original was.

I thought the original was a pretty good length. I don't think I would have liked it nearly as much if it had ended right after they made it back to earth.
I think I'll take the time to check Frontier out. Thanks for the input.

wow...two of 2008s worst shows for best of the year?
Code Geass R2 for best Screenplay?
Thats almost vomit inducing. Pretty pathetic showing compared to last years...then again, 2008 was a pretty awful year overall.

That's because it's nowhere even near as bad as anyone says it is. It was also a stand out series this year that got everyones attention, there's really no way to deny it. It's just the simple fact that it became the cool thing to do to bash it and put it down for just about everything humanly possible. I've never seen a show get so much hate just for existing. There's really no denying that for it's flaws (and any series has them by the way) that it got far more then it's share. I've seen way worse shows guilty of far worse atrocities of storytelling and characterization get off with much much less in the way of uber-criticism.
Anyway I don't really care much to wax about whether any of these shows deserved awards or not because I really....just don't care. These are this organization awards and not mine after all. I'd rather just leave people to have their own meltdowns over Code Geass R2 winning for screenplay and to start questioning whether Yoko Kanno deserved to win the award for music again.

This whole awards (whose trophy, I hear from some, is shaped like a female part) is starting to remind me of the Oscars, where the winners/nominees are bashed instead of celebrated.

Sort of, but in Code Geass R2's case it's more of a corrolary. Mention it to some people and their immediate response will be something along the lines of "WHAT?! CODE GEASS?! THAT SHOW HAD TERRIBLE....." *My eyes start to glaze over*, "I'm sorry what was that you said again?", "Oh nothing....nothing at all". Typical conversation about the show really.
It's why I honestly just try not to bring it up in a conversation when I can avoid it because it makes people freak out and start bashing away as a sort of classically conditioned response. I'd rather not hear it anymore as it's gotten really old and silly by now. The show was a hit and a lot of people (including myself) really enjoyed it. Some folks just need to learn to deal with it and to let other people enjoy it's existence on at least some level whether they liked it or not instead of acting so immature.
In Kanno and Miyazaki's case I think it's just a matter of them already winning it so many times that people are tired of seeing the same old winners.
I think a lot of people also missed the part about the award being given to the show that made the greatest contribution to the world of anime in it's respective category. Then again I suppose that also opens the way to snarky comments just the same.

Yeah, Code Geass was awesome, but best screenplay should've gone to Bounen no Xamdou as far as I'm concerned. No contest this year, really.

Yeah Xamdou was good, but did it necessarily make the greatest contribution with it's limited release over PSN?

True, its exposure was limited I guess.
