Some otaku would be starving themselves anyway so they can afford more anime/manga.

Japan, you've done it again. You've come up with a retardiculous product. A product that serves no purpose other than to sell it based on the factor of the seiyuu.
Though I wonder if anyone else would buy a scale with Tiffany Grant as Asuka, yelling at you for various things (and not just your weight). I would!

How about a Norio Wakamoto scale? "Losing weight takes hard work and guts!"

Or a Taiga Aisaka scale. "You're worse than a stupid dog. You're a fat stupid dog"

(raises hand) Not for $1000, of course.

I can't help it, but somehow reading "pedometer" in combination with anything Japan-related cracks me up every time. Not that it happened often till now, but it did just happen!
Apart from that - I like the concept. I hit the gym on a regular basis since a year and while weight-loss isn't a top-priority to me, it sure would be motivating to hear some positive feedback from the ol' scale whenever I succesfully drop pounds. Or some funny remark when it goes up again. The tension would be kinda exciting, as you never know what random phrase will come up.
Now if it wouldn't be this ridiculously pricey, I'd even get it ^^
@zanarkand princess: Maybe I'm turning into a crazed tsundere-masochist, but I like that thought. Making her stutter some pseudo-compliment would be highly motivating o_O

So 20 "lucky" (probably 10 as they'll buy both models to have the 2 voice tracks) otaku will buy this and probably the units will end up unused in the closet, besides boxes of cup ramen, dvds and manga as testaments of ultimate nerd-dom.

Doesn't the article say that the purchase of one of the scales includes a subscription to a weight loss program that normally costs more? Wouldn't that actually make the scale less of an expensive item in itself and more of a bonus with a deal on the weight loss program?
In other words, the whole point is to try and get a whole new group of people, otaku, to join the program at a discount with a gift rather than sell a very unusual and expensive scale. Kind of like when one of my local banks started giving away gifts when you set up an account.
I'd love a talking scale myself. (Though an English VA would be far preferred in my case.)

As much as I like Taiga I would rather Ryuuji. He would probably do a better job at not breaking down your self esteem while you try to lose weight.

As much as that would be awesome, I wouldn't buy a scale for even $100 dollars, let alone $1000! Japan's a bit overpriced, though...
