I have heard a lot of controversy over which is the better series, Gasaraki or Evangelion. I've seen the first 3 DVDs of Gasaraki and only a little Evangelion, and I was wondering what other people think.

Gasaraki is a very similar series to Eva. It is about two people who can manipulate gigantic anchient "robots" called Kugai. Its a very secretive series.

BTW, dudesup, I really disliked the first episode too, but its like one of those episodes where they introduce the series. It gets A LOT better in the later episodes.

its actually took me up to dvd 3 to really warm up to Gasaraki. It doesn't have immediate robot fighting/bad guy destroying gratification like Eva since you're not really sure who the bad guys are in Gasaraki. Personally, I prefer Gasaraki since it has a more complex story and more indepth characters then Eva. With some thinking you CAN figure out what is going in in Gasaraki. Its main objective is not to confuse you like Eva does.

Well, one thing Gasaraki and NGE have in common is that their endings are both terrible.

I watched about half of Gasaraki and I really bored of it because is was of such a serious nature (which I don't really like). I liked Evangelion a bit more. Both of the series left me lost a lot of the time.

I like Gasaraki, not outstanding but good and much more "realistic" than eva. The thing is the first seven episodes are slooow but it does reward a patient veiwer who likes an intricate plot. It's a bit like a Tom Clancy novel with a supernatural aspect.
I put Gasaraki in a group of anime that aren't "typical" anime in that try to do something a little different (In this case be a political thriller) which American companies seem to pick up to see if they have a market. Some examples: Princess Nine, Arjuna, Figure 17, Dai Guard. Sometimes they end up with a sleeper hit like P9.
Eva a "classic" which I am biased against because I would love to choke Shinji to death.

All the best,

Nani?

The main difference in the series is the atmosphere. Gasaraki feels like a Sunrise/Takahashi mecha series, where the main characters are military officials dealing with a long serial story. Eva feels very Gainax to me, with it's young angst filled main characters in a more episodic format. Gasaraki is stark and has a slowly unfolding plot, which consists of several not so related plot threads. Eva has a mysterious plot which remains buried (for the most part) beneath the episode's plot. Eva is also a little more focused on the three children with a supporting cast of four or five. Gasaraki has to balance out the huge Gowa clan with Yushiro's platoon, and that doesn't even count the characters on the other side. Because of these difference it is IMO easier to jump into an episode of Eva than it is to watch a random episode of Gasaraki. I've enjoyed both series, and don't think they are too much alike, although you will hear a ton of Gasaraki is like FMP, Eva is like RahXephon, Escaflowne is like Dunbine type comments with any mecha show.

Gasaraki is the kind of series that has a lot of subtly that runs parallel with current affairs in the world recently. It takes a lot of cerebral investment and a good knowledge of history of the 20th century. Eva was just a miscarriage, and a bloody mess as well.

I personally wasn't fond of either. I though shinji was too whiney for my taste. I like strong charaters for some reason. And gasaraki when I finished watching left me with a headache. I will admit though with what someone had posted, they both had a terrible ending.

Anyone who can't stand the whininess of Shinji in the anime should read the Manga instead as he has a lot more backbone there. spoiler[One scene that comes to mind is the one after his father utilised the dummy plug system and Shinji is called to his office to explain himself. In the anime Shinji just tells his father that he is quitting but in the manga he tries to punch his father but is stopped by one of the NERV agents. I think that it was a very nice touch by the mangaka.]

I generally think that with a few subtle changes to the story the mangaka has made significant improvements in the storyline.

I'd have to agree with that. In general, everyone is still pretty much a fruitcake, but it's much less one-sided than it was in the anime.
