I just started reading this series, and I do like it. I'm generally not fond of the older drawing style, but the story, along with the great bits of food knowledge and trivia, is worth it. Definitely not for everyone--all serious with out the seemingly required eye-candy, and no fighting outside of arguments with his father--I can definitely recommend it if you love food or a more serious story. It should also be a hit with fans of A. Bourdain Wink

From what I understand, no; they're doing themed compilations. Which stands to reason since there's a ton of it and it's like asking if anyone's going to release every single episode of Oprah on DVD.

A manga about...Japanese cuisine? What's next, a completely serious serial about the daily life of a salaryman?

Unit: Yeah, those cooking titles seem to do better here than expected.
Even Dr. Master kept Jan; and that company canceled everything else.

Actually they already did that. The title is Salary man Kintaro. There is a manga version and a anime version. The anime was licensed years ago though.

Hey, they're release every single chapter of Naruto, aren't they? I'd buy, what, all 109 volumes if they released them sequentially. But I'm not the market indicator fan.

I'm very disappointed VIZ is taking the easy way out, but I'll buy it anyway. Its the type of title I love dearly and is underrepresented in the market due to its non-blockbuster/actiony sensabilities.

We got two copies at my store and I immediately snapped one up... the other is on our new releases endcap and hasn't moved at all in two weeks.

I think Salary Man would make a great idea for a Mega Man boss.

But seriously, my question here is "Can't you get the same effect from an Oriental cookbook?" I guess any exposure is good exposure, but it just seems so...odd.

Why? Its a slice of life with a specific focus... the only difference between it and Aria or any other slicer is that its main focus is the subject and all of its trappings and interactions are based on it (so far) as opposed to the ambiance (Aria) or the drama (H&C)...

And no, you couldn't get the same effect... its the difference between watching a cooking show and doing a dry read of a recipe. Reading Futari Ecchi instead of the latest Dr.Ruth manual.

What with all its graphic depictions of an exotic cuisine, is this an example of Food Porn?
If it is, the fact it is in the form of a manga might suggest culinary hentai is making its break into the mainstream. I wonder how well it'll do against full-colour cookbooks.

No, it would be "food porn" if a piece of sushi started humping a bowl of ramen. Someone will read this and draw that now, you know

Surprizingly enough, I googled it and someone did just that. I've seen and read plenty of cooking shows, but the artwork seemed well drawn.

What I would like to see next is the daily life of a garbage pick up driver or dish washer. Or something exceptionally uncommon, but still relatable.

I bought this at Borders last weekend. I was shocked they had not one but two copies.
