I own volumes 1 and 2 of Gurren Lagann and after watching them, the SUB only version, I noticed that a DUB was done at a time? I don't mind subs at all but I would still like to see what the deal is with the dub version. Is it going to be released? I heard ADV had it but then something happened?
Any info on the subject will be much appreciated, thanks! note: Apologies for spelling Gurren wrong in the topic header!

ADV originally acquired the license to the series some time ago, but due to circumstances that were never really fully explained, they swiftly lost the license before any real dub work was done; it was subsequently picked up by Bandai Entertainment. The volumes you own are a bare-bones sub-only release Bandai put out while they were still dubbing the series, for fans unwilling to wait until a dubbed version would be available. Currently, two-thirds of the series is available via bilingual releases, with the final third soon to follow; you should be able to find them with a quick RightStuf search.

Did you buy the specifically marked sub-only release expecting a dub? The dub is in the regular bilingual release.

I've heard that the Dub dvds are a bit more expencive than the subs. But I enjoyed the Dub when it aired on sci-fi, so it might be worth the extra cash.

Hmm I didn't really take a really close look at what I was buying I guess. I never really check  .
I just picked up what was at my regular anime store.. there was Gurren Lagann volumes 1 and 2 (4 discs) and a special edition of #1..didn't say right up front that it was Sub Only.. I didn't take a close perusal .. hmm well maybe ill search for the Dub ones on Rightstuf and see whatsup. Thanks for the info guys! UPDATE: Ok, checked out Rightstuff.. saw the hybrid DVD's that have the english DUB.. Didn't see those at my anime store.. hmm Ill check on it tommorow. Oh well! at least I now know they're available.. Again, thanks for the info.

The dub is pretty mediocre, you're not missing out on much. Sure, Simon and Yoko are decent, but Kamina and others leave something to be desired. Though, I have to admit, Steven Blum is an excellent Leeron.
Then again, the subtitles are flawed, too. I own the first sub-only DVD and find it irritating that the subtitles are nearly centered on the screen. I wonder why the subtitles are so high up. Bandai Entertainment has weird subtitle issues. Just look at the Zeta Gundam and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya releases. |

It may be the settings on your equipment. I also have that first DVD and did not notice this problem at all. |

I played it on all televisions in my house and my computer and the subtitles are noticably higher on the screen than subtitles normally are. |

That's nothing. He played Professor Nebraska in Trigun, sounding nothing like he normally does. I think he used the same voice in a one-off character early in Gurren Lagann, too- one of the beastman, if I'm not mistaken. The guy has a lot more range than folks give him credit for. |

I'd personally rate it as excellent, with the possible exception of Kamina (Kyle Hebert wasn't flat-out bad or anything, but it'd be next to impossible to capture the charisma of the original performance). Simon and Viral sounded exactly like they should have from start to finish, and Michelle Ruff turned in a solid performance as Rukia. Jamieson Price did his usual stellar turn as Lordgenome, and you've already mentioned Blum's utterly brilliant Leeron. Even JYB, who can be somewhat shaky at times, nailed Rossiu's cold aloofness. And even though Nia's actress changed halfway through the series, I thought both women had her mannerisms down pat. While one or two of the smaller side characters may have been a bit shaky, the main cast was solid to a man. |

Actually that's not true. ADV had several episodes entirely dubbed before loosing the license to Bandai. Bandai chose to redub the series, rather than pay ADV to finish it. To placate fans, they choose to release a sub only version to get it out quickly, then follow up with the dub version later. It created some interesting return problems at work, as people though they were buying the version they saw on Sci Fi. We had some very angry dub fans

Maybe it's just me, or on the DVD versions of the dub (which parts were re-done, since the Sci-Fi broadcast was such a rush job) but Kamina sounded a LOT better than he did in the TV version.
Anyways pick up the dub if you can, cause it is really good! |
